'American Idol': Sorry, Paula! This is no two-way race!

Categories: American Idol

I cannot say tonight’s Grand Ole Opry-themed edition of American Idol gave us the kind of magical, "whoa mama I just saw a star up thar!" performance that we’d seen multiple times (think "Daydream" or "Hello" or "Imagine" or "Love Is a Battlefield" or "Crazy on You") by this point in season 7. But that’s not to say I’m not excited by the take-home message of tonight’s two-hour telecast.

The judges have been (not so subtly) driving home the idea that season 8 was a two-way, or at best a three- or four-way race. But while Lil Rounds, Adam Lambert, and Danny Gokey all performed well enough that they shouldn’t have any problem making the Idol tour, four or five key rivals tonight served notice that they are (as Randy Jackson likes to say) "in it to win it, Dawgs!" And, as an Idoloonie who gets a little sour and cranky when by mid-March, you pretty much know which contestants will be the last two standing, I’ve got to give a seal-clapping, not-entirely-steady standing O to said singers. Place your bets, ladies and gents, we’ve got ourselves a horse race!

On that note, I am off to write my full TV Watch recap, which will post here on EW.com early tomorrow morning. In the meantime, don’t forget to sign up for EW.com’s Idol Prediction Challenge. Even if you got crushed in last week’s standings, or forgot to sign up, you still have a shot to sit atop the Week Two leaderboard, where you can point and jeer at your fellow players, including yours truly, plus season 6 supahstar Melinda Doolittle, and my Idolatry cohorts Kristen Baldwin, Missy Schwartz, Annie Barrett, and Jessica Shaw. So before you post on the message boards, go forth and prognosticate. Yay!

Tonight's 'Dancing with the Stars': Discuss!

Dwts_judgescarrie_lUPDATE: Today’s TV Watch is up!

What up, DANCMSTRs? Someone’s going home, but I don’t want to be the worst person on the Internet ever and type out who that is. You know who it is. Share your thoughts about tonight’s elimination episode in the comments below.

***BIG NEWS!*** Carrie Ann Inaba — the ”Weepy” component of Dancing with the Stars‘ esteemed judging triumvirate of Weepy, Cranky, and Dopey (pictured) — will be blogging for EW.com! Her first post will be up on PopWatch tomorrow. (UPDATE: Here it is.) Carrie Ann, who also runs the unofficial Illegal Lift Brigade of the L.A.P.D., joins Jeff Probst, Phil Keoghan, and Chris Harrison on EW’s roster of reality TV guest bloggers. Carrie Ann’s probably the most controversial judge on the panel, but she’s also the most honest and constructive. Not to mention, her flailing arm gestures consistently exhibit more "beautiful lines" than Bruno’s. I’m so psyched to have Carrie Ann here that I’ve started practicing her signature "Woooooooooo!" at my desk. (I don’t want to know what she’d say about my lines.)

The castoff’s name is after the jump. Did the right person go home tonight? Type!

'American Idol': Chat with your fellow readers during 'Grand Ole Opry' Night!

Categories: American Idol

It’s 7:59 p.m. EDT, and that means we’re all seconds away from finding out who’s getting the dreaded lead-off position and who’s getting the coveted pimp slot on tonight’s top 11 performance episode of American Idol (which features that awkwardly phrased theme of "songs popularized by members of the Grand Ole Opry.") As Kristen Baldwin and I noted in this week’s preview episode of Idolatry, the country-music theme could spell trouble for Anoop Desai and Scott MacIntyre, but then again, last season’s trip to the Dolly Patron songbook drew some great performances from singers who hadn’t really exhibited a country edge (namely, Jason Castro, Michael Johns, and Carly Smithson). Anyhow, we decided to try a little something new this week and give you a blog post where you can share your thoughts on the telecast as it unfolds. I’ll be back at 10 p.m. to share my first impressions, and then I’ll be working till the wee small hours on my full TV Watch recap. In the interim, go do your witty, wacky, Idoloonie best in the comments section below!

