Even though the season 2 finale of Damages was 90 minutes long, I wasn’t sure how they’d resolve everything. But they did, and at a breakneck pace. Let’s quickly dissect all the switcheroos, flip-flops, and general what-the-hells that went down in the finale:
Wes refused to kill Ellen, and the unknown guy we had seen him kill in the car a few weeks ago turned out to have been the evil Detective Messer. Score one for comeuppances! But demerits for never explaining just what Messer had on Wes in the first place to force him into going undercover to befriend Ellen. (Or did I miss that? There were so many damn dark secrets to keep track of. I was juggling so many that I barely had brain space left over to remind myself how to get dressed in the morning.)
Ellen did not in fact shoot Patty in her hotel room. Instead, she shot the FBI camera behind them, buying her time to force Patty’s confession for trying to have her killed last season. Although it did take Agent Warner an inordinately long time to ditch his surveillance van and run to Ellen’s room afer hearing the shots. Could he not get a parking space closer to the hotel?
Patty, spurred on by the ghost of Ray Fiske, decided to make everything right by working with Tom and Tom’s sister to turn Ellen’s bust for bribing a judge into a bust of FBI Agent Warner for framing her.
The reason Patty was bloody when she stumbled out of Ellen’s hotel room was not because Ellen hurt her, but because on her way up to the room, Finn Garrity had stabbed her in the elevator when she rejected his offer to testify against Walter Kendrick and expose the energy-trading scheme, and…now wait just a minute!
I can suspend my disbelief with the best of them, but this was a bit much. Okay, so it became clear that the reason Patty looked so sweaty and scared when Ellen was talking about the botched hit on her was because she was in great pain. Fine. But how exactly did she manage to look so smooth for the first part of the meet? She was bleeding like a stuck pig, yet found the composure to coyly talk about bribes. We’ve been told that Patty can remain cool under pressure, but I didn’t think that applied to deep flesh wounds. Who knows, perhaps when she was deposing Frobisher last season, a tiger had just chewed her leg off: She’s just that good! And another thing: If she had on tape the deal made between her and Dave Pell to frame Ellen in exchange for UNR evidence, why did she need to enact that whole elaborate charade of having Ellen make the payoff?
The answer to that, of course, is “for the surprise reveal.” Which is the answer to any question you ask about this series. That’s the fun of it. I’m addicted to Damages and think the writers do a great job keeping balls in the air and then shocking you with where they land. But as hooked as I was on the story, I feel like they tried to keep a few too many balls afloat this season. There were so many characters that Patty sometimes dissolved into the background, and she should be the center of attention. And William Hurt vanished for the entire middle chunk. That I can’t argue with, though. As good an actor as he is, I was glad to see him go. I think he vanished because the writers realized they had flip-flopped him a few too many times for him to make any logical sense anymore. It’s like they’d binged on script tricks and then woke up one morning with a hangover and couldn’t believe what they’d done, and tried to dump their mess outside and forget it ever happened. Although those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it—they brought him back and his return made just as little character sense the second time around. For example, if he had an epiphany that he had to own up to what he’d done and no longer accept the money from the evil polluters, then why did he refuse to incriminate them in his wife’s death?
Oh, and more thing: What was with the brief cameo from Ted Danson? Are they setting it up so that next season Frobisher sells his new environmentally conscious building to Patty’s law firm, and the two of them fight crime together in between his long lunch breaks spent snorting blow in his car with a hooker?
But the trick to enjoying a show like Damages is not to pull at any loose plot strands, because the whole show will unravel. (A rule I’ve just broken.) So I’ll stop my nitpicking and look to next season: Will Ellen, as Patty predicted, “be back”? That would be great! Oh, the tension that would bring, as well as twists galore, and…why would she possibly go back to work with the woman she held at gunpoint for trying to have her killed?
Whoops, there I go again.
What did you think of the finale? Were you satisfied with the way it all wrapped up? Did you see any of the twists coming, and which ones completely shocked you? Would you like to see Ellen rejoin the firm next season, or would you rather she stayed away and left the show to Patty?

It would be nice to find out what happend to Timothy’s character? I am sure Patty will bring that into season 3,who he is, the goods on him etc.. I am sure Rose is contracted for 3rd season so unless she is foe will be another ridic plot with them together. The whole Ted Danson character can go.
It was a very fast paced finale. I agree too many characters that at times I had a hard time keeping up. Perhaps they’ll bring Marcia Gay Harden back but Hurt can go. Definitely see Danson coming back, not sure of how though. That was a little far-fetched with Patty being stabbed and then sitting and talking to Ellen calmly but I guess she did what she had to do. Finn stabbing Patty was a shocker. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with this season but the first season was so fantastic, I guess that happens.
