Another day, another "news" item proclaiming that there’s a frontrunner for the director’s chair on Eclipse, the third film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. Will it be Drew Barrymore? About a Boy’s Paul Weitz, brother of New Moon director Chris Weitz? Girl, Interrupted’s James Mangold? The Orphanage’s Juan Antonio Bayona, the Guillermo del Toro protégé whose name is getting serious ink today? Or someone who’s yet to even be mentioned?
Eclipse, with its army of volatile, rampaging newborn vamps, could be a truly frightening film in the right hands, so even though I’ve never seen The Orphange, I’m casting a vote for Bayona. In Lisa Schwarzbaum’s review of the 2007 Spanish-language creepfest, she refers to it as "this clever, clue-strewing Peter Pan’s Labyrinth." Very promising.
Who’s your pick?

Another day, another pointless Twilight post from EW. I hope you guys are getting a cut of Stephanie Meyers’ fortune.
filming on New Moon has barely even started and everyone is talking about Eclipse. Slow down ppl!Lets focus on whats happening now and not 1 year to 2 years from now. Focus at the task at hand (ie not royally screwing up New Moon making me not even care who stars/directs Eclipse anyways) We don’t need articles on every little rumor and specualtion related to Twilight. Its getting over exploited. I mean I’m a fan and is excited but I don’t need to hear for example about Dakota Fanning thinking about being Jane, oh she is still thinking, oh now she is confirmed. It really is becoming to much. Even for a fan
ummm…Eclipse is not supposed to be “truly frightening.”
The Twilight series is a love story.
I wish that, for once, the people who write these articles would actually read the series.
I can’t wait for Eclipse – it is by far my favorite of the Twilight series, mainly because of the battle scene at the end. I vote for the scary Spanish guy!!
I LOVE EW’s Twilight coverage!! I looooooove that we’re getting tons of info on casting and directors!!
I actually really wish that Chris could direct Eclipse…I have a feeling he’ll do a phenomenal job with New Moon!!
Yay!!! I like all the info, it makes me super happy on a dull work day. I also vote for the scary guy- Yes Twilight is a love story but it has some incredible action scenes written in the books. I feel like the first one lacked that edge- the whole James has Bella at the end of the film was totally anticlimactic. I want the newborns to be raw and uncontrollable with thirst, DARK. The whole scene in the field has so much potential. I’m way more excited about 3 and 4 than 2- New Moon was the most boring book.
Did anyone else think that James looked a whole lot like Bucky Covington on a bender?
Maybe I’m out of the loop…but do franchise movies normally have a different director for every film?? Anyone?
My votes with Bayona. Like when Alfonso Cuarón directed The Prisoner of Askaban, Bayona would bring a stylish and somewhat dark/scary tone to Eclipse. I know it seems to soon to be discussing this film but there is only something like an 8 week break b/t filming the two movies. I also think it would be interesting for every film to have a different director. Each book emotes a different set of feelings with love being the thread that is drawn through all four books.
Viva Bayona!!!
Love Drew Barrymore but given the subject matter I think I’d prefer Juan Antonio Bayona (Drwew should produce)
Why can’t the director of Twilight do Eclipse? She did a GREAT job with VERY lame subject matter. sigh.
why do they want someone new for each film? Scared of making the actors too comfortable?
yes, everyone keep their focus on getting a true new moon. excited about its potential, but concerned about the quickness of it all. hope dakota has read the twisaga.
Yea, I do think its great that (from what I’ve heard) Bayona would be good at directing action sequences, and can bring a dark edge to the story…but I also think its extremely important that the director knows how to portray a really beautiful, epic love story, because above all, that’s what Twilight is.
If I read EW do ONE MORE STORY on Twilight, I will scream. Four cover stories already has got me on the verge of cancelling my subscription! What is this? Teen Bop magazine?
Great idea. The guy should direct Breakign dawn too
To me, it doesn’t matter who the director is as long as he or she gets Edward right! He’s a conflicted and troubled character struggling with his feelings — not shy, like he was portrayed in the first movie. Jacob’s transformation should be interesting, though. . . .
I think that we should keep it in the family & go with Paul Weitz. They also need to get rid of Melissa R as the screenwriter. I am afraid to see what a botch job she will do with Eclipse! Eclipse has so much going on & all it weaves together and there isn’t much wiggle room to change anything like she did with Twilight. Let’s hope Chris W. makes the appropiate changes to make the story for New Moon be as accurate as possible, when he is shooting
Paul Weitz is a MUCH better choice than Chris. Chris botched one fantasy film (Golden Compass) whereas Paul nailed an unsentimental Romantic Comedy (About a Boy). Team Paul.
That said, my write-in vote is for:
1) Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire)
2) Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break)
3) John Fawcett (Ginger Snaps)
ooohh i love Guillermo del Toro i think that his protege or whatever should direct it! but i still wish catherine hardwick could direct it or also i think that mabye the guy who is directing new moon should direct the rest cuz then they will all feel the same
@Susa I think the beauty of any book is that each reader brings their own desires and experiences to their reading. Thus, the Twilight series is a horror yarn to some, an epic romance to others, and some less pleasing things to still others.

Definitely Bayona. Pan’s Labryrinth was amazing!!
Need a Rob fix? all twilight all the time at http://www.ourlosophy.wordpress.com
Absolutely Juan Antonio Bayona! He would do an awesome job. NOT Drew Barrymore please!
You haven’t seen “the Orphanage”? Shame on you – I vote for Bayona on that film alone! Look what Cuarón did for Harry Potter.
Life needs passion.

I would go with Bayona…..can’t wait for Eclipse!
I don’t think the teenage girls who are the primary target for this movie would appreciate a horror director. The love triangle is first in this book and the best part. They need the scary action parts, but I don’t trust a horror director with it.
I think Juan Antonio Bayona would be awesome. If only.
Even though the Twilight books are classified as “young adult” I really don’t feel they are. Even though it’s a bunch of teenagers, the theme, elements, and tone of the books are much more dark and mature. Harry Potter was a young adult book, but the movies are now taking the darker, more adult road. They need to aim for something similar to The Dark Knight or the newer Harry Potter’s and I bet they would appeal to a wider audience and perhaps even some awards, and they wouldn’t even really need to change the story. I mean in the 4th book Bella’s pregnancy is practically something out of a sci fi movie. What 10 year old is going to watch that? It’s an ADULT theme, make it an ADULT movie!
