We don’t know much about Woody Allen’s newly-announced project, except that it’s got a top-notch cast that includes Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts, and Slumdog beauty Freida Pinto. It could be a a dramedy (a la Vicky Cristina Barcelona) or a breezy comedy (a la Scoop), good or not-so-good (again, VCB or Scoop, respectively).
But the addition of Nicole Kidman to the cast got us wondering: What if it’s a comedy? Could the Oscar-winning actress pull it off? She’s played an amazing range of roles, to be sure, but we’re having trouble remembering the last time Mrs. Keith Urban made us chuckle. And her forays into romcom territory — Bewitched (pictured), The Stepford Wives, Cold Mountain (that one was supposed to be funny, right?) — have mostly tanked at the box office.
Still, I’m going to go out on a limb and say she could do it. Yes, I’ve seen her not-so-funny SNL epsiode. And her really not-so-funny talk show appearances. But Kidman’s nothing if not a shape-shifter, and I think the right director could bring out the actress’ funny side — the one that briefly saw the light of day years ago in movies like Flirting and To Die For.
What do you think PopWatchers: Could Kidman hack it as a kidder? Or should we keep our fingers crossed for Woody to let her costars do the joking?

she was kinda funny in “Margot at the Wedding”. she can do sarcasm/ acerbic wit, which Allen usually writes. but we shall see. like you said, her talk show appearances have been kind of awkward.
I thought she had some very funny moments in moulin rouge! Writhing around in the bear skin waiting for Ewan McGregor to get to it… but an entirely different kind of film altogether.
Actually she was pretty funny on David Letterman after her split with Tom Cruise when she remarked that she’d be able to wear high heels now. I chuckled anyway.
I agree about Moulin Rouge–she was really funny while trying to seduce Christian. I crack up when she barks like a dog.
She was pretty funny in Moulin Rouge too
I actually thought Scoop was pretty funny… just saying.
She could probably be funny, it’s just too bad her plastic face distracts me from anything she does.
Her SNL skit with Mike Meyers was hilarious, she was great!
She’s got a great dry sense of humour not all humour has to be over the top to be funny
I know most don’t agree, but I thought Bewitched was a fun movie, and while she wasn’t ROFL she was funny and charming:)
nicole kidman is a natural funny person, and in moulin rouge, to die for, margot at the wedding was excellent. she has a strong sense of humor.

I think she could do it, but she seems to have trouble choosing roles that are a good fit for her. I laughed during Bewitched, but I don’t remember anything about it, so it probably wasn’t that good. Stepford Wives wasn’t very funny. She definitely camped it up in To Die For, and I enjoyed her delivery and commitment to the bit when she did “Spectacular, Spectacular” in Moulin Rouge!…and the seduction scene with Ethan where she growled…and the big opening number.
I think so. Moulin Rouge was so stupid it was funny.
I honestly think that she is very funny and also cute at the same time. She was very funny in Moulin Rouge and lots of people are saying that Bewitched wasn’t funny, well I thought it was hilarious. So she was funny in that too. Also margot at the wedding was funny. She was also funny in Practical Magic cause she was such a dits. Honestly, a lot of her movies show her sence of humour in them even if they are not a comedy. She can ce anything in her movies. So, I think she can pull off easily.
Oh, Nicole Kidman is funny. Anyone who’s seen To Die For should be able to tell you that. She was also funny in Moulin Rouge, and unintentionally hilarious in The Stepford Wives. And, call me crazy, but her attempt at singing “Over the Rainbow” in Australia had me rolling in the aisles. I think the key here is that she’s not good at sustaining comedy over the course of an entire film. Her out-and-out comedies (if you can call them that) were just not funny, though, so it could just be that in the past she’s gotten bad material. Either way, I think if anyone can successfully make her funny throughout an entire film, it’s Woody Allen. For sure.
