More The 'Twilight' Saga

Will 'Maximum Ride' be the next 'Twilight'?

MaximumrideVampires are hot. We’ve known this way before Rob Pattinson ever donned glitter in Twilight (Bela Lugosi might not have inspired the shrieks of tweens nationwide, but hey, he still pulled it off, Hungarian accent and all). But mutant humans? I’m not so sure. But with news breaking this morning that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke might direct the adaptation of James Patterson’s Maximum Ride series — which follows a group of teens that are half-bird, half-human — I’m beginning to wonder if the movie has the potential to be the next Twilight. The two series certainly have a lot in common: they’re both fantasy series, they both revolve around teens, and they both boast a strong adult following as well (not to mention the fact that the family of half-bird, half-humans, called the Flocks, lives in a remote house. And have human-wolf hybrids as enemies).

But every teen-centric novel adaptation needs a heartthrob. So which hotties should play Maximum Ride, the series’ main female character, and Fang, Max’s strong right-hand man-bird? Kristin Kreuk (though she might be a tad too old)? Kat Dennings? Selena Gomez? Corbin Bleu? Joe Jonas? Thoughts, PopWatchers?

If were gonna discuss rubbish teen vampire movies, let’s consider this one:

Gah. Really? I’m not convinced that this will translate well, much less become as popular as the Twilight craze has been.

  • Elizabeth

Just go through the book and see who Patterson name-dropped. After the third or fourth “insert famous person’s name here” I quit reading. I’d like to make up my own mind who I see the character is while I’m reading.
And don’t sully my Corbin Bleu… I love that kid. Isn’t there some CW-er who just is “that guy” enough?

  • Sunny

I don’t think it will be as popular as the Twilight series. I’ve tried to read the maximum Ride Series and just couldn’t get into it.

    • Random

Are you serious? Maximum Ride is the best series EVER!

  • crispy

The next Twilight? Well, I guess we should get prepared for an endless barrage of pointless and redundant EW coverage every time somebody farts near this franchise.

  • Melinda65

I enjoyed Patterson’s When the Wind Blows, which was his first book starring a winged girl named Maximum. Then he started this series, but claimed that his protagonist was a *different* winged girl named Maximum. Still, I read the books, overlooking the underwhelming plotting and lackluster dialogue, until I got to the most recent one, which made me want to throw the book across the room.
I get the feeling that this could be another failed attempt at a franchise, like the Alex Rider movie Stormbreaker.

  • Snarf

    It’ll lay an egg.

  • amoremorte616

the next twilight? hardly. Twilight struck a nerve with mostly females. and as females we tend to over dramatize alot. (hence the screaming and obsessiveness). But I won’t say that it doesnt have potential. never could get into the book though. I think guys would actually like this one. A hot chik… there. call it twilight for guys haha.
and btw twilight isnt only a ‘teen franchise’ u media portray it as so and eventually it becomes what it is being labeled.
if ppl love this book series I hope the media doesn’t ruin its credibility like it did to twilight and its fnas.

    • Randi

True. True. I love Maximum Ride. I don’t think ANY disney channel people should be in Maximum Ride. NO Joe Jonas, Selena Gomez, etc. Agree?

  • Elena

I enjoyed Maximum Ride a lot more than Twilight. If that’s blasphemous, oh well. At least Maximum Ride made sense as a quick-paced, stream-of-consciousness narrative, because Max was 1st person narrating and they were all running for their lives. Plus, mystery and flying? Yeah! Although MR and Twilight both suffered from the lackluster last books, I think MR is a better movie idea, anyways. Twilight is kind of all about talking where MR is about people evading capture, which is always nerve-wracking and seat-filling in a movie theater. But who knows? It’s all about the actors and the direction, and the books are delightful, so hopefully someone can bottle that and make a million bucks.

    • Jenni

I think your right. The consept of MR is much more exciting!I read all of the books to both of those series and I have to say that I like MR waaaay better! i cant wait till the last one comes out!

  • Kayla

You can’t compare Twilight to Maximum Ride. That is as illogical as comparing Potter and the vampires. Each of these series are different in their own way, which is why I enjoy them so much.
But Maximum Ride won’t be as popular. The books have been out for several years now and they still don’t have such a cult following that Twilight and Potter do.

