I agree that the nature of the hype is annoying – it seems she is being treated as a sort of a curiousity because ZOMG she’s ancient – 47 years old! – and all. That part is depressing and stupid. But you are wrong about her talent not being that big a deal. Her voice is truly incredible – to sing that song, that purely, and seemingly effortlessly – she really does have unusual talent.
Was this blog entry really necessary? I guess the answer is yes if your intent was to get more hits to the site. Although the thought of contributing to your entry’s ‘popularity’ makes me a bit ill, I’m irritated enough that I feel that a response is merited. I’m as cynical as they come, but I too have been caught up in the Susan Boyle excitement. Times are tough, people are struggling – and an unknown, likeable woman has generated enoromous positive buzz around the world. Let people enjoy the moment.
The author of this article does not, AT ALL, understand the reason behind the inspiration behind this womans new found success.
She bucks EVERYTHING we deem as a canned view of what someone in that industry should look like etc….she inspires possibility (yes through one song and gesture) for all – and that no matter the age, you can always strive for your goal and dream.
KUDOS to Susan!
Why shouldn’t a “feel good” story be a big deal? In today’s world there aren’t many bright spots…and along comes Susan. Most of us hope she goes all the way to the top.
Yes, you are being a bit of a grump.
I have my concerns about where this all may (or may not) lead as well, but she had a fantastic moment and seems so deserving. The huge change in attitude of the crowd and judges certainly played a large part.
Give her the credit she deserves; you don’t have to take it away from anyone else in order to give it to her, but she did earn every kudo she is receiving.
It’s fascinating to observe the emotional defense mechanisms of people who won’t allow themselves to be touched by a story of another human being’s personal triumph. Oh no, we must get away from that as quickly as possible. Instead, we must shift the focus onto whether her gorgeous voice is technically the most flawless on earth, or whether she needs a makeover, or whether… Oh please God, do ANYTHING but make me feel!
I loved her rendition of the song. It was sung beautifully. It’s an inspiring story and I can’t wait to hear more from her. If anyone deserves the limelight it’s Susan. I hope she continues to stun the world.
Here come the haters to rain on Ms. Boyles parade. What’s the matter, Adam? Your dream never came true, so now you have dump on everyone else? Can’t we all just enjoy this new media darling for a while and NOT have all the backlash? Or is that too much to ask?
Adam, you may not be the first to have written this, but you’re the first I’ve read. But, thank you. I was wondering when someone would agree with me. Condescending is right. People are getting a little too carried away here. I think this is more about us than it is about her. It makes people happy to cheer for her–not because what it does for Susan Boyle, but because what it does for us. It’s like charity–except without much giving. Consider her the reverse William Hung, she’ll get signed to a record deal and by the time it comes out, no one will care.
But no one has commented about the fact that the song itself was so self-descriptive. Do you think she mentally made that connection – or is it just a favorite toon she likes to sing?
Give her the respect she deserves. To stand up in front of a cruelly superficial world to proclaim it’s injustice in front of a “dream-killing” panelist like Simon — KUDOS!

Looks aside, she’s got one of the best voices I’ve ever heard.
I’ve heard Patti LuPone rendition, and Susan’s was alot better.
Cynic!!!

Hahahaha look at this iconoclastic nerd. Oooh, look at me, I’m so friggin’ hip and cool look how I disdain things.

Why so cynical, Adam? Here’s a hug. Now go watch Susan again. If you still don’t get it, maybe a nice cup of cocoa?
