Chris Brown: Should he be up for a Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award?

Chrisbrown_lLast week, as Chris Brown was charged with felony assault and making criminal threats in connection with the beating of his pop singer girlfriend, Rihanna, young fans started voting on whether to name him their Favorite Male Singer or his song, "Kiss Kiss," their Favorite Song in Nickelodeon’s annual Kids’ Choice Awards. The tween-centric cable channel — like so many celebs asked about the Grammy Night altercation — is staying out of the fray and leaving it up to kid voters to decide whether Brown takes home an orange blimp statue (yes, that’s what they are) on March 28. "Like all our KCA nominees, Chris Brown was nominated by kids several months ago based on his body of work as a performer," Nick execs said in a statement, "and the kids who vote will ultimately decide who wins in the category." Adding to the discomfort: Rihanna’s "Don’t Stop the Music" is also up for best song.

It’s no surprise that Brown snagged the noms to begin with. The 19-year-old singer has been a favorite of youthful audiences since his first album three years ago. (He even appeared in an undeniably adorable Sesame Street segment with Elmo.) And the controversy puts Nick in a tough spot, since Brown hasn’t been convicted. Would they take him out of the running if he were convicted? Probably. But still, could his spot be used for a better role model at this point? Yes. As it is, though, I’d venture to guess that Brown won’t be taking home a blimp — kids likely know enough not to support him, as they’re on the computer more than you are, and they know their Us Weekly, for better or worse. Meanwhile, it might be cool if Brown’s PR team laid off the active campaigning on his MySpace page. He’s the one who really needs to face up to the seriousness of what’s at stake, whether or not he’s been tried yet.

What do you think? Should Nickelodeon kick Chris Brown off the Kids’ Choice ballot? Or does he deserve a chance like everyone else?

Please, Nick has the capibility to have him not win one whether he is voted in or not. It’s not quite the oscars and I am sure they change winners/losers depending on what celebrities are willing to show up for the show. My kids won’t be voting for him and won’t notice that he didn’t win.

He thumped his girlfriend and threatened to kill her..come on..Nik should totally kick him off!

Not going to win. Nick picks the winners and if they feel Brown wining an award will cause parents to boycott Nick, then they’ll choose someone else.

NO he shouldn’t be up for the award. Nick should drop him and parents should be pissed. I’m glad some journalist is finally paying attention.

Heck no. He should never be up for another award again. People like this dont deserve to be in the spotlight. We the viewers, and consumers choose who gets that spotlight…its time to choose wiser.

Having him up for this award is insane. More proof he is clueless about his actions concerning beating Rhianna. First, the network should have withdrew him from consideration. Since their nose is apparently resting comfortably up Brown’s behind, then Brown should have shown some class (if he has any) and withdrew himself from consideration. Again, absolutely no remorse. Thug and ghetto all the way.

I’m turning Nickelodeon off until they take this loser off the ballot. My daughter won’t be watching any show that honors an abuser like Chris Brown.

It would be racist to not let Chris Rock win. Who knows what Brianna did to provoke the attack?

Yes he should, while I think what he did is 100% unforgivable I think the media has taken this story way to far. TMZ even did a story on him for playing basket ball and eating pizza, yes he is in the wrong for what he did but what should he do stop living. I love Rihanna and I only wish her the best but these things go on every day and the only reason anyone cares is because these two people make music. I know people feel like he should be locked up, if this is the case every MAN that has ever beat a women should be jailed. My mother was abused in college so I understand that this is no joke and I’m not saying this should be taken lightly but I dont want to hear anymore about how he is going on with his life let it go!!!!!!!!

Under no circumstances should Chris Brown be rewarded for his poor conduct – and sooner or later there has to be some sort of penalty. I don’t think he should even be an option for kids to choose to receive an award – he beat his girlfriend. It is not ok.

Honestly what can us veiwers believe. Every week there is a new tabloid out on chris and rihanna. One week there texting each other back and forth, than there arguing again. Either it is made up stories for publisity or its the truth. We’ll never really no the whole story. So i think Chris desirves a chance

OUTRAGEOUS! Chris Brown should be in jail. Nickelodeon should discharge him and distance themselves from him immediately. Chris Brown already had his chance and he punched, beat and bloodied it away.

  • TrialByMedia

Good to see that everyone still believes in innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Remember your reactions next time you try to fight a speeding ticket.
(He shouldn’t have been on the ballot in the first place because of felony assault on music).

I can’t believe people could even bring up the media as a culprit here. As far as I’m concerned, the media, other celebrities, etc. are not doing enough to send the message to Chris Brown that hitting a woman is NOT okay. I’m shocked that people aren’t making a BIGGER deal of what has happened. Sure the details of the story vary… but as soon as I saw Rihanna’s punched up face I knew I would never support Chris Brown again.
