'American Idol': No surprises, but more outrage, as the Wild Card candidates are announced

Another results night — complete with Wild Card contender announcements — and yet another opportunity to ask: "Is American Idol taking cues from The Bachelor‘s Jason Mesnick? Is the show determined to throw away my love, to leave me glowering and muttering the word ‘bastard’ under my breath?" Yes, folks, there are spoilers ahead, so if you’ve DVR’d Idol or are waiting for the west coast telecast, stop reading now.

Okay, okay…I’m being a little melodramatic. Outrage has always been a part of the Idol viewing equation. But after a night where the voting results once again played out pretty much the way you’d predict — with Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, and Jorge Nuñez advancing to the Silver Stools of Safety — the judges inexplicably thumbed their noses at three of Tuesday night’s strongest performers (Felicia Barton, Ju’Not Joyner, and Kristen McNamara) and instead gave Wild Card performance slots to Tatiana "I bring you crocodile tears and drama" Del Toro, Jasmine "Kara says I’m pretty!" Murray, Matt "I did bad things to Coldplay" Giraud, and Von "nice kid, not that great a vocalist" Smith. The other choices — Ricky Braddy, Anoop Desai, Jesse Langseth, and Megan Corkrey — were significantly better, but I defy the judges to argue that Jasmine has outsung Felicia at any point in the competition, or that Ju’Not wasn’t 100 times better than Matt during his semifinal performance. Ugh. Rage. Seriously. And where the eff was Mishavonna Henson?

Okay, time for me to write my full TV Watch recap, which will post early tomorrow morning. In the interim, check out the latest Idolatry below, then post your thoughts on tonight’s results and Wild Card announcement. Holla!

I thought the same thing when I saw that Mishavonna wasn’t in the pack of wild card contenders. I knew right then that I was going to be disappointed. I can’t believe Ju’Not of Kristen didn’t get another chance. They were the only two who tried even a little bit to change up the arrangements of their songs.
There are two many guys in this competition. While I agree they are the stronger sex this season, the wild card should have been used to give some more ladies a shot. There are six guys already in the top 12 and only three girls.
And as far as America’s vote. I am not a fan of Jorge. I was actually glad when Fox cut him off to switch to Lie to Me at the end of the show. Why is everyone such a sucker for the stupid ballad singer?

Proof that this show is a pathetic joke: Tatiana is not gone. But I am. Hate you, American Idol! Normal Gentle is twice the singer and the woman that cheap idiotic ratings ploy will ever be.

  • Tricia

So annoying. You are spot on. They WASTED spots on Von, Matt, Jasmine and Tatiana. Kristen, Felicia and Ju’not got robbed big time. Idol just jumped the shark big time.

  • Lollipop

Agreed, Slezak, but it’s not like they don’t have canon fodder in the other groups, so why should the wild card round be any different? I won’t be watching again till Tatiana is off my screen, though, be it tomorrow night or the finale.

    HORRIBLY dissapointed.
This is terrible. The people up for wild cards… Jackie Tohn? Jasmine?
Felicia and others ignored, and MISHAVONNA WASN’T EVEN CONSIDERED while Norman Gentle gets to be there?
    I need to go vomit.

This show’s judges are completely whacked if they didn’t give Anoop a wild card. I mean, we knew Paula and Randy were whacked all along, but this Kara b*tch was supposed to bring some sanity to the judges’ table. She’s yet another waste of space.

  • Pat

    Where the heck was Mishavonna?
She, Ju’not, and Felicia deserved spots over Von, Jasmine, and Tatiana.

I think they said Jasmine “was commercial” because it is more politically correct than saying “we need a second black chick on the show so people don’t accuse us of being too white.” Sorry, if they brought everyone who back who looked commercial, then they should have brought back Kendra, Casey Carlson, and the other hot chicks who couldn’t sing a lick. If they needed to fill another non-white slot, it should have been one with talent — JuNot. Tatiana did sing well, and being how everyone was treating her as a psycho case, she should get a second shot. Obviously, if Jorge can bawl like a baby, it shouldn’t be held against her. And I voted for Jorge, so I’m as happy as a clam right now.

I am sad for old Jun’ot and Felicia! They were amazing!! No so much Kristen .. But if Anoop makes it to the top 12, all will be right with the universe!

  • Buddy

It’s official American Idol is no longer a singing competition. It’s a reality TV show.

I wasn’t too terribly heated about the wildcard picks as some (I really do like Matt and think he has one of the more original voices of this season, compared to others–cough, Lil Rounds, Michael Sarver, Jorge, Danny Gokey, cough–pretty much everyone this season). I also really like Megan and Jessie. And even though Tatiana is annoying as all hell, she truly does have a good voice…
…but I wonder who will get the pimp spot tomorrow? hmm…i guess it will be the loveable, but terribly overrated Anoop Desai. He’s a given for a wild card, no matter how much he screws up.
I’m praying that Megan and Matt will be the other two. They’re the only ones this season who truly have memorable, if not perfect, voices. If Jasmine makes it I might throw up. If she does, she will be the Lindsay Cardinale, Leah Labelle, and Brandon Rogers of this season, being voted off first in the top 12.

  • Stacy

I’m pissed as hell the Jasmine made it over Felicia.
And I’m hoping that Megan and Matt redeem themselves… but does anyone else have a feeling that the judges already know who they’re putting through, regardless of how poorly they preform? There has to be a reason why Jasmine is in…

  • Richard S

Hang on, they’ve only picked 8 of the 12 wild card contestants. Folks like Felicia and Ju’Not still have a shot at a wildcard place. No? The whole show was very confusing. When I saw some of the previous contestants (but not all) up in the red room I assumed they’d already been picked.
And Tatiana? Really? We really need to see her meltdown again when she gets rejected *again*?

  • Idol Rots

You’re right, Buddy, and it’s not even a good reality show anymore. It sucks as bad as The Bachelor.