It’s amazing this show is even making it to season 3. This year’s ratings were even worse than last year’s. I think FOX is embarrassed to cancel it because of the critics’ love of it. And please let Close NOT win another Emmy for it. Kyra is long overdue–and her show is a smash.
Ellen’s new “boss” is, I believe, Claire Maddox.
I thought the finale was amazing. I did not expect Patty to save Ellen’s ass being that she is a ruthless woman. Overall I thought it was great and enjoy the series.I am anticapting the next season…however, I would love to see Ellen and Patti go head to head next season as adversaries in a legal proceeding. That would be interesting. I like the idea of Ellen working for Claire Maddox. Marcia Gay Harding is a great actress and was a great asset to the show. Good show. Can not wait to next season!!!
LOVED the show and cannot wait for Season 3. I am continually jolted by the plots’ twists & turns and it took me a few minutes to realize that Patti actually saved Ellen’s butt from being in a sling by the crooked FBI agents. I, too, am curious about Wes – and alos just how DID Frobisher got connected with these crooked cops? Maybe the writers are leaving something for next season. Let’s hope Patti and Ellen DO get to go head-to-head in a courtroom battle next year, along with Marcia Gay Harding, of course. Great job, everyone. I’ll be on pins & needles until Season 3 begins!
I liked last season much better with Frobusher and Fisk. This season, the water was way too muddy. I hope it rebounds next year. All I got this season was confused.
I’m still curious whether Ellen will ever prove that Frobisher had her fiance killed.
I also thought i was wierd that like Daniel, Frobisher disappeared for a large part of it and then just reappeared. I also wanted to see a resolution to Marcia Gay Harden’s Claire character – i.e. she goes to work for Patty or something.
I hope Ellen doesn’t come back. I don’t think the actress is very good and I have a hard time believing whatever her character does. Keep the show focused on Patty
After Season 1, it would have been hard to match. I’m still hooked.
I haven’t done a great job of keeping up with the show this season, and frantically watched about seven episodes over the weekend so I could watch the finale last night. That being said, I thought it was pretty thoroughly confusing…but still a lot of fun! Just when you think the show has run out of twists, they throw another 10 at you.
The Ted Danson cameo did irk me though. I couldn’t figure out why he had that random scene. I didn’t think of the fact that they might be setting up a plotline for next season.
To answer a question from the review (which seemed kinda obvious?): the reason Patty needed Ellen to still actually bribe the judge (the “whole elaborate charade”) is so they could take down the FBI agent and have him flip on Pell. If Patty just had the recording with Pell promising a deal, that wouldn’t be enough – they needed the deal to actually go through (have Ellen arrested) to show interference, corruption, etc. actually happened, instead of just being “promised” by Pell, which the FBI guy could deny he was ever instructed to do anything about. They needed him to actually do it.
Personally, I liked all the characters and plot lines this season. Reminded me more of the Wire than season 1 (a good thing in my mind). Maybe that had something to do with the actors too, though. I thought the ending was completely consistent – didn’t see any holes at all.
I hope Hurt is gone – couldn’t STAND listening to his whiney voice for another season.
Patty HAD to go through with the payoff charade or else FBI agent Warner wouldn’t have turned on Pell. She could tell him that she knew it was a bogus payoff, and that she knew his role. Without the bogus payoff, she can’t get Warner to flip on Pell. Speaking of Pell, I loved both he and Kendrick together again as alums from _The Wire_, the second greatest show on TV. And in another connection, Francie Swift as Frobisher’s ex and Debra Monk as Ellen’s mom as alums from A&E’s Nero Wolfe.
Lucy Lucy Lucy,
Every since the Bunny Stew in “Fatal Attraction”, you don’t get much better actresses than Glenn Close. She’s right up there with Meryl Streep and while I do love Kyra, she isn’t in the same league with Glenn Close. I also like Patty and understand her and I kept screaming at the TV going – “no way is she going to let this young girl get over her – she is WAY to smart for this”. I was surprised when she sent Ellen off with the money – I truly thought she had set her up to get arrested and was SHOCKED by the turn of events. I agree, Ellen will be back. The only thing I didn’t get closure with was her boyfriend. She’s teling her dead fiance that she’s “met” someone and the guy is taking Patty to the hospital but the Dirty Detective had told him there was a “warrant” out for him. Why would he be openly in public and how is he walking around free and what DOES he do for a living?
