She has a pleasant enough voice, but it doesn’t have the strength and depth that Garland’s had…unless she’s been keeping it under wraps or something. Her “Somebody to Love” in that princess movie was just ‘meh.’

This is completely unnecessary. We already saw a beatiful, well-acted, award-winning biography of the late Ms. Garland. And as far as Anne is concerned, this echos Jennifer Love Hewitt making a poor attempt at Audrey Hepburn.

I don’t know, this has potential. I definitely wouldn’t make the comparison to the Audrey Hepburn bio-pic since Anne Hathaway can… well… act. Nothing against Jennifer Love-Hewitt, but she’s not going to be winning awards anytime soon.
As for the singing, I know we haven’t seen much from Anne (although what she has done has been good), but you never know, she may have some surprises in store. After all, Lauren Graham is on Broadway now doing “Guys and Dolls,” and she’s actually getting good reviews (the only singing we’ve seen from her is Lorelai’s drunk karaoke in the final season of “Gilmore Girls”).
I also loved Judy Davis’s performance as much as everyone else, but I’m willing to keep an open mind. Different actors can bring out different aspects of the character in their portrayals.

Oh no no no! Stick to the status quo! Get a TALENTED actor!

I do think Anne Hathaway is very talented. Gotta love her in Prada. Having said that I’m not so sure I would pick such a tall person for the role if the movie is to be authentic looking. Also whoever does get the role I would fervently hope they use Judy’s actual voice on the soundtrack as no one can sing like Judy and it was done so well with Judy Davis.

Ann Hathaway is just starting to show us her real talent… I would still love to see her play in Phantom of the Opera as Christine Dae…If not in the new Phantom they are working on
She has a natural beauty that astounds you and her acting gets better every day!!!

I think that it really depends how they tackle it. Anne Hathaway has enough physical similarities (except height) to enable them to do the rest with clever makeup. I think she also has the acting capability to pull it off. Judy Garland however had a once in a lifetime voice which made her a show business legend. If Hathaway is only average, or even just good in this area, the film will lose all credibility. Better I think to use Judy’s voice as they did with the Judy Davis version. I have to agree that Tammy Blanchard as the young Judy in the earlier version was excellent (and a dead-ringer for Garland). Now that she has matured, she could well have played the older Garland too.

Im with Adam on this one, she has what it takes as an actress to pull it off… She has the pipes to do her justice. And the most important her acting style is very hollywod-golden-era.. She’s been compare many times before to one Audrey Hepburn and Judy Garland herself…
She has this strong onscreen presence and builds a rapport with the audience like no other..

I’m sorry but I’m not happy about their choice. I’m an ardent Judy fan and feel this actress is definantly not the right person to play Judy. She cannot sing to a high standard either sadly. If they are wanting to make more money out of Judy then go ahead and do it but its sad.
Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis were so perfect in the part of Judy, their tv film was also not made that long ago, Victor Garber was excellent as Sid… its all just a lot of repeating for nothing… Leave Judy at rest please. We all know her life.

i’m sorry i have to agree with most everybody here. This actress Hathaway is not right for the part and besides why do this film… ‘Me and My Shadows’ was un topable. really. Those gals in Judy’s roles were perfect. Quite rightly they used Judy’s voice and well… i’d leave it like that. Hathaway would be a good Hepburn. I’d leave us with Me and My Shadows. If they’re wanting to make a stage show then I’d use the actress who played young Judy in Shadows.

Everyone’s focusing on Anne Hathaway. But what of the source material this new big screen movie of Judy Garland will be based on? I’ve read Garland fans hate the “Get Happy” bio by Gerald Clarke so how good can this film be?
With all the advances in film makeup and the use of cgi (ie., Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button), Hathaway’s height isn’t an issue. What I’m skeptical of is whether Hathaway can convincingly play Garland in her older years. Very few actresses can play a large age range within the same film. Cate Blanchett and Judy Davis can do it. On the otherhand, maybe Hathaway will only play Garland up to her early 30’s or not play old Garland at all.

No one can play Judy Garland and no one should. Her dynamic personality, her voice, her charisma, etc. were hers alone and cannot be duplicated or even suggested by anyone else. Plus that Gerold Clark book was terrible and some stories were made up by people he interviewed from the 1966-67 period of Judy’s life to get back at Judy.
