Last night’s episode of Flight of the Conchords wasunderstated, to say the least. There weren’t many advertisements forthe series finale, and the episode itself didn’t really feel like oneuntil the very last scene, when the boys were casually deported back toNew Zealand. Then again, it’s never been Bret and Jemaine’s style tomake a big fuss, so perhaps they just wanted to stay in tune with theshow’s modest manner. Then again…maybe it’s not really a seriesfinale? But until we find out for sure, we have the witticisms andmelodies of "Petrov, Yelyena and Me" to obsess over.
"Petrov" tells the gruesomely funny tale of a couple of cannibalslost at sea in the company of the delicious and outnumbered Bret. Thisfinal number was very odd, very creepy, and very appropriate. It standsout from the rest of their songs much like the guys themselves standout among today’s entertainers.
Unless you count the duo’s resourceful jam sessions that graced us in both the intro and closing, there was only one song throughout the episode, and that’s quite all right. They filled the half hour with plenty of hilarious moments such as Murray confusing Bret’s life with that of Luke Skywalker (remind anyone else of Frank from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia constantly confusing himself with Rambo?) and his nonchalant confession that he’s a groper. All of the supporting characters got their final laughs from Mel teaching a Hair Helmet-clad Bret how to rollerblade to Dave’s ability to reduce all things American to one line: “Welcome. Welcome. Forget about it.” The guys may have had the saddest role call ever, but did you see how happy they looked rockin’ out in New Zealand (below)? It just goes to show that no matter where they are, how poor they are, or how short their shorts are, Bret and Jemaine will never stop making music.
And so we (supposedly) draw to a close. Well, if these fine gentlemen truly are finished with this endeavor, I think we owe them a thank you for coming into our Sunday nights. They were good to us, no? It was a short stay but influential nonetheless. Needless to say, I’m heartbroken to see them go but trust completely that they know what they’re doing (they haven’t steered me wrong yet) and are only leaving us in this particular form. I cannot wait to experience what they do next. If that so happens to be continuing the show based on their lives as shepherds, well I’m game for that too.
So, PopWatchers, what’s your favorite memory from the Flight of the Conchords saga?

I’m going to miss this show very much!!! I really hope they make a movie!! I haven’t seen a show this much fun to watch since Arrested Development. So many Great Episodes- I have so many great memories of both seasons!! My fav has to be the “epileptic Dog” benefit concerts- that had me in stiches!!
Also I’ll miss the Crazy New Zealand posters in Murray’s Office!! Awww I am so Sad that this show is over- it was so GREAT!! I wish all the best for the Cast!!
The first season of this show was funny. We were extremely disappointed with the second one. The only funny episode this season was the “Too many d!(k$ on the dance floor.” The just couldn’t repeat the success of the first season. I’ll miss it, but I’m glad they ended it before it got really bad
Funniest show was the one where Jemaine sang “Bret, you’ve got it going on” in bed. I love those guys. They are touring right now so you should see if they are coming to your town, people!
I’m going to miss this show, but I’m actually sort of ok with it ending.
Though the second season was very funny (I loved “The Tough Brets” and “New Cup”), I still feel like the first season was clearly better. It obviously takes these guys a long time to write enough songs and material for a TV show, so if this is the end, I’m grateful for the wonderful 20 or so episodes we got.
Mostly though, I’m excited because I have tickets to see them April 6 in Tampa, which I believe is the first date on their US tour!
Sutton Foster as Coco.
Sad to see it go but maybe it’s just as well. The boys had lost their mojo somewhere along the way and it wasn’t as funny anymore.
Personally, while the songs were better in the first season, I think the show was better this season. The Art Garfunkel episode had me laughing until I cried.
But the best moment ever was their video for the song “Business Time”. The “Making love/ making love for/making love for two/making love for two minutes” section of that is my ringtone.
I hope against hope that there is a Season 3. But if not, I still have to thank them for some of the best TV ever.
I started with the second season and went back and bought the first on DVD. I have to say I think the story lines were better this season. Bret buys a a cup, so Jemaine becomes a prostitute? That’s classic.
I genuinely hope there is a third season – even if it takes a year or two. Or they could go for the broadway musical route in real life, that’d make me pretty happy.
Brilliant choreography for the opening and closing numbers by Jemaine and Brett. Just love how much FUN they are having – it’s a sweet way to recognize audience members who’ve been loyal fans and to confirm that no matter how the ball bounces with a third season or future band endeavors that they’ve enjoyed the ride, as much as we have. The 11:30 wake up call and especially the return to the beatiful and rustic domesticity of NZ have to be the most mirthful scenes in the whole series and brought a huge grin to my face. Great series to treasure.
