'Au Pair 3': It's time to call it quits

Aupairabc_lI never thought I’d type this sentence: It’s time to retire ABC Family’s Au Pair franchise. The first film, which premiered in 1999 and starred Gregory Harrison as a wealthy businessman who accidentally hires a young MBA (Heidi Saban) to be his kids’ nanny, then falls in love with her — is a true classic among ABC Family originals. The second film, which aired in 2001 and found Oliver (Harrison) and Jenny (Saban) trying to save a professional (and personal) merger amidst European sabotage, was enjoyable enough. The third movie, which debuted last night and took the couple on vacation with the fam to Puerto Rico, was a letdown. I mean, Harrison still looked great, and it was fun to see the kids — Alex (Jake Dinwiddie) and Katie (Katie Volding) all grown up — but who cared whether the CFO of Oliver’s company stopped funding his pet project (the development of an engine that runs on 100 percent water)? Or if Oliver let Alex go to art school instead of taking over the family business? Or if Jenny got to stay home with their infant daughter instead of returning to work (when she rarely seemed to hold the child anyway)? Or if Katie remained friends with Ariana (Kathleen Mealia, pictured far left), who it turns out her dad had hired to be her best friend/bodyguard at college?

Am I just getting too old to enjoy an Au Pair — say it isn’t so! Or did this movie disappoint you, too?

I was listening to the radio today when a commercial came on for this, and I thought to myself, “Okay, that’s about 1 and a half too many Au Pair movies”. Glad someone is bringing attention to this!

The whole time I saw Jenny she reminded me of Katherine Heigl.

I remember watching the first one when it first aired. I didn’t even know that there was a sequel, let alone a threequel.

First one is definite cheese to pass a Sunday afternoon, a whole day/night of it was a little too much cheese to take. We only have room for a few guilty pleasures…

The Au Pair movies had been a guilty pleasure in the past, so was looking forward to revisiting these characters for some “Gregory Harrison is still hot” clean fun. I was especially psyched that the movie was filmed in Puerto Rico, where I’m from. Boy, was it a major letdown! First, I was distracted by their choice of locations because I knew that some of them were not anywhere near each other and yet, the action moved the characters between them. Second – and most important – THE SCRIPT WAS AWFUL. It was painful to watch the actors try to make something out of nothing. Who wrote that dreck? The island looked gorgeous, though, but the plot made no sense. Wasn’t the local hottie supposed to leave for a great job in San Francisco? He gave up his big chance for a girl he’d just met? Guess Oliver gave him a job instead. Jeez, what a waste of my time!

i totally agree with the article.
I mean i loved the first one and also the second(but not as much as the first one) anyways the third one was boring and there was no point to the movie, though Jake Dinwiddie looked pretty good it was still a really bad movie but i still love the first one and second.

So embarrassed to admit I watched it, but I did. Dreck, indeed. The only bright moment was a (still hot) Gregory Harrison surfing in a wet suit. That was good for about 60 sec, the rest was a waste.

I loved the Au Pair. I agree with others that Gregory was and still is a major hottie. Heidi and the kids are great, too. The second two would have been much better if they had managed to John Rhys-Davies. I liked the 2nd one well enough. As much as I was looking forward to seeing these characters again, and did enjoy seeing the kids all grown up, the storyline was pretty weak. At least they made the conflict about business instead of severing the family relationships. It was 8 years since the last one, seems like they could have come up with a much better script.

Remember when Katie said, “How long have you known?” to the dude when he said he was taking off to San Fran!
Oh my gosh, the script was hilarious…ly awful.
