'American Idol': What did you think of 'Unrelenting Pablum' Night

Categories: American Idol

Earlier today, we all gathered for a PopWatch post called "What should the Idols sing for ‘Songs of the Cinema’ night?" Many of you came up with exciting, inventive suggestions for season 8’s top 7 contestants, but (naturally) we got a pair of treacly Bryan Adams ballads, the love theme from that crapsterpiece Armageddon, and a Diana Ross number…set to a harp! When I can’t quite understand the judges’ praise for Allison Iraheta, and find myself bordering on a defense of Lil Rounds (I said bordering), you know the night was very strange indeed. At least Kris Allen sung what he brung. But ultimately, it was one of those Idol nights that’s going to take me a couple of hours (and some unhealthy treats) to figure out how I really feel. Good thing my sister Kathy provided me with a marshmallow Peep resting in a homemade chocolate-coconut nest (with a couple of Cadbury mini eggs thrown in for good measure). When you’ve finished shnacking, post your thoughts in the comments section below, then do come back in the ay-em for my full TV Watch recap!

SO happy that Kris sang “Falling Slowly”, he was great :)
Adam totally stole the show for me though, as always. He just blows it out of the water, EVERY time.

  • Emma

    -Anoop and Kris were great.
-Adam was…well, I don’t really know what that was.
-Allison landed herself back in the bottom 3. Dammit.
-Matt and Danny were boring and bad.
    -Lil was…Lil.

  • Kacey

I am dialing my fingers off for Kris right now. I hope people vote even if they don’t know the song. He took a chance and it was great. Adam was awesome, as always, and I’m hoping Lil goes home.

  • Kath

    - Allison had one of her weakest performances of the season, but somehow it got her praise, and I’m still voting.
    - Anoop was really good, actually.
    - Adam was terrible and needs to stop picking cheesy Hollywood action-film rock songs.
    - I don’t remember anything about Matt.
    - Put the Go in Gokey.
    - “Falling Slowly” doesn’t work with a backup singer, and Kris needed to do the falsetto.
    - Lil was terrible and had a bad attitude to boot.
    - Kara disagreed with a judge and provided pretty much spot-on critiques. Paula babbled on about special sauce, mangled proverbs (it’s fortune FAVORS the brave), and delivered up a whole lot of nothing as a ‘critique’ of Lil.

MY DVR DIDN’T RECORD AMERICAN IDOL TONIGHT!!!! I’m so upset! I just got home from work, and was looking forward to watching tonight’s episode, but it’s nowhere to be found! Did anyone else have an issue or was it just my DVR that failed me?

  • Charlee

Kris was ahmayzing. love that song. so pretty. GAH!

  • RMB

Adam was awesome; Kris started out weak but got into it and did great — picked a great song. Ugh. I feared one or two bad ballads, but too many for my taste!

  • Amy

I totally agree! I love Allison, too, but thought she was a bit off (and maybe a bit boring) tonight. It’s like Simon went back and watched previous shows and decided maybe he’d been too harsh or (more likely) the producers are trying to avoid an all-male top 4 or 5.

  • Franky

I think Allison would have been better if the song had been in a higher key.

I’m just going to watch that clip of Susan Boyle from Britain’s Got Talent and pretend tonight DID NOT HAPPEN!!! I knew tonight was movie night, but when did that become cheesy power ballad night?!? I like Allison, but not that song. I liked Anoop, but not that song. Adam, you know I love him, but frakkin’ Steppenwolff? Matt with Bryan Adams song # 2 I don’t like. DAnny Off-Key was once again off key. Kris, thank you for finding someting original. My 99cents goes to your itunes account this week. And Lil… I have had the privilege of listening to Bette Midler sing that in person. I’m just going to pretend I didn’t hear what Lil did to that song. Botto three… Lil, Lil and Lil (plus Matt and Danny).

  • emily

i can’t wait to hear what kristen baldwin has to say about simon’s comments for gokey and allison.
we need to put a muzzle on kara. who made these judges groups? bad idea to put randy and kara together….bad bad idea.

  • Kath

Franky – thanks for reminding me! I had thought that too, that her song was in a REALLY low key. The thing is, though, Allison has a low voice. And that song sucks anyway. So bottom line, it was just the wrong choice.
I wanted my rock-ballad, Throwing Muses-y arrangement of “The Hill.”

  • julie

anoop and kris the 2 best tonight.
adam–the worst of night. i don’t understand why people love this guy. he just screams everytime he sings–(well with the exception of mad world interpretation of gary jules…which was the only good performance he’s done)
allison can sing, but not liking her tonight.
matt had ups and downs, but i enjoyed it.
    danny-boring.
lil- she will be eliminated tomorrow

  • Carly

It was no where near Allison’s best performance, she sounded off key for a lot of it and was preparing for a bashing from the judges. Maybe it sounded better in the studio?
Anoop did good, but because he was close to the beginning he may be going home.
Adam back to screeching and dramatics. I seem to only be a fan of his ballads. He has a pretty falsetto when he decides to use it.
Matt, I think he’s going home tomorrow. Wasn’t a fan at all tonight.
Danny, please go away. Nice of you to say “Hey remember I have a dead wife” without literally coming out and saying it.
Kris… by far the best of the night, may have been my favorite AI performance of all time.
Lil, I wish she were going home but I think her talking back actually may have helped her. She didn’t do terrible tonight, but she still wasn’t great.

  • Kath

emily – WHY? What the hell did she say that was objectionable?
If it’s time you’re worrying about, Ryan and Simon’s dumb homophobic banter wastes MUCH more of it.
