'Where the Wild Things Are': We finally get a trailer! Goosebumples!

A week after its poster hit the net, the first trailer for Where the Wild Things Are is finally (finally!) upon us. And thankfully, unlike the poster, is isn’t coy at all about those Wild Things’ unmistakable, Maurice Sendakian mugs. Enough preamble — here’s the clip:

Don’t know about you, but from the Arcade Fire song to the glimpses of director Spike Jonze’s particular brand of magical realism to the implication that the story will revolve around our monster-PJ’d Max’s struggles with absent father issues, this trailer’s got me all with the goosebumples. The film has been delayed for nearly a year as director Spike Jonze reportedly toiled over and tweaked the project. But based on this first look, P-Dubs, do you feel it will be worth the wait?

Cannot wait to see. It made me tear up just watching. I read this book so often as a child, and now read it every night to my son.

  • KOZ

    INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!

  • MrFord

I’ll watch it. I like Spike Jonze and I used to read the books when I was little.

  • T-Rex

I have a new favorite movie!

  • laura

Cool! Count me in to see it! It was an awesome book and the CGI looks great.

  • crispy

That looks fantastic. I love that they aren’t doing the monsters with CGI.

  • Brandon

I can’t believe how awesome that looks…I was, like, instantly transported back to my childhood right now.
So much looking forward to this…

I cannot wait to see this! I think I’m going to borrow some kids from my friends and take them to see it.

  • nykolus

wowwwww… that actually made me teary eyed!!!

The use of The Arcade Fire song really amps up the quality of the trailer. One of my favourite bands.

I may be the only one, but I’m not sure! I, as an adult, would like to see it and think it looks really fantastic. And, if I had and 8 year old, I would take them in a heartbeat! But I have a 3 y.o. little girl who ADORES this book and I’m not sure that this movie looks like something she’ll understand. And the books were marketed to a younger age group initially. They have a very simple story and pictures. I just hope that they thought of all the little ones!

SOOOOOO EXCITED NOW! I got the biggest goofiest grin as it started.

  • Bilar

I don’t think this film is for really young kids…I heard it’s a bit dark..
But how awesome are the costumes? And Spike’s quirky touches should make it something special.

I cried. That might be the best trailer I’ve ever seen.

  • Cami

Excited! Love the Arcade Fire song used in it.

While I’m excited to death about this movie, I think it’s definitely geared towards me and my adult friends who grew up reading the book. I’m sure the critics will say it’s one of the best kids movies to come out in a long time. But they said the same thing about Wall-E. While I enjoyed that movie, I took my 5 and 6 year old cousins to see it and they were bored senseless.

  • totallydude

Totally stoked about it! I am taking my godson to see it after i check it out first on opening day

  • Robert

That looks amazing, and knowing that Jonze has been fighting to keep the wild things scary, not friendly and uplifting, only makes it better. I hope my niece won’t be scared too much to see it.

  • Danny

it looks cute but spike jonze is known for giving things an edge, i hope it has depth because lets face it, the book was very simplistic and could have been told in five seconds. But people in giant animal costumes, this could be a disaster or strangely heartwarming. I’m not going to get my hopes up yet

The alternate version of Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up” makes this trailer ten times… awesome-er? Whatever, this trailer just made me make up a word.

  • Liz

what the H is this?! I have never heard of this book. Did my parents screw me over on my childhood? I’m 26 when did this come out?

  • ARC

    I can’t wait…

  • cass

Is this an alternate version of the album track, if so where can i get it. Never heard of this, so it kinda went over my head

  • Meredith44

Liz, I really hope you aren’t serious. This book is a classic that I read every year to my class. It was written in 1963 and won the Caldecott in 1964.
As far as the movie goes, I’m not sure. I adore the book, but I don’t know if a credible long movie can be made out of it. While the trailer is interesting, I’m going to reserve judgment until I see/hear more.

  • To Liz

Seriously, you NEVER read or had this book read to you? I’m 25 almost 26 and I remember it clearly!

  • E-Man

Tony Hawk informed us all on TWITTER about this, This was onna the 1st books I can remember reading and later when my little bro got it we had mom make us pj’s like that, I have to make my own costumes now but you can bet the WILD THINGS will be runnin around my town soon!

  • ali

Honestly i never read the book. At first i was afraid it was gonna look like a bad 80’s character costume film but it looks wonderful and i will go out and read the book because the movie looks so cute.

  • Dennis Elbow

This looks awful. And, last time I checked Stuart Little was the most beloved children’s book of all time!

  • Robert

For those of us who loved this book when we were young (and there are many) this looks like it will be a great film now that we are “grown-up” – even if it is too dark for today’s youngsters.

  • Matt

“While I enjoyed that movie, I took my 5 and 6 year old cousins to see it and they were bored senseless.”
And isn’t that the point? We’re finally getting Western animation, stop motion, and now a children’s book adaptation for adults. It’s better than some of the old banal crap we used to get, surely.
