'Twilight': Does the Michael Sheen 'New Moon' casting win you over (or back)?

Michaelsheen_l

New Moon director Chris Weitz’s "aggressive" pursuit of actor Michael Sheen — best known for playing Tony Blair and David Frost in the Oscar-nominated films The Queen and Frost/Nixon, and the Lycan (or werewolf) Lucian in the Underword films — is a serious hit with fans. Casting him as Aro, leader of the Volturi, a coven of ancient vampires who police (and kill) those who threaten to reveal the secret of the immortals’ existence, shows that Weitz knows what interesting characters he’s got to work with. And also, of course, that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke got seriously screwed on her budget.

But you’ve also got to wonder if Weitz sought Sheen out because he’d lend the production a credibility that even the casting of Dakota Fanning as Volturi member Jane hadn’t managed. Comments on our weekend news brief about Sheen’s casting make you think he might’ve succeeded:

Sara: Holy crap!  Now I will definitely go see this movie!  I love Michael Sheen!

beelkay: Fantastic! Now that I can get behind. I just hope all these goodactors they’re getting lift the original cast’s game rather thanovershadow them.

Jessi: I wasn’t sure if I’d bother to see New Moon in theatres, but Idefinitely will now! Michael Sheen is exactly the kind of actor Summitneeds to cast to atone for the mediocrity of the first film.

and my personal favorite…

stella: Twilight is a piece of trash, but Michael Sheen is the s—.

Are any of you haters non-believers contemplating giving the series a try now that Sheen is on board? Anyone who swore off the films after the first one planning a return?

I think he’s great but I still won’t see the movie. I think it’s a smart move, though. It will probably bring in people who wouldn’t see it otherwise.

While I adore Michael Sheen, maybe they could give the original cast acting lessons instead of just piling on better actors. And also get a new screenwriter while they’re at it. Please no more dialogue about “spider monkeys”.

What is the Budget for New Moon? Clearly it’s larger than Twilight.
I also wonder how many actors are trying to get “in” in small yet pivitol roles?

michael sheene is a wonderful actor, and I am confident that his acting skills will elevate the level of this movie considerably. having said that, one can’t help wondering why the director is deviating from the novel so much. Aro, Caius and Marcus are supposed to be in their early twenties (implied by the comparison to Carlisle, who is 23) and sensationally beautiful- Angelic looking monsters if you will. sheen is a great actor but angelically beautiful he is not!

The casting of both Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning is definitely lending credibility towards the Franchise. It makes one wonder how much better the first Twilight might have been if we had Chris Weitz from the beginning. I can’t wait to see the final product come November!

I too love Michael Sheen (and to Annabellelee, I personally think he’s adorable) but I agree that the dialogue is what needs the most work. The chemistry between the leads is good, it’s just the garbage coming out of their mouths.

It is obvious that with the budget increase will be better New Moon, and not only for new members of the cast is going to improve, everyone has talent in the first movie could not prove it completely, the film was faithful to the book what I like But the editing was not very good, all the actors committed to their characters and that is something that we appreciate those who follow the process from its start filming

How are they going to film this so fast? I’m thrilled the sequel is so soon (HP is driving me nuts) but if they’re still casting…

  • Milo

Twilight is bollocks, and I love Michael Sheen so this hurts me because now there’s gonna be a movie out there with him I’ll never see. Then again if I want vamps and lycans I’ll just rewatched Underworld.

Emma, I disagree. I think the dialogue was some of the most crucial parts in the movie itself.
I also disagree with the people that are saying the rest of the actors suck. That is so untrue, the entire cast is very talented in my opinion. Espacially Robert Pattinson, his performance in Little Ashes was phenominal.
And, yes, I think Summit punked out on the budget for the first movie, but let’s just be thankful that for the second movie, Chris Weitz didn’t hire any of the Disney ‘actors’. The last thing we would need would be random dance routines and jazz hands.

i think the addition of michael sheen, and also dakota fanning, is great! they’re both diverse actors who could definitely help the original cast step up their game. hardwicke/summits vision for ‘TWILIGHT’ was geared too much to the teen audience. hopefully chris weitz and future directors for the series will realize there are older readers who are also fans of the books that don’t want to see fluff.

  • Susa

The entire cast is phenomenally talented. Kristen Stewart was outstanding in Speak, and the Cake Eaters. Rob has been amazing in How to Be, Little Ashes, and the Haunted Airman. Also, Kristen and Rob are PERFECT as Edward and Bella. I blame Catherine for my issues with Twilight. Thank GOD we have a great new director. And, Michael Sheen is a great choice as well.
New Moon will be AMAZING :)
