'Kyle XY': R.I.P.

Kylexy_lABC Family’s Kyle XY stared his last blank stare, breathed his last bellybutton-less breath, levitated his last syringe full of bacterial growth from an old cup. (More on that in a minute.) The series about the supersmart, superpowered cutie taken in by the Trager family signed off for good last night, canceled after three seasons. And we must admit we’ll miss the dreamy sci-fi teen. Here, a few reasons to mourn Kyle XY’s passing:

#1: Its starring role in ABC Family history.
Yes, the teen-focused net only recently launched itself into the grownup big leagues of cable with Molly Ringwald-starring Secret Life of the American Teenager. But without Kyle — and that brilliant shot-of-navel-less-torso marketing campaign a few summers ago — ABC Family was just the home of guilty pleasure movies starring washed-up actors. Nothing wrong with that — we still tune in for those, too — but we can thank Kyle for fully realized series like Greek, Lincoln Heights, and the all-too-short Middleman.

#2: Matt Dallas.
Stare into those blue fonts of bliss he calls eyes, admire those pillowy lips — add in that he’s a super-sweet soul who can act — and don’t tell me ABC can’t find some new pilot in which to cast him. In fact, I’m psyched by the prospect of seeing him in a role that doesn’t require blank innocence — let him grow some scruff and be a bad boy already.

#3: Its down-to-earth teen drama.
We were supposed to be all wrapped up in Kyle’s otherworldly origins — turned out his lack of bellybutton, his overdeveloped brain, his lack of social smarts, and his fledgling powers of flight/levitation/etc. all resulted from being "gestated" in a pod for 17 years. Then there was this evil Madacorp organization that was after him, and this Latnok group that, as we learned in the finale, was trying to make a bunch of Kyle clones (that bacteria-filled syringe was supposed to kill the life-giving fluid that would help make them). Whatever. The show’s real strength lay in its regular-kid stuff: Kyle’s adopted sister Lori (April Matson) having a "revirginization" ceremony after she and Declan (Chris Olivero) broke up for the millionth time, adopted brother Josh (Jean-Luc Bilodeau, who matured into more than just a wisecracking kid) struggling with his first girlfriend’s cancer treatment. Even Kyle himself benefitted from storylines that brought him back to reality, none moreso than his recently burgeoning relationship with fellow souped-up teen Jessi XX (Jaimie Alexander). When they kissed in the finale, it blew out a nearby light fixture — we wish we could’ve seen where that went. (What kind of damage would the inevitable virginity-loss scene do?) Which brings us to …

#4: That cliffhanger.
Alas, we’ll never see if Kyle kills Michael Cassidy — he was mid-choke when it ended — or if Cassidy’s really Kyle’s brother like he claims. We’ll never see an army of cute, blue-eyed Matt Dallases (if the cloning experiment were eventually successful). We’ll never see if Lori and Declan reunite or if Kyle’s first love, Amanda (Kirsten Prout), tells him she wants him back. But there was at least a small sense of resolution in what turned out to be the series finale: The whole Trager clan, now in on Kyle’s secret, worked together to help him foil Latnok. Declan and Lori were going on double dates and getting along nicely as friends. Josh was on his own after his girlfriend moved away. And best of all, Amanda and Jessi had put aside their differences to become an ass-kicking covert duo to help Kyle — without ever losing their wonderfully prickly rival energy. May we suggest a spinoff? Possibly that also involves Middleman’s Wendy Watson (Natalie Morales)? We’re pushing it, aren’t we?

What do you think? Why will you miss Kyle XY? What would you like to see its stars go into next?

I’ve got it. Kyle goes on vacation to move to Eureka!! Come on sci fi that would be great

I have no future plans to watch ABCFAmily programming…If they can just stop a story midstream and leave their faithful fans hanging like this, why should I invest more time in any other of their series thinking they might do the exact same thing?

That was the biggest customer disrespect I have ever seen from a TV company. Why make us watch 3 years of an excelent series if they can’t afford to film a proper ending ? Are they going broke ? What’s up with their new line up ? Do they think we are all 12 years old without any intelligence ? ABC Family has serious management issues !

  • Brody

Oh, Kyle, I’ll miss you! Speaking of insanely attractive actors who need pilots pronto, may I recommend The Middleman himself, Matt Keeslar?

  • Alia

I think ABCFamily ought to film a Kyle XY movie to conclude the series (and to give us that Kyle-Jessi sex scene and the city-wide blackout that follows).

