Earth Hour 2009: You had better be reading this in the dark!

Newyorkblackout_lHappy Earth Hour 2009! You know what’s funny? I had no idea there was an Earth Hour 2009. Sorry. Guess I’m not very eco-conscious. Don’t judge me — I do buy recycled paper towels and toilet paper! That has to count for something. But it made me feel a tad better when I checked the official website and discovered that Earth Hour only began in 2007. To summarize, in case you’re Earth Hour ignorant like me, it’s an initiative to get everyone in the world to shut off their lights from 8:30-9:30 p.m. today in a stance against global warming. Here’s hoping you don’t have anything important to do during that chunk of time, like reading or performing surgery. The organizers are hoping that 1 billion people participate this year, which seems astonishing. Apparently, the lights at the Sphinx and the Great Pyramids of Giza will even be switching off for the big event. Which begs the question: "Why do the Sphinx and the Great Pyramids of Giza have lights?"

In any case, I plan to participate. Of course, it helps that I will be out of my apartment during the hour of 8:30-9:30 p.m. tonight. Now that I think about it, I do waste a lot of electricity with my lights. In fact, Thursday night I completely passed out on my couch with both living room lamps on, which makes me sound like a narcoleptic or something.

Are you going to participate in Earth Hour, PopWatchers? Do you think it will make a difference?

Here in Chicago, ComEd is tracking how much energy is being used during those hours. I heard it on the news this morning.

Earth Hour is stupid. It is another liberal symbolic act that people use to puff out their chests and say “look at how great I am.”
So while all of you tree huggers are turning off your lights for an hour I will have all of my lights and all of my TVs on. I will even have a night light on in every outlet available.

    I’m with you Snowdog.

Las Vegas is a flagship city and all of the major hotal casinos on and off the Strip are turning off their marquees and exterior non-essential lights. It is going to be a sight! The iconic “Welcome to Fabulous” Las Vegas sign is also going off. There are viewing parties and events throughout the city. So for those that think that Las Vegas isn’t conscious about global change – think again. The symbolism that this creates will hopefully wake up our elected officials throughout the country to let them know that people do care and want to make a difference.

  • Am I A Bad Person?

It’s 9:22 PM local time (EST) and I have my lights on, I’m recording a TV show on DVR, I’m running the dishwasher, and I’m using my computer to post on the internet. If I hurry I can start a load of laundry! I like to think that I’m not ignoring Earth Hour — I’m celebrating Human Achievement Hour.

    At Snowdog:
U dont understand the purpose of these types of things. they do these to prove that if everyone works together and contributes a lil, they can add up to be a HUGE difference.
Its MORONS like you, that people like me have to pay taxes to support your fat lazy uneducated !@#$.

I spent Earth hour with my 83 year old mother. We built a beautiful fire in her fireplace and had a wonderful quiet hour together talking about her childhood, before her family home had hydro, phones or running water. A wonderful hour that helped our global situation.

LOL at these knuckleheads who are criticizing.
It is currently 8:44 PM Mountain West time and I am basking in the glow of all of my 100 watt lights on. The sound of all of my TVs envelops me like a warm security blanket. I have all of my laptops/PCs on.
I am a college educated professional so good try on the uneducated part. If you think me having my lights on is going to raise your taxes you are the idiot. My lights will not warm up the Earth one bit. My lights will not raise your taxes one bit. Nor will you having your lights off lower your taxes or my taxes one bit.
The Socialist in the Oval Office will be doing the raising of the taxes not me.

Snowdog…people turn off the lights because electricity is created using coal at power plants. By having a large number of people turn the lights off, you cut the amount of coal the electric company uses to power its generators, thereby diminishing the amount of pollution created. Orchestrated with a billion people, that means a lot of coal being saved and pollution prevented.

Doesn’t it take more energy to turn lights off and on, then it does to just leave them on? Kinda like it takes more gas to turn your car engine off and on than it does to just leave it running? Just wondering…
