'Date Night': Could the comedy's cast get any better?!

Kristenwiig_lIf you’re like me, then you were already sold on Date Night, the romantic comedy set to star Steve Carell and Tina Fey. The very idea that those two comedic titans will star in the same movie is enough to make a man soil himself, in a good way (if there is indeed a good way to wet yourself). Apparently, a number of stars in Hollywood feel exactly the same way: Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Taraji P. Henson, Common, and Saturday Night Live MVP Kristen Wiig have all signed on for supporting roles.

Director Shawn Levy (Night at Museum) told Variety he wanted to cast every supporting part with a big-name actor, and it’s safe to say he succeeded. Even better, he’s not only cast A-list actors, but also people especially adept at comedy, even though they may be best known for their dramatic work. Wahlberg, in my take-it-for-what-it’s-worth-opinion, has never been better than his hilarious turn in I Heart Huckabees. Franco, too, stole the show as the dimwitted stoner in Pineapple Express, and Henson has been a bundle of joy in everything from Hustle & Flow to The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The best news of all? Perennial scene-stealer Wiig (pictured) will play Fey’s BFF. She’s consistently hilarious in, well, everything (Adventureland and this SNL skit most recently). What do you think of the cast, PopWatchers? Of course, a great cast doesn’t always equal a great movie, but do the recent additions make you want to see this one even more?

Oh hell yes!!!! I am about to soil myself just thinking of how funny this movie is gonna be!!

Hey Jeremy–I too love the Date night concept, but I have to tell you, stop promoting the demon Gilly sketch. Its not funny, not comedic, and definitely makes the wonderful Will Forte and Kristen Wiig annoying. If those characters died in SNL hell, I would live happily forever. Like a boss.

    EPIC

Not a big fan of SNL but Kristen Wiig was great in the Simon and Garfunkel episode of FOTC! This movie sounds fantastic :~)

  • Shane

Done. Im sold at Tina Fey, and the rest of the lineup basically makes me seize with excitement. :D

  • AnthonyCW

Whoa! In addition to Fey and Carell we get Taraji P. Henson and James Franco?!? When is this coming out?

  • TL

I’m already tired of Wiig. Overrated and overexposed. There. I said it.

  • Richard

It’s also supposed to have Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl, who is hilarious on there as the bitchy Blair. Cannot wait!

  • Aman

I’m excited to Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl in it!!

  • LJ

I don’t get the hype over Kristen Wiig. She can be funny, but just as easily she can be grating (see: Gilly skits). Which just about sums up every SNL cast member. Stop trying to make Wiig happen!

  • Roota

Jeremy, I LOVE LOVE Kristin Wiig, but that Gilly character is AWFUL. please stop promoting it as I almost feel like it gives her a bad name. (I’d rather a Penelope sketch, thank you.)
But yeah, this movie looks like its going to rock.

  • krikky

Oh Jeremy, you are so innocent. There MANY, MANY good ways to wet yourself, duckling ;)
That said, yes, this movie sounds fantastic.

  • Raven_Moon

Fey and Carell’s involvement has me automatically excited to see this movie. That being said, the supporting cast just puts me over the top. I can’t wait!

  • Michelle

Best comedy lineup is in This Side of the Truth, but this is a VERY VERY close second!

  • joe

What? No mention of Leighton Meester? Just how unhip is EW becoming?
Meester’s a potential scene stealer. I’m tempted to bookmark this article and show it to people when this movie comes out as a perfect example of lack of
    prescience.

  • C

UGH. Why did they have to put Wiig in there?! I’m so sick of her and her lame characters on SNL. Excitement for this movie slightly decreased.

  • DorothyZbornak

I CANNOT WAIT. I can’t wait to see Tina Fey, Steve Carell, James Franco and Kristin Wiig in the same movie!

  • TysonCrispyNuggets

All you Wiig haters need your diapers changed.

  • Robert

Kristin Wiig is an MVP??? Did she slip you some cash to write that? You’ve got to be kidding. The only reason anyone even knows who she is is because all the other women left at the same time.
She’s not funny. Every character she does is a variation of Gilly.

  • layla

Fantastic. You’ve been able to mention every small supporting role but not Leighton Meester. Maybe because she is ”just” a teen drama star?
You seem not to be so snob when it comes to shoot three (three) Gossip Girl covers in September. With my compliments.

  • Bernardo

Is it me, or Mark W. is the most working actor at the moment? It is movie after movie… and I dont really like him

  • Sara

I have to join the Wiig haters. ALL of her characters are the the same and NONE are actually funny. I love the rest of the cast, but just having Wiig as the bff makes me think twice about seeing the movie.

  • Lil

    Carell, yey, Fey, Blah

  • Al Fredo

Ha. I was about to criticize the lame Gilly sketch, but a dozen people beat me to it. The movie looks promising though.

  • alexandra

oh thank god, i thought i was the only one who could see that wiig is Just.Not.Funny. she has her moments, but most of the time i think she is super annoying and i don’t get why EW is slobbering all over her like some hormone-crazed schoolboy. stoked for franco though – he is a great comedic actor.

  • Sarah

I love Kristen Wiig, but that Gilly sketch is AWFUL. It’s just not funny and is painful to watch. Please make it stop.

  • Holly

I’m also tired of Kristen Wiig. She has way too many annoying characters on SNL.
Otherwise, this sounds like an interesting cast.

  • isabel

    i love the gilly sketch.
