Showtime passes on 'L Word' spinoff (whew!) and Matthew Perry series (sniff!)

Showtime has decided to pass on two anticipated series: End of Steve, starring Matthew Perry as a local afternoon talk show host, and The Farm, Ilene Chaiken’s L Word spin-off that would follow Alice (Leisha Hailey) into a state prison. I’m miffed about End of Steve because to me, "dark comedy" + "Matthew Perry" = "delight." But I’m not too hung up on the no-go for The Farm — Alice’s relationship with Tasha sort of beat the "Alice in prison" idea to death already. (It eventually got better! But still.) And I’d rather wait for a brilliant new series about lesbians than another one from the same showrunners responsible for making The L Word so laughably bad a lot of the time. Press play below for part 1 of Autostraddle.com‘s hilarious compilation of some of the biggest WTF? moments from The L Word. At this point, I seriously crack up at even a glimpse of Max.

Are you upset that we won’t get to see Alice in (ball and) chains or Matthew Perry looking 29 types of befuddled? Maybe Showtime should have combined these pilots into an actual talk show hosted by Leisha Hailey and Matthew Perry. Agggghhh make this happen!

To find a great story about women in love currently airing on TV, you need to look no further than Guiding Light and the brilliant story of Olivia and Natalia!!!
This touching story has been building for a year and next week we are anticipating a possible hook up for the gals!
The bad news is GL was just cancelled, as I am sure you know. The timing couldn’t be worse as we finally have a story of this quality building up to creating a new super couple of daytime! And a couple shown in such positive light which is rare in this type of relationship!!
Please help us get the word out on trying to save Guiding Light. We are hoping SoapNet or another cable outlet will pick it up!
Here are some links to let people know how they can help!

Can’t say i’m upset about “The Farm” not being picked up. I was looking forward to watching it until the non-ending “The L Word” producers left us with as a series finale. The finale left me feeling like it wasn’t so much as a finale as it was an attempt to get the audience hyped for the new show. They gypped the fans and took us for granted, so in a way, not being picked up serves them right. Besides, Alice’s character grated on my last nerve, and i doubt that i could’ve sat through shows centered around her. I was rooting for Tasha to leave her. All in all, “L Word” was still one of my favorite shows and i will miss it. The Max storyline was one i liked, even though it turned out to be ugly. Max was courageous and honest, and Daniela Sea played the hell out of him. I Why the negative feelings about that character ? A theme of the show was ‘sexuality is fluid’, yet fluidity seemed to be met with contempt by lesbian viewers. Helloo..diversity ? Treat others as u want to be treated.

That video was hilarious, and yes, The L Word was oftentimes terrible. Especially that p*ss-poor excuse of a series finale. Whatevs. So no, I’m not sorry The Farm didn’t get picked up; was hoping for that, actually. I am bummed about Matthew Perry’s series though. Hopefully he will find a series and a network worthy of his diverse talents. And my fingers are crossed for a decent series about lesbians, but I don’t think Illene Chaiken is the one to bring it.

We’re left to mourn the ‘End of Steve’ before it even began… Ain’t that freaking ironic?

Oh, that’s so sad about End of Steve. Even though everyone hated Studio 60, I loved it, almost purely for Matthew Perry’s dark, sarcastic character. I definitely agree with your “dark comedy + Matthew Perry = delight” equation and hope he gets another project on air soon…I could use a weekly dose of him in my life!

  • Moxie

That makes me sad. I was looking forward to seeing Leisha in another series!

If I was a straight person and I saw “The L Word,” I’d probably have voted against Prop. 8, too.

  • Raven_Moon

I love Matthew Perry. That’s so disappointing about “End of Steve.” Can another network pick it up?

  • riese

zomg, that video is the funniest thing i’ve seen since season one, when The L Word was still funny.
Oh yeah! Um, I love Matthew Perry. I’d go straight for him, and that talk show sounds amazing. They could call it “The Sight.”

woo hoo! the l word was a horrid show and the writer needs to hang herself

  • battlefield

Who is Matthew Perry’s and what is the farm. And will it be a spin off the l words.

  • A. Fabulous

Can we put Matthew’s show on FX? I’m missing great, dark comedy ever since The Riches ended, and I’m missing Matthew Perry every day!

  • Tee

I thought the L Word had a decent start, good and bad moments but overall not bad, but it seemed to just go downhill from there. Good to just let it RIP.

  • Liz

Um I have no idea what the HELL you’re talking about. The L Word was a GREAT show and every single one of it’s fans was upset that it got cancelled.
A spinoff would have made a lot of TLW fans very happy.
Maybe if you actually WATCHED the show you would know good TV when you saw it.

As a lesbian who initially loved the L Word, by the end I found myself watching purely out of obligation. I’m glad its over, I just wish there was another show featuring women to women love….Oh wait here is – Check out the Otalia story on Guiding Light (otaliafan on youtube and cbs.com). How crazy is it this daytime story is written better than Showtimes