    • Tj

well you know twilight wasn’t as popular as it is now before the movie ever came out. thats what really started the twihard fad.

  • mickey

i loooove maximum ride. it definitely has potential to be the next twilight. twilight didnt start getting reeally popular till 2008 cuz of the movie, so the same thing will happen with maximum ride and that movie. i cant wait to read MAX!!!!
catherine hardwicke should not direct that movie though, she would ruin it!!!

  • Leigha Brandt

Twilight has been popular since it released. It’s fan base is growing widely everyday. I love vampires and I think Twilight is an amazing book. Maximum Ride on the other hand, I’ve never read any of the books, They are not even close to being as popular as the Twilight books and, The books were a success, without the movie, even though it played a huge role in it’s popularity. I think most girls would agree, we are more interested in Twilight, because it relates to us, we all love romances, and there is a ton of stuff that we can compare reality too. Maximum Ride could be the Twilight for boys lol. We are more intrigued with vampires because of the history and seductiveness behind them, rather than half human half bird people. Twilight opened the doors on our perspective of love and vampires, that’s why so many people were drawn to it even in the first pages. We were drawn to Edward in the first pages of his appearance. I doubt Maximum Ride has the same force or attraction as Twilight

    • Zoey Zoes

Oh yeah? So you have turned into a vampire once in your life? You made out with a werewolf, vampire, and had a vampire baby all in one day? They aren’t half human and half bird. They are only 2% bird. Edward is like ick. Seductiveness? I strongly question that. I don’t get why everyone loves Bella. She comes off to me as a forceful brat. -_- If you’ve never read any of the books how can you judge it? I read Twilight and I felt it was a waste of time. Maximum Ride has been popular since it was released. Gosh, girls only cherish romance stories now, don’t they. I am glad to say, as a tomboy, I don’t really give a crap about “sexy” Edward. The other has a lack of research which gave some fallacious information. Why would Maximum Ride be the Twilight for boys? Max is no where near to beautiful. They’re on the run for goodness sakes! Maximum Ride has stuff we can compare to, like Max is tomboyish and is sort of witty. Every book has stuff we can compare to, right? Can’t Maximum Ride open doors too? Can’t it show you how bad global warming is and how genetically modifying things are bad? See, Maximum Ride is educational too!I would hate to see any of the people listed to play any of the characters. Corbin Bleu = Nudge? Anyway, Fang is kind of like the new Edward, except cuter and has black hair. Gosh. Anyway, I don’t care if Maximum Ride becomes even more popular as long as the movie reaches or exeeds my standards.

Oh My God. I love you. u rock

        creeper out

      • Kat-o-line

        I. Love. You. I want MR to live on forever and ever. I am soooo addicted to the series! I can’t wait for Angel to come out! I agree with everything you say! I hate Twilight and people who haven’t read Maximum Ride are missing out on the read of a lifetime! I love Fang, and I am SUPER ticked off because he left! And now all these people are saying that Twilight is better then Maximum Ride! They are raving lunatics! If you never read the book, you can’t say which is better! I read Twilight, and I HATED it! The whole times I was reading it, I thought, “I wish Angel would come out so I read something no retarded!” I love the romance between Max and Fang, and HATE the fact that Dylan came into the picture, but if there wasn’t any romance in it, I would be fine. I would still read it for the action! So there, all you Twilight lovers!

    • kamlani k.

i too could care less for the romance crap. I admit it catches me but I would choose ACTION AND ADRENALINE over that any day! Max is not suppose to be some kinda sex symbol or anything. She’s tough, strong, independent, a leader, insanely hilarious with her sarcastic tomboy attitude, and finally she’d risk her life for the flock. And that’s way more than what people see in Edward and Bella. They spend everyday of their lives running and fighting which i think is more exciting to read about rather than reading about the beauty of a guy that’s to good to be true.
And i seriously could care less about how one series may seem more popular. I don’t know how many people are fans of Max Ride but I no that there are tons. The quality of the story is more important to me.

      • fanglover

go action and adrenaline my little love

    • Cassidy B.