Josh Schwartz's 'Rockville CA': Snap judgment

Rockvillecaweb_lI’m a bit conflicted on TheWB.com’s Rockville CA, the new web-only series from Josh Schwartz, the man behind the curtain of The O.C., Gossip Girl, and Chuck, and Alexandra Patsavas, the woman behind said shows’ killer indie-minded soundtracks. It’s got an interesting concept: short five- or six-minute episodes featuring a cast of vaguely-familiar looking castoffs from Privileged and Veronica Mars (to name just two) who hang out in a fictional L.A. concert venue, showcasing performances from real-life buzzworthy bands. The fact that the show is Internet-only adds to its appeal, for me at least (speaking as someone who’s gone long periods of time without cable and is more likely to visit Hulu than to tune in the night of).

The only problem is that the show’s characters aren’t very compelling — although it’s probably still premature to fully judge. The first four webisodes debuted today, which roughly equates to all of 22 minutes. Still, the main characters kind of make me want to die inside. There’s Hunter (played by Andrew J. West) fulfilling the Seth Cohen archetype. You know, the sort-of nerdy, music-loving, fast-talking motormouth whose obnoxiousness is charming rather than off-putting. And then there’s Deb (Alexandra Chando), the beautiful girl made quirky by vintage T-shirts and a pair of thick-framed glasses. Deb and Hunter meet, flirt, bicker and then flirt some more, all while philosophizing over life, the opposite sex, and music.

'American Idol': What should the Top 11 sing for Grand Ole Opry Night?

Categories: American Idol

Americanidoltop11_lTrue confessions time: My knowledge of country music is limited, and my knowledge of the "music popularized by members of the Grand Ole Opry" stretches the outer definitions of the word "knowledge." But is that gonna stop me from suggesting songs for tonight for the top 11 contestants of American Idol‘s eighth season? Can I get a "Hell naw"?

For the record, those cantankerous pranksters over at Vote For The Worst claim they’ve got an early list of songs that the current batch of Idol hopefuls were allowed to choose from (click here to see it); interestingly enough, an Idol spokesperson declined to comment on its accuracy. (Hmmm!) From that list, I am truly hoping we hear none of the following tonight: Dolly Patron’s "I Will Always Love You" (yes, Lil, I’m talkin’ to you!); Martina McBride’s "A Broken Wing" (overdone-on-Idol alert); Trace Adkins’ "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk"; Garth Brooks’ "Friends in Low Places"; Johnny Cash’s "I Walk the Line" (done too well by Daughtry back in season 5, thanks); and Trisha Yearwood’s "How Do I Live." And note to the four remaining female contestants: I know you might be tempted to cover Carrie Underwood’s "Jesus Take the Wheel," "Before He Cheats," or "Last Name," but do you really think it’s wise to put your vocal up against that of a megapopular former Idol champ in her chart-topping prime?Nyet!

One other point of interest: While VFTW includes several Johnny Cash tunes among the list of eligible songs, the Grand Ole Opry Web site doesn’t actually list him as a member. (Who knew?) You can click here to check their full roster of artists, then head down to the comments section to suggest songs for your favorite (and least favorite) contestants. And feel free to skip my picks. No, seriously!

Adam Lambert: Johnny Cash’s "Folsom Prison Blues"
Alexis Grace: Trisha Yearwood’s "This Is Me You’re Talking To"
Allison Iraheta: Hank Williams’ "I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry"(those who’ve heard Cowboy Junkies’ version are nodding their heads)
Anoop Desai: Reba McEntire’s "You Lie"
Danny Gokey: Josh Turner’s "Firecracker"

Zac Efron gets dirty in a new magazine photo shoot

Zacefron1_lZac Efron has become the latest teen idol to fire a shot across the I’m-a-grownup-star-now bough. In a new Interview magazine photo spread, the High School Musical star rolls around in the mud, looking — what’s the technical term? — disturbingly hot. And while he’s taken the somewhat novel step of adding a hot and naked (but tasteful, because it’s in black and white!) female model as a prop, he’s engaging in an age-old rite of passage for squeaky clean kid stars hoping to transition to more mainstream fame: There is no better way to announce your post-adolescence to the world than sexing up a photo shoot. (What would the alternative be? Shots of the now-of-age star…having a beer? voting? renting a car?)

