I believe the baby handicap is due to Ben and the Other’s releasing the gas and Amy’s baby was born pre massacre. The baby’s which have survived on the Island were already past the first trimester,(Claire and Daniella), so I believe if the baby was conceived on the Island then it is not going to survive. Sun’s baby was conceived before the crash and delivered on the mainland, so no problem with her birth. Therefore, I believe the problems lie in the gas released by Ben and the Other’s to kill the Dharma folks and prolonged exposure during conception and growth during the first trimester, make a bad combination for pregnant women on the Island.
Yes I totally agree with the polar bear theory. That’s the whole reason they had them doing the Pavlovian tricks in their cages. As soon as they figured out what levers/buttons to push, they would get fed. Once the bears mastered this, they were then fit to go to the donkey wheel, turn it–thinking they would get a nice treat–but really end up in Tunisia.
Oh my goodness! So many good theories it has my head spinning and my stomach in knots! Some of this is clever stuff. Love to hear all of the theories from everyone !
After watching the Le Fleur episode, and thinking about your commentary, I’m starting to think that the storyline is referencing another book, although I’m not sure still what it all means. But think about it. There were references to Egyptian culture, childbirth, and people wandering in the wilderness…hmmm…maybe reminicent of Moses and the ten commandments? Maybe the incident that sparked the whole childbirth issue has something to do with Ben killing off the Dhama initiative. Perhaps the Others were never meant to settle down and make a home for themselves (much like the Isrealites were not supposed to make a Egypt their permanent home), causing the island to “punish” them with an extended type of passover, where all the newborns (firstborn) die.

On the topic of babies. After the purge, who is left living in the Dharma houses. Ben, Juliette, and who else? Are the rest of the folks there from Alpert’s original crew? Are they all natives? If so do they not age? If they can’t age, can they perhaps not have children either? This would be a good reason to be really pissed when someone kills your people with guns like sawyer and juliet did.
Doesn’t exposure to radiation cause premature births? About Ben stating that Charlotte was born in 79, remember he lies all the time. He even said he was born on the island and we know he wasn’t. Ben seems to know everything about the island and the people there so he would know when to lie about something too. Also about Helen dying of a brain anyurism(can’t spell today) that was really strange like she had been involved with the whole time travel thing too.
I’m remembering that Charlotte said she and her mother left the island when she was about 3 or 4 because her father went crazy. I’m thinking that Olivia is her mother and Horace(who was obviously alittle nuts) was her father. I think that fits into the 74 time line.
re: Samantha Mathis
If that’s the case, she must really be kicking herself now…
Re: Juliet telling Sawyer about the Dharma Initiative getting killed off–she said “most” of them were killed off, but not all. So Widmore must have been one of the survivors. And Ben. I wonder if there were other survivors?
I have a question?…does anyone know what happened to Rose and Bernard?
Great theories all. And they fit within the larger framework. But with the Charlotte birthdate I think the answer is clear (but will be lied about/adjusted by Darleton later): They simply forgot about it and made an error for once. My guess is they’ll cobble all of these theories together and try to argue Ben was lying for some unknown reason and that was really one of Charlotte’s sisters. But I think they just plain missed this one.
Here’s the REAL question, has the timeline been changed by the Oceanic survivors? Will the killing of the Dharma Initiative still happen or will the survivors be swept away prior to the cleansing and have no effect on the outcome? I guess it all depends on WHO the baby is they saved.
The polar bear turning the wheel idea is not very realistic, mainly because you can train a dog to do it way easier than a bear. When you train an animal for a specific purpose, the training is as close as possible to the situation you are training them for, and there are no buttons in the well. My guess is the bears have more to do with the security system than anything else. Who knows what buttons may be down there….
Could the 4-toed statue be of Richard, who doesn’t seem to age because he’s one of the ancients. Perhaps these ‘ancients’ are truly some alien entity sent to observe human lifeforms and learn from their actions. I can’t wait to see who the baby is. Could it be the boy who had the hots for Alex, the French woman’s daughter?

I THINK THE REASON RICHARD DOESN’T SEEM TO AGE IS BECAUSE HE CAN WILLINGLY MOVE BACK AND FORTH THROUGH TIME WITH OUT THE NEED FOR A FLASH OF LIGHT. WHEN WIDMORE FIRST SAW LOCKE IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER LOCKE MOVED THE ISLAND HE MADE THE COMMENT THAT LOCKE HADN’T AGED AT ALL AFTER THEIR MEETING ALL THOSE YEARS AGO. SO MAYBE RICHARD CAN PASS THROUGH TIME TO WHEREEVER OR WHENEVER HE WANTS. RICHARD SEEMS TO BE THE CENTER OF EVERYTHING AND I HAVE A FEELING HE’S GOING TO PLAY A HUGE ROLE IN THE FINALE.
