So… Shall we tell the Senator to raise the taxes on Porn instead of cigarettes… protect the people of Maryland from this horrible addiction… I wonder what the taxes are on cigarettes in HIS state!

thanks Harris, for making us the laughingstock of the country. and Mote should be ashamed of himself, spineless , sniveling yes man – so much for academic freedom. he should of called the bluff of those grandstanding buffoons. i’m sure they really would have denied all state funding for the state’s flagship university. vote them all out of office, corrupt monkeys (sorry for insulting monkeys)

I’m surprised some helicopter parent didn’t raise a hissy fit in the first place. Frankly, I’m amazed and relieved that the showing was even a possibility. Beyond that, the state should be ashamed of itself for bullying the school with funding (or lack thereof).

    Try again…WaPo’s story says:
All the activities at the student union are funded by fees that students pay, not the state. The university did not pay for the movie and would have covered its costs with ticket sales.

They showed Pirates II this year at Carnegie Mellon too. Nerds love their porn! And it was funded by the student activities fee and they provided counter-programming for those who were against the showing of porn. Everyone was happy!

The state should not have put its nose in this.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Is porn even a big deal anymore? I thought the ubiquity of sexual imagery on the Internet had changed that. Anyway, most college students were over 18 and free to purchase such films for viewing on campus. So, the difference between public and private viewing is unclear to me, except that the latter more often requires tissues or other absorbent materials.

It’s always the stupidest ideas that show how important the First Amendment is. And this was sooooo stupid to begin with. If we can’t defend idiots, there is nothing we can defend.

Well…since our constitution was written for a moral society, Im not surprised that our constitution is always being redefined and manipulated. If you want to be “educated” about sex, then go for it!! but why do you all need to gather and watch porn? Furthermore, I highly doubt that being educated on sex is the primary reason for viewing it anyway.

I have 2 words for the state leaders of Maryland who want to ban porn from being shown in colleges.

Andrew Harris has a porn addiction and, since he can’t control himself, he wants to control others. This is the motivation of all puritanical lawmakers. I know people exactly like this. I bet if you checked their computers, half of these politicians have child porn on them.
