Cartoon Network branching into live-action shows

Filed under: Television and tagged:

Well, well, well, it seems someone at Cartoon Network has been reading PopWatch: Bobb’e J. Thompson will have his very own show! Just like we wanted!

Cartoon Network announced yesterday that it’s heading into live-action territory, with six not-cartoon series set to launch in the coming months. Bobb’e Says, according to the station’s press release, will be "a fast-paced, viral video clip show where other people’s painful mistakes become tools for Bobb’e as he dispenses sage wisdom to an unsuspecting public."

I like when he dispensed some serious wisdom on Human Giant:

The other live-action shows include Head Rush, which is like Cash Cab but on a rollercoaster; Survive This in which teens compete in tests of "endurance, wit and self-determination," hosted by Survivorman himself Les Stroud; Dude, What Would Happen, which answers silly hypothetical questions, a la MythBusters; and My Dad’s a Pro, a reality show starring 7-year-old Jaelen House and his dad, Boston Celtic Eddie House. (Uh, how was this show not called "Our House" or "House Rules" or some kind of House pun? Missed opportunity, Cartoon Network.)

What do you think, PopWatchers? Should Cartoon Network stick to cartoons?

Cartoon Network is the only channel devoted to cartoons. Hence the name. Stick to the toons. Just like stupid Sci-Fi Channel should stick to sci-fi (ugh, syfy.) Whatever, I just watch tv shows online or on DVD now anyway. Do channels matter anymore??

    • Taylor

How old are you, five? You must be an idiot.Find something else to do with your time (which you will never get back)rather than watch cartoons all day,you moron.

      • Anthony

Um Taylor this was the most immature and least intelligent response on this thread. Shasta has every right to be upset at these events, because when people turn on the TV to watch Cartoon Network they are expecting watch cartoons, not live action programming. He didn’t say anything the least bit offensive and your behavior is embarrassing. And I also don’t like how your response made it seem that he was childish for watching cartoons. Are you a troll, a poor devil’s advocate, or somebody who works for Cartoon Network?

LOl Taylor cant you see your the only one actually saying CN should change

    The beginning of the end.
It all starts with just one show straying from the format.
Then, like G4 or MTV there will be no videogames or music videos at all. Just reality TV and endless C.O.P.S.

    • Taylor

      Get over it!

  • BrandonK

Oh no! It’s MTV and VH1 all over again!

  • Tim

The name is Cartoon Network. Why should they show anything but cartoons???

  • tyk

What is the point of having speciality channels if the channels won’t stick with it? Why would I want to watch live action on Cartoon Network? Doesn’t that defeat the whole purpose of “CARTOON” Network> Why do I want to see movies on TV Land? Why is there no music on Music Television? It’s just stupid. Let’s just get rid of channels and move purely to an On Demand type system.

  • jd

yup, this is the beginning of the end. it has happened to court tv, mtv, mtv 2, and vh1. now it is happening to cartoon network.

    • Taylor

Who else other than you watch courttv? If you want to watch a channel that only shows music videos and things that have to do with music. Just start watching Fuse. This channel only shows music and things that have to do with music and nothing else. I am sure it is on your cable box somewhere. I watch it. I also love the live-action and reality shows on Cartoon Network. And Total Drama Action, 6teen and Stoked. And I can not wait to watch the new live-action scooby doo movie. I can not wait to see what else Cartoon Network has instore for us. And this is not the beginning of the end.

Look Taylor, live action shows are cheaply made with minimum to no moral values. Besides that, Cartoon Network is called Cartoon Network for a reason. They play cartoons, and should only play cartoons. Otherwise they should change their namesake to match what they wish to play.

The way you act on the message board is both immature and rude. By your behavior one can assume you are a preteen far too obsessed with the Disney Channel.

    • Taylor

The world is not going to end.It is just a channel. So forget about it and MOVE ON and QUIT YOUR WHINNING.