I agree with Zoey Zoes and Kamlani k. A page out of any of those books is better than the whole Twilight series. Avian-human beings might not exist, but atleast Patterson isn’t making vampires sparkle! I mean who would be afraid of a person that SPARKLES? Would you? Probably not. And I heard that they were thinking of casting Kristen and Robbert as Max and Fang. How messed up would that be? Taking the main characters and couple from a sucky movie, and trying to put them into a movie that has so much potential to be amazing.

      • Jenni

UGH! i would never watch that movie if those 2 were in it! if i had 2 i would prob. kill myself! they r waaaaay 2 old to do that anyways…they r supposed 2 b 14 not 19 nd 22 or however old those 2 r!

      • fanglover

I love you you are my life come to my room-i mean…hi

    • Pointless

I think the reason this comment was not taken so well was your wording. Unfortunately Twilight became “popular” after the movie came out. Maybe not for you, but for a lot of the current fans. Saying “girls” while talking about your opinion and then saying “we” just makes females who like Maximum Ride angry…. especially adding the “it can be for the boys” part. Personally I think no one should be trying to compare neither Twilight nor Maximum Ride to their lives seeing as how its fiction… and a book. Yes, connecting with the book is cool, but finding similarities between the book and your life just because of an attraction to a character is probably not healthy. Lastly, books can be liked for any reason, not just an “attraction” to a specific character.

    • 432423

if you read the books it does have a bit of romance and i dont think its a boyish book, its kind of like me telling you twilight is a boyish book -_-

  • Leigha Brandt

I also would like to say, I do have one Maximum Ride book, but it didn’t strike me as something to read. The back is boring, lack of attention getting phrases and key words. The covers are bland and unappealing to most people. Must I add I read an article that 23,000 Twilight books come of the shelves each day…. I doubt Maximum has that big of a fan base and the books have been out forever. The Twilight books, including the cover and the blurb are all attention grabbers. Each cover is beautiful and tempting in their own way. I became drawn to the books instantly. The descriptions of the vampires, their beauty and figures gave me goose bumps. It had good action and suspense in every book. I read all of them in one day. I read Breaking Dawn ( i got that the midnight release day) and finished seven hours later.. even though I tried to savor it, I couldn’t. I’m sure Maximum is good, but it doesn’t even compare to Twilight. Not even close. EDWARD ( vampire)or flying half human half birds?

    • kamlani k.

Human-Avian Hybrids actually…Twilight and action?…i should read it again. I think i would’ve remembered action somewhere.
hehe…i thought it was funny how you compared edward with the flock. it’s almost insulting.:)

      • fanglover

*kiss* *love* banana pudding…i love you

    • Cassidy B.

Where was the action in Twilight? Bella describing Edward and Victoria’s fight as dancing? That takes the action down from ‘Kind of exciting’ to ‘That was action? I thought they were doing the waltz!’. And I would take a 2% Avian and 98% human over a SPARKLING(as in not a real vampire) any day of the week. Sure Edward can run fast, but The Flock can fly, fight, and they are evolving far past any stupid vampire can!

    • Maximum Ride is Awesome

Twilight got famous because of the movie. Maximum Ride is a book for everyone ,young people, Elderly people, Boys ,girls and what you said about being for boys is wrong. How does Twilight relate to girls? We don’t all have vampire boyfriends or whatever the freak Edward is because last time i checked Vampires drink human blood and don’t glitter in the sun.

    • 432423

well ya there are more twilight books going off the shelves each day!it has its own movie and millions of people love it! when they make the movie for maximum ride, the same thing it going to happen

  • Kathrin

    Next twilight???
Because they must compare every thing???
This is one thing and twilight an other !!
hmmm… But I’m exciting who’d play the parts.
    TWILIGHT IS THE BEST!!!

  • Erin

I read Twilight a few years before it got massive. And I was obsessed. Then only last year I began to read Maximum Ride. They both rate equally for me and although they are not the best books written, they have an addicting way to them. For a while I thought the Twilight movie was great, but then decided not to pretend. Chris Weitz will do a way better job with New Moon. Although I liked Catherine Hardwicke’s work on Lords of Dogtown but I doubt she could make Maximum Ride live up to it’s potential.
And hopefully the movie doesn’t get wrecked by all the stupid followers if this becomes the next “thing”, because that’s what screwed Twilight for me
