Michael J. Fox was on The Daily Show last night to pimp his new book, talk about his fight against Parkinson’s Disease, and call out Rush Limbaugh for his campaign against stem cell research that might be able to help people suffering from his condition. (Though no mention of his upcoming stint on Rescue Me.)
Other TDS nerds, are you thinkin’ what I’m thinking? Yes! MJF was the very first guest of the Jon Stewart era. Behold that fateful meeting, after the jump:

1. Miss U, Beth Littleford. 2. I remembered there being a rocky transition from Kilborn to Stewart, but I must have been on the crackpipe — Stewart doesn’t seem awkward at all, strange-fitting suit or no.

Wow, dealing with crazy politics every day has really aged ol’ Jon! LOL I guess it’s been a while, though.
…you have to live in the United States to watch this, blah, blah, blah…”
This entire episode can be found in places on the internet that aren’t crap called “Hulu.”
Fascinating. Limbaugh’s “campaign against stem cell research”?! You clearly have no idea what you are writing about. No such campaign ever existed as far as Rush was concerned just like no journalism exists where your childish tabloid is concerned.
Interesting. Fox was just on Oprah where Dr. Oz very publicly said embryonic stem cell research was basically dead because embryonic stem cells don’t work as well as adult ones or core blood cells (from umbilical cords). But it seems the author of this article is way behind the times. Not surprising since Obama made such a big deal over opening up embryonic stem cell research despite claims by the mainstream medical community that they no longer feel it’s a viable treatment.
Newsflash for the has-been.
Rush doesn’t preach against stem cell research. I don’t think he has even mentioned it. Also, it has always been legal to do fetal stem cell research.
Hollyweird is full of idiots.
What are you people talking about? Yes, embryonic stem cell research has always been legal, it’s just that Bush blocked federal funding of it for 8 years, essentially hampering the progress of this important research but limiting its funding sources. Keep drinking the Right Wind Retroade–stem cells are not all alike and embryonic stems are still some of the most viable. You can’t influence/change science just because of your religious/moral beliefs–science is FACT.
GoddessLu, since science is fact, let me give you a few facts. Despite years of research (possible through private and foreign funding)embryonic stem cell therapies have never succeeded in curing a single disease. Adult stem cell therapies, on the other hand, have proven effective on literally dozen of diseases.
Oh my god…Jon Stewart’s old HAIR!
There is a group of physicians, patients and other interested people working together to get treatment with adult stem cells legalized in the U.S. as it should be. Please ask your family and friends to sign up (“JOIN”), and get as many doctors to sign up as well. Please see The American Stem Cell Therapy Association site

Fox is an idiot!!!!!! I do not care what happens to him. He is a pod to me.
He is just taking up valuable space and producing carbon that is destroying the world. He should abort himself!!!!!
Here is Michael J Fox and Oprah getting owned by a Scientist explaining that Parkinson’s Disease will NOT be cured by Embroyonic Stem Cell Research…..Watch their reaction
GoddessLu: Actually, you have no clue what you are talking about concerning the actual science. Yes, Bush banned taxpayer funding for the Embryonic Stem Cell research, but the other reason it never found funding is because no private medical research company would go near it, because it has never yielded any positive results. Ever. They have plenty of capital to invest in cures, and they spent it on other Stem Cell lines. Which actually gave results. Lots. So please, stop your foolish condescending finger wagging while citing “science”. Because you are beclowning yourself.
GoddessLu: Also, you said: “You can’t influence/change science just because of your religious/moral beliefs–science is FACT.” This is so precious. Have you ever heard of something called “ethics”? Maybe you should look it up. Until then, maybe you could do us all a favor and refrain from voting. Thanks. The man who discovered embryonic stem cells, James Thomson, said: “if human embryonic stem cell research does not make you at least a little bit uncomfortable, you have not thought about it enough.”
The Daily Show was MUCH better with Kilborn, when it was just a fun, silly comedy show. Jon Stewart turned it into a moron pep rally. The most funny thing about the show these days is the sheer number of morons that try to cite it as something important.
Most of you are really missing the whole point here…. please go anywhere else if you want to continue the conservative/ liberal bickering caucus race. NEWS FLASH: Nothing you say is changing anyone’s minds! People are going to think what they want to think. That’s not what I want to read when I’m on EW.com.
Yea Ted – where is Craig Kilborn today? It was SOOOOOOO much better!
All Rush’s statements from 2006 were that it looked like he hadn’t taken his medication so he was much more shaky than other appearances he had made recently. I offer Rush’s Exhibit #1, what do you think, 2 and half years later compared to now, what do you think?:

Sorry, I repeated myself, I repeated myself, I repeated myself, but the observation still stands.

Bush didn’t block stem cell research funding, except for NEW stem cell lines.
Rush Limbaugh has no “campaign against stem cell research.” What Rush Limbaugh was against, in this whole flap over Michael J. Fox was him being USED by the pro-ESC people to give people FALSE HOPE about ESC research.
I have had Parkinson’s for 13 years, the last 5 of which I have spent following 3 phoney claims for adult stem cells. Adult stem cell research has been around for 40 years and has produced 9 cures, not 70-80+ claimed by the Family Research Council.
Just a further clarification. Bush didn’t ban funding for embryonic stem cell research. He limited it to lines created before a certain date. He also authorized funding for research into alternatives. This research has made huge advances in the form of such alternatives as induced pluripotent stem cells – the very research which has made embryonic cell research obsolete. The liberal rant is always empty of the facts
By the way, President Obama has also revoked Bush’s executive order authorizing funds for research into alternatives. So who is the ideologue who is anti-science???
Yes, Ted. I agree with you. I miss Craig Kilborne and this show when it was fun not antagonistic nor so clearly agenda-driven and partisan for one candidate. So bloody obvious.
Btw, Anitamargarita, just because Craig isn’t in front of you on your boob tube, doesn’t mean he isn’t enjoying his life. He’s doing what he wants to be doing. And what are you doing with your time? Spending precious moment of your life, never to be retrieved again, arguing with people in comment sections on this site and no doubt others. Yeah, that’s a life to be envied, all right.
On that note, I’ve talked the talk and now I’ll walk the walk take my advice and log out. So, flame away to your heart’s content. Eat those minutes, hours, days, months up.
Chomp, chomp, chomp.
There is NO BAN on anything anyone wants to do with stem cells IF THEY USE THERE OWN MONEY – This whole issue IS MADE UP – what people are arguing about is can you STEAL money from decent people who are opposed to this for moral reasons and fund research that the MEDICAL Industry is NOT EVEN INTERESTED in doing themselves! That’s right they think there are much more promising options then stem cells. The REAL people behind this are trying to get some moral coverage for abortion now that sonograms are becoming common and the horror that that is can no longer be glossed over.

Laura Asks #2 – Why would someone like Michael J Fox not seek treatment outside the U.S.?
http://repairstemcell.wordpress.com/2009/04/07/laura-asks-2-why-would-someone-like-michael-j-fox-not-seek-treatment-outside-the-us/
for all in opposition to hesc research maybe you don’t know all finding break throughs including ipcells where discovered using hesc so beond that bush would inhibit reseach by having researches audit thier funding to prevent comingling federal money with viable hesc research bush will go down in history as the worst an dumbist pres ever
If Stem cell research was thought to be a viable healthcare option , we would have private lines, and the government would not need to fund new lines.
Dr Mehmet Oz, Oprah’s medical expert, said that fetal stem cells would not work because the cells come from embryos. At this stage, these cells can become any cell in the body. They could even become cancer. It’s very hard to control them.”
Michael J Fox is always so medicated up with mind altering drugs he does not know what world he is in. Forgive him
Obama Assassinates Hope of Stem Cell Treatment in US (Exec Order 13505)by revoking research of non-embryonic stem cells & the prioritization of research with the greatest potential for clinical benefit.

You CAN’T get stem cells in the US today even if they are from your own body. The FDA says you can only get drugs derived from stem cells. This typically takes 7-12 years & a ½ billion dollars, so…
