Brian Austin Green Lantern? I've heard far worse ideas

Brianaustingreen_lWanna hear something astonishing, something that — as recently as a year ago — would’ve never come out of my fingertips? Here it is: I can actually type "Brian Austin Green would actually be awesome as Green Lantern" without a spontaneous soul hemorrhage. He was so surprisingly legit as time-traveling rebel Derek Reese on Terminator: The Sarah Connnor Chronicles that hearing his name associated with a barely nascent Green Lantern film is intriguing.

Here’s the problem: He’s the only one doing the associating. Green is pulling a Sean Young — actively and publicly campaigning for a role that’s nowhere close to being his. Sometimes it works — Jackie Earle Haley landed the Rorschach part in Watchmen by shooting his own audition tape — and sometimes you’re Young, who embarrassed herself and derailed her career in pursuit of Catwoman.

But listening to Green has me believing a little. In a recent interview, he said "From what I’ve heard…they’re planning on skewing younger with the character. I’ve heard somewhere in the mid-20s, which, being a Green Lantern fan, I don’t necessarily agree with. I’ve always kind of felt that Hal Jordan needs to be a man. He needs to be somebody who lives a little and experienced a lot."

That sort of sentiment gives me hope. At least one dude seems to know what he’s talking about. What about you? Of the opinion that Green would make a good Ringbearer? Or do the memories of 90210 give you the shimmies?

I think BAG has totally matured as an actor and I’ve loved his stint on TSCC. Why not give the guy a shot?

Based solely on 90210 (which I used to watch him on), I also would NEVER have thought he’s turn out so well later on…but seeing him a few times on the Sarah Connor Chronicles made me believe he can reinvent his career. Not only was he believable as a sometime-badass…but when did he get so hot?? (Must be hanging out with all those beautiful women he’s been engaged to, lol…)

who the heck is he……… hmm…

Thinking back to him on 90210 (gimme, gimme, gimme a mic check!) you would never think he could do it.
But watching him on T:SCC I think he would be great.
Actually since his first few episodes I cold imagine him playing Nightwing (the adult version of Robin), so Green Lantern is not too far off.

I don’t know much about the Green Lantern, but I thought BAG did an awesome job on TSCC. He has grown so much since 90210. He’s hot, and he can be a badass. After what happened in the season finale of TSCC, And I’m not holding my breat on a TSCC renewal. Somebody needs to give this man a job!!

WHAT’s with all the bagging on Brian Austin Green? Is it just because he was on Beverly Hills, 90210, or is it because he’s dating Megan Fox and, according to some, slowing her down (from what, I wonder – being hot without having proved her acting range/potential?).
Green has grown into a very hot man (which Hollywood must appreciate) who can do both funny (he was called the best thing out of “Freddie”!) and action/drama (as seen on “Terminator”).
I don’t get all the hatin’.

Brian isn’t wrong in his assessment of Green Lantern. I’ve always imagined the character as older, more authoritative. It’s part of the reason Brandon Routh as Superman wasn’t convincing to me. But at the same time, from an actor that tried to make it in a career as a white rapper, I don’t see Green bringing any authority to the role.

To be honest, he wouldn’t have been my anywhere on my radar for the part (I’d still like to see them go a bit older — just like they did with Robert Downey in Iron Man). I’m still thinking Nathan Fillion or perhaps David Boreanz. HOWEVER, I hadn’t seen a picture of Green in years, until now. OK, he looks like an adult now. It sounds to me like he’s got the right idea, and attitude, for Hal Jordan and he at least claims to be a fan of the character. Maybe this would work… He seems like a far better choice than any of the other rumored names I’ve heard up to now. he looks the part far more than Ryan Gosling or baby-faced Chris Pine.

  • paige

wasnt he wanting to be the Riddler???

Whoever they eventually pick, he has to bring gravity to the role. Christian Bale’s Batman should be the model. In a nutshell, this isn’t a role for a kid or a 20-something. For this GL to be believable and do its legend justice, they need an ACTOR…not a pretty boy. But then again, this being Hollywood, most things it can screw up it does screw up, so I am not all that confident.

I thought Seth Rogen already had the part? Isn’t that why he lost all that weight?

    thats the green hornet

Hal Jordan was always portrayed as a brash, no-fear, seat-of-the-pants jet jockey both before and after he was given the power ring by Abin Sur. In my mind, the only person in Hollywood who currently seems to embody those traits is “Supernatural” star Jensen Ackles. He’d make a perfect GL. Green has been a revelation on the “Sarah Connor Chronicles,” but he seems a bit darker of a character actor than is required for Green Lantern.

I actually love that casting. Even more so than Chris Pine. He has a good look for the part, was damn good in Terminator, and would come fairly cheap.
Only problem is fanboys would never get over his 90210 roots no matter how good he did. It’s too big of a role for them to accept.
I for one would be pumped (actually looking forward to this more than any of the upcoming sequel fest hero movies or the new ones being introduced). But that’s probably not enough. Just dont’ cast him too young. Green is right. Hal needs to somewhat world wise. 30 or so.
