'The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency': It's great...minus the whole 'Murder, She Wrote' vibe

HBO debuted its new series The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency tonight and, for me, it was sort of a mixed bag. Read the full post.

I LOVE this show…I am not sure what’s with the person that wrote this article, but I thought the show was refreshing and hilarious. And as far as Anika (Ms. 97%) as me and my boyfriend like to say, I loved her and Jill Scott (my favorite artist). If HBO does not offer a second season, they will truely be losing out on faithful viewers.
So…I will keep searching the Itnernent in hopes of soon hearing that there will be a Season 2 of this show!!!!

I live in England and loved both the first installment and the 6 part series, like many others I am waiting to hear when the 2nd series will start? they have to continue it where they left off, I cannot believe they can just let the series die at the point where it ended.

Best show on TV–I could not wait for Sunday night–I tape it and watch over through the week–please tell me they are going to re-new the show. My husband has done mission work in africa and we have a special love for it. Keep up the good work–some of the junk that’s on TV is not worth watching. Please come back and more shows next time–

The pace of the show is PERFECT! It doesn’t need to become the cliche of western television and drama with fast-paced action and one-liners that turn what should be drama ino absolute comedy and comedy into pathetic scenes (paging David Caruso’s Horatio Cane?). Real drama isn’t in break-neck speed cutaways and dizzily racing around; it’s in the interaction between people and watching that evolve, sometimes slowly and very deliberately. That’s what makes No. 1 Ladies so special and so wonderful! And, I’m not sure if we were watching the same show, but Anika Noni Rose shines through very brilliantly as Mma. Makutsi. She’s the sort of character you drink in slowly – perhaps like a nice cup of bush tea! – to fully experience all the flavors. These artists are doing WONDERFULLY with this show!

These books were so delightful and I wasn’t disappointed in the HBO TV series at all. I felt a part of Botswana! The parts are great, I love Anika Noni Rose and feel everyone was cast beautifully.

Is there any question this series will not return for the 2d season!!? If it doesn’t, it shows only nitwit TV stays on and something new, fresh dealing with feel-good material doesn’t stand a chance. Couldn’t wait till the next episode aired each week in the first season. Somebody please keep it going.

REFRESHING! I loved everything including the pace. Anyone one who knows African & Eastern cultures would understand the pace. Jill Scott is a true renaissance woman. She has earned her place at the top & No. 1 Ladies… is icing on the cake. Anika Noni Rose is rising steadily. I love her character. They really compliment each other. The mechanic has my heart. Thankfully, they didn’t cast a traditional Hollywood type in that role. The color and flare from the hair stylist is hilarious.
The illustrations and credits are marvelous. I’ll be looking for every episode and sharing the books with everyone.

I have read all of the #1 ladies detective agency stories. It is fresh and different than anything else on TV. It is a so unique The stories and the cast members are perfect for the show. The environment is new to most of us. TV needs the African touch to the viewers. It is the best HBO show. If you do not include this show on HBO, I will cancel HBO.

Marvelous!! Anyone htat hasn’t read the books andis used ot ‘fast” tv is miising the whole point. The best thing about the whole series is that McCall captured the relaxed contented pace of life in semi-modern Africa. I’m from there so I know. My friends have gone back and despite less bucks prefer life there because it feels like “life’ — not so fast and stressful as America. Enjoy. When are they making the next set? Or even a movie (with more ‘real’ Africans please! There are good actors all over Africa – not just those living in Britain!!)

I soooooooo miss the number 1 ladies dedtective agency. Has it ended for good?

  • Janna

I’ve just watched the first two episodes and I LOVE it! It would be nice if it’s renewed, however as most of the Western world has been socially, emotionally and quite possibly physically Lobotomized the likelihood isn’t strong unfortunately. However I’ll certainly be on the lookout for it!

So refreshing to see a cast of people that isn’t as commonplace and dullas what were used to.

Loved it! I hope the series is continued. Jill Scott’s character is so fresh and innocent. The assistant is very funny.I love the setting in Botswana! Well done to all involved.
