At 3:59 p.m. ET Tuesday afternoon, the following IM exchange took place between my friend Robb (who really should’ve known better) and me:
Robb: guess who voted 52 times for belinda carlisle last night?
Me: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Robb: i had to
Robb: is that wrong? i had to call in 13 times then log on to their site with 3 different email addresses
Me: omg
Robb: like you wouldn’t.
Me: may i blog this?
Robb: um [censored]
Me: no last name
Me: just first name
Robb: whatever. you gotta do what you gotta do
Robb: here’s the reasoning:
Me: yes, please
Robb: Belinda looked fantastic, but was far too nervous and it showed in her dancing
Robb: and at 50 she’s by far the eldest woman on the show
Robb: i think denise richards is next oldest
Robb: because both jewel and nancy o’dell had to drop out, there’s no in between ages and all the other girls (apart from shawn johnson, who’s really muscular) are nearly anorexic
Robb: she’s a MILF in real life
Robb: i bet she’ll do better on a faster dance
Me: how many times have you seen the go-gos in concert?
Robb: 20-25?
Robb: Eek.
Translation: He voted for her because he loves her, period. (Is there any other explanation for voting for someone 50-plus times?) What’s your call-in record for a single night? And for whom?

In the days before the interwebs, I attempted to win Duran Duran tickets by relentlessly calling WPLJ in New York. I finally won by sending a Duran-song-title-filled email to a sympathetic DJ (subject line: Hungry Like the Wolf for Duran Duran Tickets!). And who accompanied me to that concert? One Mandi Bierly.

David Archuleta, 63 times… I really wanted to have him come back home so I could go to David Archuleta Day, and possibly be seen on American Idol. It was a riot, and a day I will remember!
I’m just glad to hear I wasn’t the only one power voting for Belinda last night. I think she’ll do better on a faster dance, too.
Off the top of my head, I can plainly remember voting about 60-70 times for Vonzell Solomon on “Idol” even when I knew it was kind of a botched attempt – it was top three night. I just wanted her to get second place to Carrie. And how does she repay me for my efforts? She… does nothing with her career. OH, and I just remembered she was one of the few people on the Idol tour who bypassed the crowds outside and didn’t do autographs or anything. That may have something to do why I began to love Ms. Underwood so much more. Hmph.
But yeah, I’m pretty sure I’ve voted hundreds of times a night for shows like “Idol,” “ABDC” (ah, the SoReal CruSade…) and more, just can’t think of too many particulars.
Wow…even “journalists” type lazy things like “omg” while instant messaging!
Yes, I should have known better than to write all that down and IM it to Mandi! Jeremy, I’m glad I’m not the only one voting for BC either.
I’ve voted for the following people for the full two hours, multiple times: Kelly Clarkson, Lauren Gottlieb, Courtney Galiano and Gev Manoukian.
I am glad to hear people were pulling for Belinda. I didn’t catch the number to call. But I love her. My hair was red for 18 years because of her. I’ve been to five of her SOLO shows (Go-go’s only once, sadly), though I’m sad she’s ditched us for France. I hope she stays on for a while, and that if she gets booted they invite her back to sing on a results night.
At age 23 I was still living at home after college. Upon discovering that the landline phone got through every time (whereas I would get busy signals on my cell) – I voted for David Cook constantly for the four hours after the finale. On both phones. I felt that strongly about his music. My estimations put the call-in number at around 750.
Elliot Yamin is the only person I have ever voted for, and I voted repeatedly. I just loved him!
I don’t watch “Idol”, but I’ve watched “DWTS” since Season 1 and i think the most voting I’ve done was for Drew Lachey (for whom I recruited friends who didn’t watch the show to vote) and Kristi Yamaguchi since it isn’t always the best dancer who wins, but rather the most charismatic, I wanted to make sure she got it.
Only voted once during AI and that was for Elliott Yamin. It was the episode following Mandisa departure. I was like, dag, two of the peeps I like are in the Bottom Two. Then I realized right there that I hope Elliott doesn’t go home. Like, I started freaking out. Luckily, it was Mandisa. The following week, I voted for Elliott and he was safe. Ha!
Steve Wozniak got my 13 last night. Is it because he’s the best dancer?… It’s because he has a lot of heart. Having worked with him before, he is definitely one of the funniest and most genuine people I’ve ever met. He even donated his time to film a series of web videos and is doing a video contest with my company: http://www.scottevest.com/woz
Win or lose, I think Woz is an inspiration with his great attitude, willingness to put himself out there and give it 100% effort. Shouldn’t that count for something?
Who else is voting for Woz?
30-40 times for Alex Wagner-Trugman. Sigh.
This is nothing compared to the 200 my friend put in for Kris Allen. And it’s only the semi-finals!
