Good insight, but if it were merely a matter of creating fiscal illusions in the stock market, we’d have a relatively minor problem. It’s far more insidious. We used to rationalize that we were moving away from manufacturing to a “service economy,” but we mostly have a fluff service sector that provides nonessential services to people in nonessential jobs. Daddy is a corporate lawyer. Mommy is in advertising. They eat out, hire nannies, and thereby pump a ton of money into the economy and not a penny of it is actually productive. Then we have the middle-class freeloaders who think they have a Constitutional right to buy a house, have it increase in value, and not lift a finger to do any work for it. And let’s not forget the RIAA and MPAA, who do nothing creative themselves but blather pompously about “intellectual property rights.”
