Steve Wiebe's E3 attempt at 'Donkey Kong' record will be televised. Discuss.

Kingofkong_l

Steve Wiebe, the underdog we all rooted for in the  2007 documentary The King of Kong: A Fist Full of Quarters, will attempt to win back his title of top-scorer on Donkey Kong from evil gaming legend Billy Mitchell at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on June 2. G4 will cover the event live.

Now, The King of Kong was one of my favorite films of 2007. (If you haven’t seen it, rent it.) I liked it so much, in fact, that I interviewed Wiebe and went to see him play live in Times Square. Not as exciting as it sounds, folks. Watching the movie, I’d been air-boxing and talking back to the screen; watching an unedited game in-person, I was like, Why is he the only one who gets a chair?

So, are you die-hard gamers hoping that G4 airs Wiebe’s attempt in its entirety? Or, are you hoping they check in on him every now and then, then stay with him as the record and/or kill screen approaches?

    Go Steve! Billy is a tool and I bet his hot sauce sucks.

    I also liked The King of Kong. However there are many repetitive hours to go through in order to get to the “kill screen”. Watching for all those hours may not be the best use of G4′s air time (or maybe it is, based on some of their programming). Regardless, I think they should video and edit it, then broadcast the results.

    I hope Billy wipes the floor with him. I loved the King of Kong, but Steve cries to much for me. Man up Steve!!!!

    I LOVED King of Kong. I’d want to watch, but just an edited version.

    Billy is a tremendous tool. Go, Steve!

    PETER B: If you don’t like G4 then don’t watch. No one asked for a snotty comment from you. Their giving Weibe a killer platform during their E3 coverage. No other network would bother. GO STEVE!!!!

    Hi ….,
    I don’t think theres anything we can do.
    I’m not familiar with the circumstances of your history with TG, but judging from my own, I can see how one can easily get screwed over in the name of politics and/or profit.
    I actually have a copy of the game I played 9 years ago that was the “real” one that beat Billy’s long standing record from the 80′s…..NOT Webie. The whole KoK thing is built starting from a purposely manufactured lie.
    I made 2 copies, one I sent to TG, the other I kept for myself….THAT I STILL HAVE.
    Dwayne Richards and a few other notable people have seen this video from 9 years ago and agree theres no disputing it, it was all legit,

    Seth Gordan intentionally lied. I was screwed out of my right full place in KoK.
    I can’t tell you how angry I am that an accomplishment I originaly did was simply taken away from me with intentional lies, handed over to someone else (they purposely lied to do it) so they could all profit! NOW THERE’S A MOTION PICTURE IN THE WORKS?! I got zero!
    I’m the one who first actually beat Billys long standing score, can prove it and they hand it to Webie and B.S. the public with a so-called …”documentary”?
    Trying to explain the truth about the whole KoK thing to the general public is like trying to explain quantum physics to a taylors dummy. No one wants to hear it even though you can back up your argument with truth and videotape.
    The public actually thinks KoK is a real life,real events documentary.
    Both these Film people and TG now have a lot of $$$ tied up in the KoK sham.
    And another game has been wronged too

    Josh from G4 here.
    Just wanted to clarify for you folks that G4 will be cutting into our live E3 coverage to check in on Steve Weibe and his record breaking attempt. The entire attempt will be streamed live on G4tv.com but the entire unedited event will not be broadcast.

    Heres a scoreing threshold Steve MUST maintain to even have a chance at 1,050,200. This is the point threshold for A REAL attempt at a world record:
    Staring each level with this:
    L=5 115,000
    L=6 170,000
    L=7 225,000
    L=8 280,000
    L=9 335,000
    L=10 390,000
    L=11 445,000
    L=12 500,000
    L=13 555,000
    L=14 610,000
    L=15 665,000
    L=16 720,000
    L=17 775,000
    L=18 830,000
    L=19 885,000
    L=20 940,000
    L=21 995,000
    L=22 1,050,000 +400 to 700 pts on final level.
    This is the REAL path to the record. If Steve does not maintain this scoreing pace, he has absolutely 0% chance of beating the record ,no matter how many kill screens he gets.

    The subject material, i.e. King of Kong ,these people are now profiting from, they stole from someone else to begin with.
    Steve should at least “earn” his money now by actually making legitimate attempts. Scores of 585,800 at L=13-3 and 608,800 at L=14-3 are vastly more serious record attempts than say 995,000 at L=22…with a kill screen.

    Go Billy! Steve is a wuss, but mostly because I’m evil.
