Disney made a slew of 3-D announcements today at their ShoWest presentation in Las Vegas. The biggest news is that both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 will be released as a 3-D double feature on Oct. 2, and that the special presentation will play for two weeks only. Previously, Disney had planned to release the movies separately. Disney also revealed that Tim Burton’s 3-D reimagining of Alice in Wonderland will be shown in IMAX 3-D in addition to regular 3-D, and that the 1991 classic Beauty and the Beast will be rereleased — yes, in 3-D — on Feb. 12, 2010.
Disney’s decision to release the Toy Story movies as a double feature surprises me. There’s no word yet on what theaters will be charging for admission, but the last double-feature experiment — Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse — was a box office disappointment. I’m sure the Toy Story double feature will have no trouble surpassing Grindhouse, but still, wouldn’t it have been more advantageous financially for Disney to release the movies separately?
As for Beauty and the Beast, I’m extremely curious to see how that traditionally animated movie will be transformed into three dimensions. Yet, part of me secretly wishes Disney would leave the film alone. Isn’t going back and adding a third dimension to Beauty and the Beast somewhat analogous to colorizing a black-and-white classic? But, if this weekend’s $59.3 million haul for DreamWorks’ Monsters vs. Aliens means anything, it’s that audiences are more than willing to shell out a few extra bucks for a 3-D "enhanced" movie.
What’s your take, PopWatchers? Are you all gung-ho about all the 3-D movies in the pipeline, or do you not see what the big deal is? And will you be purchasing tickets to hang with Woody and Buzz in 3-D?

Bobby cowrote “Let Me Sign” as sung by his friend Rob Pattinson on the Twilight soundtrack.
Not really a fan of the 3D idea. These films were not created as 3D films. On the other hand, I liked the giant IMAX re-releases of the films like they did a few years ago with Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King. I saw Beauty and the Beast for the first time when I was 7 and I’d love to re-live the experience of seeing it in a theater … just not in 3D.
I’m all for Toy Story in 3D…I loved Beauty & the Beast, so I’ll be interested to see it with an extra dimension as well. I’ve really been enjoying the new 3D…Coraline was especially well done.
pixar + 3D + IMAX =
We recently went to Disney World, and at Mickey’s Philharmagic 3-D show in Fantasyland, Magic Kingdom, a clip of Beauty and the Beast is in 3-D. It’s the “Be Our Guest” song where the dishes and silverware are dancing. It’s pretty neat, so I can only imagine the whole movie in 3-D. My kids will love it, I’m sure!
All I know is that Disney needs to rerelease Beauty and the Beast on DVD. They released it 7 or 8 years ago, and I know for a fact many people weren’t able to purchase it. I want the original version, 3d is okay I guess.
I’m excited to see the Toy Story films again, this time in 3-D. Leading up to the third movie…in 3-D. I recently saw an interview with the producer of Beauty and the Beast and he stated the software they originally used to create the film is like half way to 3-D anyway, so it’s been very easy to transform the movie into 3-D. I cannot wait to see the already stunning images of that classic film jump out from the screen. Let’s revisit Who Framed Roger Rabbit next.
Do Aladdin too! That’s the kind of movie for which a 3-D rerelease makes sense.
I totally dig 3D – just saw ‘Coraline’ in real3D and it was absolutely phenomenal. I never felt more involved in a film in my life. So yeah, I’ll shell out a few extra bucks to see ‘Toy Story’ again in the theatres. But I’m really intrigued to see what they’ll do with ‘Beauty and the Beast’ to bring classic animation into the 3D world.
I’d just rather have Toy Story 3…
I’m thrilled for “Beauty and the Beast” being re-released in 3D. It’s such a classic movie and someone got to see the first scene in 3D animation and they said it was brilliant.
I”m not sure I”ll go for the Toy 1&2 double feature, “Beauty and the Beast” in 3D sounds like a good re-issue.
And I will definitely be seeing “Up” and “Toy Story 3″ in 3D.
I loved “The Nightmare Before Christmas” in 3D. It totaly worked as an enhancement of the film.
I almost wish WB would reissue “Superman the Movie” in 3D instead of trying to make a new one. Then maybe do the Donner cut of Superman 2. I think both films would work well enhanced by 3D.
It’s not for every film ever made – but I really like how involved I feel when watching 3D.
does anyone know if “toy story 3″ will be in 3D too? last time i checked it’s comin out june 8th or sumthin. but they didn’t say anything about it bein 3D
Toy Story 3d is indeed a great deal. Check out http://www.toystory3-3d.blogspot.com for more information. I can’;t wait for the 3d movie to be released!
TOy Story 3d would be a blast off! I can’t wait for the movie to be released!
