So Jon & Kate Plus 8 is returning for a fifth season. Um….yay? At today’s TLC upfront, the parents were on hand to offer generic platitudes about the upcoming season. Jon said to "expect the unexpected," and Kate added that "[the family will] be taking a very exciting trip in the near future. Not to give it away, but it’ll take us back to our roots." Oh man, I hate "trip" episodes.
I’m not sure that I want another season with the Gosselins, and not just because they often seem, oh, completely miserable.* Also because what I used to like about the show has diminished in recent seasons: I liked the documentary vibe back in the day, when the show felt like it was capturing an unusual family doing ordinary things. Now, so much of the show is about the show itself — there’s a meta element here that’s just not my style.
What about you, PopWatchers? Are you all still into 8? Or have you had enough?

In addition to watching the Gosselins morph from everyday middle Americans into camera-happy reality actors, the other element that captivates is waiting for Jon to grow a set and slap his mean, mean lady. The way she orders him around, talks over him, and insults him – you’d think her real job was as a drill sergeant. It’s a shame that the kids are being raised with an ever-present camera crew around to show off to. Has anyone thought about what they will be like once all eyes aren’t on them?
I love jon & kste.. The cute little ones are adorable and very smart. I think they are well organized and well mannered although Kate needs help with the housework so she can enjoy the cute little ones There is more to life than stressing her very nice hudband…
I enjoyed the show when it was young, but Kate needs to lighten up a bit. I can’t tell if she loves Jon or just needs him around for finances. I wish he would hand it back to her once in a while. Is this their only source of income now? What will happen when the cameras are turned off? I hate to say it, but those two older kids are real brats.
I couldn’t agree more. I personally have had enough of the nag. She’s really starting to be unattractive b/c of her bullying and the fact that he just takes it and allows his children to be exposed to it….is enough to have it yanked. Should be called
Jon and Kate + 8= dysfunction.
I would have to agree! do we really need a 5th season of her abusing Jon? I missed some episodes because quite frankly I got tired of watching her yell at him and act like shes queen bee and cant lift a finger to do it herself, so i dont know why hes no longer working in IT. They are now living in a 1.5 (or something) million dollar home. Said that its getting paid for by books…i can guarantee you they are coming back for a 5th season because of the money that the show generates for them.
I think that Jon takes waaaay to much of Kate’s negative talk. He needs to stand up for himself and she would back down. I understand that having a family of 10 is difficult and things need to be “in order” to survive. But the way she bosses him around shouldn’t be accepted. And the show is truly more “what free stuff Jon and Kate get this week” than a documentary about their family. Hawaii, Utah, New York, etc. It’s all given to them, along with the promotions they do (that VTech thing, Allstate Insurance last episode…) Come on, stop pitching up stuff and live your life.
I’m really hooked on the show. I’m not sure John wants to return to another season, though. If the little ones don’t mind, then I don’t. I think they are a wonderful, functioning family. Great parents!
I enjoy watching John & Kate I think Kate is a great mom how can anyone say she needs to lighten up. I can’t imagin raising 8 kids and keep up with a show. I think for the most of us we have only raised 1 child at a time and you hold your breath as they grow and learn the right paths that we as parents taught them. so John & Kate keep up the great work I think you are great together and love your children. Looking forward to the next season.
I have said from the beginning that this is a pretty poor idea. Don’t think for a minute that this show didn’t influence Nadya Suleman to have all those children. The health risks of having that many babies is insane and no one should even go there. They got very lucky and I hate for people to think that it is a good idea.
show has changed so much. Ordinary life before was something I could relate to, now I don’t watch it anymore. Also hard to watch Maddy- she has no manners, and whines all the time.
I agree with a lot of it, i can’t stand watching Kate treat Jon the way she does. And Maddy is the next Kate in training. Also while we struggle to buy the things we need & pay our bills with vacation’s out of the question with just two kids, they are handed thing after thing and trip after trip. I don’t blame the people who offer it, cheap advertising but what makes Kate think her kids deserve it so much more than everyone else. Oh our kids deserve this, really? Is that for listening to you chop off your husband on a daily basis? The rest of us have two working parents trying to make ends meet, not just letting camera’s in the door. Good luck Jon, even most of the wives that watch your show feel horrible for you. He can say what he wants to make Kate happy, but hes going to lose it at one point. It’s time to find out why they don’t have anything to do with the majority of their family.
I sure hope these two money-grubbers are socking away some cash for group therapy. This is one family that’s going to need it.
I laugh when I read all the comments about Kate “abusing” Jon… I have an idea, let’s put a camera in your home all the time and see if your relationsip is picture postcard perfect? I’m guessing it probably isn’t, but you probably wouldn’t like it if everyone was looking at your life with a microscope and talking about your shortcomings. I think sometimes things aren’t always perfect between them, but when is it ever between anyone? Worry about your children and your life first and just enjoy the show for what it is, a TV SHOW!!
Neither Jon nor Kate even work now – they just live in their new McMansion off of the money they make from commercializing their kids. Enough is enough! I bet Jon and Kate are swaeting it big time with the Octomom around – she’s got more kids and is eating up all of the publicity!
I really liked this show from the beginning and I think their onscreen chemistry is why millions of viewers watched in the first place so if its not broke why fix it? At least Kate is there for her kids 24/7 unlike so many other families who rely on nannies and day care centers. Even though she can be hard on Jon its quite evident that she loves him. I will be watching and I’ll bet so will America. My best wishes to this lovely family.
