Critique of “Nixonian” politics? Talk about shooting fish in a barrel. No one on God’s green earth, left, right, libertarian, socialist, is going to defend Nixon’s political path in 2009. The bait-and-switch is to equate Nixon with Reagan, which doesn’t make sense on any level.

Oh, and in reply to Jake Durham, TR did not institute any income tax. Income taxes were generally and permanently instituted after the passage of the 16th Amendment in 1913, during the Wilson Administration.

I think it’s hilarious that Tucker thinks conservatives will react negatively to Watchmen, because the New York Post’s resident conservative critic gave the film an absolute rave review! The critic, Kyle Smith, also wrote a separate column about the film and its potential appeal to conservaties. Smith said conservatives would enjoy a laugh at the film’s “Obama-like villian.” (here’s the link: http://www.nypost.com/seven/03082009/postopinion/opedcolumnists/who_watches_the_watchmen__158557.htm ).
I suppose it’s an “eye of the beholder” situation. I lean Right on some issues, Left on others(I view the whole Left/Right distinction as a red herring, really), and I loved Watchmen. Unlink the Moore-penned “V for Vendetta,” which was pretty direct in its Right=Bad/Left=Good message, Watchmen is much more nuanced. Moore really does seem to want to hash out various sides of an issue, something I admire about him(in the case of Watchmen, at least).
PS I DO sympathize /w Rorschach!

Give me a break — nihilism is the belief that nothing means anything. Nihilism has NOTHING to do with liberalism or the inherent American values that all men and women are created equal. People in support of equality and liberty care about and fight for such values. Nihilists just don’t care – about anything other than themselves. They are even WORSE than Rush Limbaugh.

The fact that many conservatives are claiming this is a conservative movie makes me laugh to no end. Because the film’s two biggest conservatives — the Comedian and Rorschach — are homicidal sociopaths. The fact that conservatives see nothing wrong with this speaks volumes.