Lots of precious moments here including Murray taking claim to “writer, producer, director” or self-proclaimed maestro of the Conchords’ success (of lack thereof). I also liked the song they used as perhaps, a metaphor for their career: being in the biz is risky business, so watch out, the sharks eat live..
Thanks to the Conchords for two inimitable seasons of comic and musical genius! The future is bright -stay golden!
It certainly looked like a final episode with the return to NZ. Loved the opening and the cannibal song, but thought the episode as a whole fell flat. Nonetheless, I will miss the guys enormously. Brilliant stuff!
I always hate losing shows that I enjoy, but honestly, this show has never been more than mildly amusing. It probably would not have survived had HBO had anything else good going on at the time when FOTC got its start. As I remember, at that time, they had two shows about therapy, the pointless Big Love, and The Wire, which nobody watches.
There were scattered moments of brilliance, but for the most part, this show felt like one of those end-of-the-night SNL sketches that goes on for too long.
I’m over here in NZ (actually in Masterton, Jemaines hone town) and I love FOTC. I’m one of the lucky few who got tickets to the charity concert on 31st March, probably the one and only time the guys will play in a small town like this. I love the show but think that the live performances really show off Bret and Jemaines talents. Way to go guys and thanks for putting NZ and little old Masterton on the map!
I feel the show was going downhill for the most part in season 2, but still, am I the only one who was all the while hoping that they would eventually find some success? Maybe because I’m a musician myself I focus on that aspect of the plot more, but they played shows to practically no one for two years and never gained any notoriety (save for the crazy dawgs ep). I’m disapointed that we weren’t able to watch them in hilarious celebrity/fame scenarios.
I love FOTC. acualy my whole family is! every time we have family get togethers we find our selves saying lines from their shows. My boyfriend and i and my friend even downloaded all the songs and epixodes onto our ipods so we can watch them( consetenly) i realy wanted to go to their concert in april, my friend and i were saving up long before hand and desided to go. we thought buying them online would be the best way to go, looked there was quite a few left, next day went to buy one… sold out. could you belive it! so we are in hopes (the whole family) that a 3rd season is created. i know that they say its because they have half song, but i know there has to be a way they can finsh them, i meen come on!! they just haveeeee tooo
:P
sending all my love to FOTC!!
ps. MEL IM their number 1 fan
As sad as I am to see this as the possible ending to this show, I think it was brilliantly done. Bret and Jemaine have filled my Sunday nights with such joy. I love that the show was an absolute flip flop scenario of their actual lives now. It ended exactly the way that it needed to. In my opinion, if they’d hit it big, been a success, it wouldn’t have been as special. ‘Two guys who start at the bottom, stay at the bottom, and end up at the bottom’. It’s realistic, it’s humble, it’s Bret and Jemaine.
Kudos.
My husband & I are huge devotees of FOTC – have Season 1 on DVD and even bought the CD of songs from season 1 for car rides. We were disappointed with this season so much. “Sugarlumps” and the final episode were really the only two times we seriously laughed. Season 1 – it seemed like we never stopped laughing. As for favorite memories, I’d say “Hiphopappotomas vs. Rhymnosaurus” and “Business Time” are standouts, as is the whole Crazy Doggz storyline. I hope they come back for season 3 with some awesome new material! If they quit now, I think they’d be going out on a low note and not on top. Anyone else agree with me on that?
That last song will definitely be one of my favourites next to the classics “Carol Brown” and “Friends”. I’ll be very happy if the guys change their minds and do another go-round, but if it doesn’t come to that this is a great
send-off regardless:)
Tenacious D-esque follow-up movie, anyone?
I agree with you Krista, I haven’t seen many of the new ones, but the first season was by far better.
And I actually haven’t seen the finale yet, I want to see all the episodes before it first.
My favorite moment was Bret’s angry dancing! So many funny, quirky bits on this show, though. Can’t wait to see them perform live in April!
I love FOTC. Its great to watch with a friend who also likes that kind of akward humor. I think the first season were comprised of all the songs they did in their shows, so they came out more refined. They had a little over a year to write all the new songs, scenes, and film it, so I think its okay that the second season wasn’t as popular. I would kill for more! Not a week goes by that I don’t turn another person into a FOTC fanatic. I hope they make another season with more comedic guest stars like demetri martin, jeff gaffegan, and that andy guy(elton john in the garfunkle ep). Hope to see them live. Fav songs are pencils in the wind, leggy blonde, sugar lumps, angels, im not cryin, rappers have feelings, and crap… I love them all. going to have to go watch some now on youtube GRRRRRRR!!! see what youve done!
