OMG. The poster for Valley Girls, The CW’s Gossip Girl spin-off following an ’80s-era Lily Van Der Woodsen (Brittany Snow), has leaked online. And though the police line-up pic helps muster mild excitement for the show, I will beg to differ with Mr. Perez Hilton, who claims Lily’s look is "a little stereotypical 1980s." Oh yeah? So where are the bangles? Where’s the lace? The Aqua Net-enhanced ‘do? I have a hard time believing that a fashionable bad girl in Los Angeles wouldn’t be rocking the Madonna look 20-some years ago.
Were you, like me, hoping for full-on ’80s camp for the spin-off?

Haven’t seen “Gossip Girl,” but I love that poster.
You’re right, an 80s NYC girl would most definitely be rocking some Madonna accessories. This show, however, is set in 80s Los Angeles. I wasn’t there during that decade, but I bet it looked different than New York.
I don’t think the look Lily’s rocking is stereotypical’80s enough. Her hair is not nearly tall enough, I see no necklaces or beads, bangles, lace, and the puffy sleeves are barely puffy. I hope the wardrobe department does better on-screen.

Were you alive during the 80′s? Did you constantly walk around in full-Madonna wardrobe? This isn’t supposed to be a CARICATURE of the 80′s, it’s ABOUT the 80′s.
Go watch The Virgin Suicides for a perfect example of this. It’s set during the 70′s, and doesn’t feature a single self-deprecating fashion stereotype.
And as mentioned, it’s set in LA, not NY. Do you even know what you are writing about?

I gotta say, I’m not really into this poster. The copy is totally cheesy (clearly not written by Josh Schwartz!!!) and the outfit seems like something an 18 year old in 2009 would think people in the ’80s would wear… and doesn’t Snow sorta look like Stephanie Pratt in this shot?

Ummm. about the fashion of this show. my sisters wore stuff like this. they were more new wave and they talked like valley girls. this is how some girls dressed. that would be like saying goths didn’t always walk around in goth garb all the time. so just to state… there were girls in L.A. in the 80s that dressed kinda like this.
