Russell Crowe in 'Robin Hood': 'Gladiator' with a bow

Categories: Movies

RobinhoodxThe world got a first glimpse at Russell Crowe as the legend of Nottingham in director Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood retelling, and I have to say I’m worried about his hair. Don’t get me wrong — Crowe looks great. But ever since I first heard about this project, I’ve been concerned by how similar it sounded, in theme at least, to Gladiator. Do Crowe and Scott really want to tackle a film that has such obvious echoes to their Oscar-winning triumph? Now that I’ve seen the photo, I’ve got a follow-up question: Do they really want Crowe’s Robin Hood to have the exact same hairdo as Maximus? In an interview with USA Today, producer Brian Grazer seemed more concerned about the tights problem, saying, "He doesn’t have the old Robin Hood tights. He’s got armor. He’s very medieval. He looks, if anything, more like he did in Gladiator than anything we’re used to seeing with Robin Hood." The problem is, we’ve already seen Robin Hood without the tights. (Remember Kevin Costner? Anyone?) And we’ve already seen Crowe playing a noble, freedom-fighting hero who harasses despots and defends the innocent…while sporting a close-cropped beard and Caesar haircut. Am I overreacting? Are you worried too? Or just psyched to see Crowe back in fighting form?

I’m just psyched to see him back in fighting form. Plus, with the charming, goofy Scott Grimes at his side as Will Scarlett, maybe the film won’t be as heavy-handed as Gladiator was.

considering that Gladiator is one of my all-time favorite movies, I’d rather it be more like gladiator than “Prince of Theives”

Do we need another retelling of Robin Hood? Probably not. Have we seen this before and does Crowe look like Maximus? Yes. Will I buy a ticket opening weekend to see a Ridley Scott movie with Russell Crowe as Robin Hood? Yes.

I’d think that last remark about “fighting form” was in reference to the Michael Cieply article in the NY Times … anyway, I’m still getting over the BBC’s Robin Hood series and its OMG SHOCKER SHOCKER. Not sure I’m ready to shift to this one.

I’m not worried, cause he looks amazing!!

I am excited. I’m just glad to see him in shape, I was getting worried (I don’t know why, he’s an amazing actor). Can’t wait to see the film.

So what if it’s kinda like Gladiator? Really I mean it. All movies are derivative of something else anyway, this just happens to contains elements from a movie he did in 2000. He’s a swell enough actor that I’m sure the two characters will be miles apart. Besides Costner’s movie is 15 years old and not exactly a classic.

Having just watched two movies with Fat Russell, I am happy, SO HAPPY, that he is back to being Delicious Dirrty Russell.

    Yes you are overreacting.
What seems to be the better fit for Russell, another form of Gladiator or another form of Robin Hood?
I’ll take the Gladiator form any day.

Ridley Scott is a brilliant director. So no, I’m not worried about this.

Oh, he was HOT in Gladiator. Even though he’s remained in great actor mode since then, it will be nice to see him be hot again.

Russell Crowe…..is the most effective actor today. Short hair, long hair, tights or leggings….he is the MAN.

  • Kelly

I think it will be brilliant!

I just..*sigh* I can’t see him as Robin Hood. I don’t know why – maybe he really is too much ‘Maximus-imprinted’ to fit this part, though I don’t really have issues seeing him in other films. I just don’t get the Robin-feel. But maybe that’s just me.