  • Dyche Alsaker

This is a terrible terrible idea. They’ve had foray’s into live-action on Adult Swim for some time, all of which are horrible. Someone should tell Cartoon Network to stop trying to ape Nickelodeon and Disney. It’s just embarrassing for all involved.

    • Taylor

This is to Dysche Alsaker. This is not a terrible idea it is an awesome idea.

      • Jeff Emerson

        Taylor, you are an idiot.

  • Dinosaur

Ye gods. Next they’ll be showing wrestling on Sci-Fi. Or game shows on ESPN.

  • Kevo

Great, another channel trying to go against it’s niche – just like A&E, MTV, VH1, TVland, AMC, “Syfy”, the list goes on. Even The History Channel is jumping on the bandwagon, airing Ice Road Truckers and Ax Men, shows that take place in the present, not the past. The worst is that these live action shows do not sound like they would fit it at all with the current Adult Swim line up of cutting edge and/or only funny to stoners batch of cartoons. Anyone else wanna bet within two years Cartoon Network will change its name to “reflect its shift in tone”? Pretty soon it will be CyTy network or CTN or some BS.

  • Kevo

Oops, my mistake – its cartoon network that is getting the shows, not Adult Swim – whoops.

  • Beaver

Now I guess it’s the “Mostly Cartoon Network”…

  • Anitamargarita

I love the idea, but only if they can make themselves the Anti-Disney. I was watching with my daughter one evening when they had some live action shorts making fun of “Zach and Cody” a Disney show I DESPISE. It was great! It was funny, witty and their points were SO. TRUE. They pretty much could have written a paper for me titled “Why I Hate Disney’s Live Action Shows and the Kids Who Star in Them” like the Daily Show could be “Why I Hate Cable News and the Pundits Who Star in Them.” Could be good stuff!

    • Taylor

You are the dumbest person I have never met.Live-action shows are now in.Why do you think that Disney makes waaaaaaaay more money than them,.It is because of live-action shows.Every single live-action show on disney is a hit. While the two animated shows (Phineas and Ferb and The Replacements)are not.Kids who have good taste watch animated shows on a minimum. What do you have against live-action shows?Just because you can put your opinion on this website for stuff like this DOES NOt mean that we (mostly me)care about it,you dumb moron.GET A LIFE.And STOP WASTING YOUR TIME.This message was to Anitamargarita.A.K.A person who idoes not know what they are talking about and who needs to get a life. And this is to everyone who thinks that Cn should only show cartoons. You are a bunch of crazy morons.

      • Liz

I am only going to say this once, Taylor, unlike you who thinks you need to repeat yourself over and over again and then tell everyone else to get a life. YOU are the one with no life. YOU are the one who thinks that just because you can post your opinion on a board that it somehow makes you matter or makes people care. We heard you the first time, now shut up. Do not do this ever again and fog up another board. This person even said they liked the idea of live-action on CN. They agreed with you and you still opened your big mouth, yet again. GET OVER YOURSELF. Open your mind and you’ll know what I’m saying is true.

      • Taylor

Ok, so let me get this straight, Taylor. You want thousands of people to lose their jobs to teenagers that only have to ask CN for a job? I guess you hate the economy. For every live action show broadcasted, a cartoon goes down. For every cartoon that goes down, 100 people lose their job. And a lot of live action shows are being broadcasted. And, these live action shows all copy an idea. If they broadcast well, they will replace the original. Or, CNreal will not broadcast well and this whole dream of yours is lost.

  • jen

This is great, because I watch too much Cartoon Network and this is the BEST way to get me to turn the channel! I can’t wait to avoid these new, terrible shows. Thanks!

  • J

They should but their listening to money specially since Disney is making bucket fulls off their live actions shows…

  • psb1962

JUST WHAT WE NEED ANOTHER DISNEY CHANNEL KNOCKOFF..I GUESS THE C IN CN STANDS FOR CRAP!!!
