“accurately critical”? Such as with “what are you like to go shopping with”??
re: sara:
Yes. Like “You brought the special sauce” and “Yo yo dawg.”
Why fix what isn’t broken? AI was the #1 show in America for many years. For as inept as the judges could be, we’d all gotten used to them over time. We would either laugh at thim, laugh with them, or ignore them, but we had accepted them. Adding a fourth judge just seemed pointless, and it’s ruining the once well-oiled machine of AI.
I can’t believe more people aren’t calling for RANDY JACKSON to be fired. He has never — not once — had a purpose or given a coherent critique. Sometimes Kara/Paula or loopy and/or ditzy, but once in a while they come through with something cogent. Randy never has and never will (his “not understanding” of Kris’ song from Once being the latest proof).
Dawg, dawg, yo yo, dawg whaddup, yea yea dawg YOURE FIRED
They need at least two judges who can hear when someone’s flat (or “pitchy”). Simon never seems to.
Definitely give Kara the heave-ho. Randy and Paula may not make sense most of the time, but they are an integral part of the success of Idol over 7 years. Kara often doesn’t make sense either, and just loves to hear the sound of her own voice. Buh-bye.
Kara and Randy both need to go. Keep Simon and Paula and bring in a guest third judge/mentor each week.
Go back to the basics, AI. That’s what made you the #1 show to begin win! Go back to just 3 judges. Go back to just a 1/2 hour results show. Go back to just judging the contestants’ performances without predicting the frontrunners so early in the season. And finally–stop all this manipulation and pimping on AI. The way this season is right now–I have no interest to watch future seasons of AI.
Kath:
Your observation is spot on! People (I’m looking at you, Idolatry) complain about the judge’s not giving certain contestants a break and yet they do the same for Kara.
I didn’t know of Kara until she became a judge, but I became a fan because she is consistently the most accurate and articulate judge.
The poll needs to be changed to “who is your least favorite judge?” I’ve seen other polls such as that one and Randy and Paula always get far more votes than Kara.
They should just get rid of all of the judges and start over with three new ones. It’ll give it a new perspective.
to Kath – don’t get me wrong, Randy is as useless as a stump, but there hasn’t been much of anything remotely “accurately critical” out of Kara’s mouth either.
Judging by what I read below (and the way I feel, too) your question was wrong. You shouldn’t have asked if the four judges idea was working. You should have asked “Which judge needs to go?”
Kara seems to be the only one of the three who really listens to the performance, even if she only gets it right (in other words – agrees with me) about half the time.
If anyone goes, it should be Randy. Season in and season out he proves that he is the most irrelevant judge on AI. He just further solidified that fact Tuesday night when he panned the best performance of the night (Kris). I’m not a Kara fan, but at least she can recognize a good performance, and every once in a while she has something relevant to say.
Since Simon will probably be leaving after this season this whole article is a moot point.
I think Randy should go. He offers very little by way of useful criticism and his vocabulary is limited. “For me, for you, for me, dawg, I just wasn’t feeling it.” I don’t think the show’s success is attributable to Randy. He also pimps certain contestants way past their “sell by dates.”
I’m not hugely enamored of Kara, however I think she’s been given a bit of a raw deal. Change isn’t easy in most situations and the AI judging panel is no exception. The show needs to trim the fat (Randy, the useless bantering between Ryan and ‘Inset Judge’s name here,” the boring packages, etc.). There are also way to many commercials – give us a break. I vote for giving Kara another season to find her place among the judges. She should definitely retire the “package artist” bit. It has a negative connotation.