  • Sara

I’ll miss Kyle. It was the only show worth watching on ABC Family. I don’t like where the whole ABC “Family” has turned into. I won’t be letting my daughter watch this station when she grows up. What ever happened to good family shows like Full House and Family Matters.

I was so mad that they left it at a cliffhanger. I love Kyle XY and will miss it dearly. The thing I hated most is that if they had rewritten the last 15 mintues it could have been a good wrapped up season finale.

  • Snarf

It was a more family orientated version of Dark Angel. I can see Matt Dallas in Brothers & Sisters as a potential love interest for Kevin.

Instead of mourning the loss of such a great show why aren’t we doing something about it. I signed an on-line petition to keep Kyle but don’t know where that went. Isn’t there something that can be done to bring it back. It’s been done before.

  • Carissa

I agree with Alia that they should at least have a movie to end it like they did eons ago with Gilligan’s Island. It is unfair to get someone hooked on a show and the end it without a proper ending. Cliffhangers are fine when the show is going to return, but not in series finale…way inappropriate.

Dang! I really like Kyle XY. I’m going to miss the whole family, friends and villains. Dang!!!!!

I think ABC Family needs to do a Kyle XY movie to tie up all the loose ends they left. The ending was too good to leave unanswered.

Apparently, for now, the pregnant teenager is here to stay and a quality show like Kyle is gone. ABC Family isn’t a network I’ll probably continue to watch. Kyle was the only reason I did watch ABC Family.

Matt has been cast as Rebcca Roimjin’s boyfrined in the pilot for “Eastwick”

I was pretty angry at the disrespect they showed long-term viewers by ending the show with a cliff-hanger (and virtually none of the storylines resolved). I’ve also given up investing any time into any other of their serial programs as I don’t want to go through this sort of things again. They should have a special 2-hour episode to tie up all the loose ends and at least bring some kind of closure. They can always add this to the DVD if money is an issue.

My husband and I were so ticked off last night after the show. It isn’t enough that they are getting rid of a good show but to finish it off with a cliff hanger? Are they nuts? I don’t want to watch any of their other shows that deal with pregnant teenagers (great role model there) and another single woman trying to make it on her own. Please. Hopefully, sci fi will pick it up and continue on with the story. ABC family can forget about my viewership.

  • not happy

This was akin to reading a great and long novel and having the ending ripped out with no other way to purchase another. It was bad enough that they never advertised when Kyle XY was back on this season but to end it with a cliffhanger!? How very disrespectful and inconsiderate to the millions of viewers!

  • not happy 2

forgot to say, I am not ever watching any show on ABC family again.

  • cpreynolds

I have watched this from the beginning. Loved the relationship with Kyle and the Trager’s. The actress that portrays Lori reminds me of a young Stockard Channing. I wish them all well.

  • ET

I hate to see Kyle XY go. It would be nice to see a wrap up movie or a wrap up script of an episode, just to have some closure. As to why ABC Family canceled the show: guess their pockets weren’t full enough. TV stopped being about viewers a long time ago…

  • Auriana

I’m still in mourning over the loss of The Middleman.

  • liz

Kyle XY was the best show on ABC Family. The series was not supposed to end that way, the season was. Kyle XY needs come come back weather it be a mini series, a wrap up movie, or continue to season 4 on another channel(which i would like better). It needs to come back in some way shape or form. ABC Family just lost a lot of viewers.

  • Mason McCarthy

Why would they even consider taking there best show off. I’m deeply disappointed.

  • Skeptical

Most lame series finale since “Married With Children.”

  • Fedup_Madchi

Our family has total disrespect for ABC for their decision to end Kyle XY in the manner they did Monday 03-16-09. The have consistently showed they have no consideration for the general population as a whole. They pick a small handful of viewers, get their input and claim that as their total viewer ship opinion. At the very least they could have ended the show in a better manner out of respect to its viewers. Our family as well as other family member and friends are boycotting ABC family. The shows on current ABC Family line up sucks anyway. Kyle XY was the only decent show they ever had.

  • Cat

I feel so unfulfilled with the season finale. There’s nothing else I really loved on ABC so it will be easy to give it up as a channel. In any case, I think us fans deserve so much better and ABC sent us the wrong message with that joke of a finale. We deserve a DVD with a proper ending, or a movie or SOMETHING.

  • Luis

Everyone sign the petitions to BRING KYLE XY BACK!