Britney Spears hit Rolling Stone in her undies to go from Mouseketeer to Vessel of Our Infinite Attention; Jessica Biel famously broke ties with 7th Heaven courtesy of Gear magazine; Justin Timberlake announced the beginning of his world domination with a post-’N Sync RS cover still burned into our memory to this day. (Efron himself went semi-kinda risque for RS by lifting his shirt halfway for the cover last year.) And lest we forget, just last year, Miley Cyrus tested the public-outrage waters by flashing a swatch of bare back to Vanity Fair readers.

The difference: Efron’s sexy shoot here is perfectly timed — just as he’s about to hit multiplexes in his first true leading-man role, the age-reversal comedy 17 Again with Matthew Perry, and his first serious film, Richard Linklater’s Me and Orson Welles. He’s done with Disney — the next installment of the High School Musical franchise will feature a fresh cast. And, well, he’s 21 — so we don’t feel quite so dirty admitting he now has our attention.

What do you think? Is Efron’s photo shoot too steamy? Or just right?

George Clooney video: His Andy Rooney is amazing

Categories: Viral Video!!!

Attention, world: George Clooney needs a video blog right now. Oh, he’s a sexy dreamboat millionaire playboy Oscar-winning all-around awesome dude, sure. And that would be enough reason for us to hang on his every move. But the man can combine a humanitarian mission to the border of Chad and Sudan with a hilarious impression. Win.

Given how many of us follow Ashton Kutcher’s tweets ("how much chest hair is too much?"), I think it’s a safe bet ClooneyVision would be a hit. Behold:

I thought no Clooney-sighting could make me as happy as his appearance on ER last week, but this totally beats it.

'The Haunting in Connecticut': Let's rename it!

Hauntingconnecticut_l"Why do bad things happen to good people?" asks Oscar nominee Virginia Madsen’s character in the not exactly scary trailer for The Haunting in Connecticut. But a better question might be: Why don’t I get any chills from the Connecticut preview? Could it be that the film’s title sounds a little too much like 2005′s abysmal An American Haunting? (Answer: affirmative!) What do you say we give this flick a new title? Vote in our poll below, then suggest other potential names in the comments section below!

Kanye West to cameo on 'Family Guy' spin-off: Now will you watch?

Familyguykanyewest_lAs a huge Family Guy fan, I was surprised to hear last year that Seth MacFarlane chose to develop a spin-off starring Cleveland, the Griffin family’s slow-talking neighbor. Now, I love to see the guy pop in and out of scenes to deliver his deadpan punchlines — and he certainly boasts plenty of baggage for episode fodder, what with his love problems — but I felt like Cleveland’s measured method of talking would prove tiresome, especially since MacFarlane has found so much success with his patented rapid-fire writing and editing.

Of course, that was all before I found out today that Kanye West and Taraji P. Henson would be lending their voices to an episode of The Cleveland Show set to air in 2010. Any show that casts Henson in any capacity has promise in my opinion (memo to Hollywood: give the girl some more work!). Plus, I’ll tune into any program that features the oh-so-rare sight of Kanye West poking fun at himself (in this case, he’ll be voicing a rapper named Kenny West). And though I don’t find West to be as fun or obscure a cameo as, say, Quahog’s other West — that’s mayor Adam West for the uninitiated — the prospect of him coming back for more than one episode certainly makes Cleveland stronger (heh) in my eyes. What do you think, PopWatchers? Will you watch Cleveland now? Is this why Seth MacFarlane placed No. 1 on our list of the 25 smartest people in TV?
