Personally, I would see just about anything starring Johnny Depp. And I’d also see anything directed by Michael Mann (except for maybe Miami Vice). Put them together and I’m buying a ticket months in advance. So, it’s thrilling to see that the two have delivered on that promise with Public Enemies, at least based on the film’s trailer, which was released today.
Depp plays Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger and Christian Bale is the FBI agent assigned to bring him down. If you’ve seen Heat (and if you haven’t, you are a bad person!), you know that Michael Mann is one of the best action directors ever and can stage a bank robbery like no one else; Heat’s central robbery set piece, set in downtown Los Angeles, is one the most visceral, exhilarating sequences ever put on screen. We have to wait until July 1st to see if Enemies can achieve classic status but, until then, the trailer at least rocks. Don’t you agree?

Wow, could not disagree with you more about Michael Mann. I think he is one of the worst directors around. His movies are over stylized music videos and very little else. None of his movies have any soul to them whatsoever and always seem to be 45 minutes too long.
I can not think of a single “action” sequence he has done of any note. Heat, starring amazing actors was a snoozefest from start to finish.
I am so there
Bale will not get even an ounce of my support anymore.
As far as I am concerned his movies are unwatchable.
Tim, I agree. I will see any movie with Johnny Depp. The trailer looks awesome, I’m so excited for this movie. It’s my #1 movie to see for 2009.
Michael Mann, Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Billy Crudup …(picking self up off the floor) Um yeah, I will definitely see this one.
meso soup and mark your both idiots. this movie looks great and christian bale and johnny depp look like there in top form
This. Looks. Amazing.
Now all the Academy has to do is find 4 more nominees for Best Picture in 2010.
Looks great…sounds great too, not a huge Depp fan but am really liking the change of voice…something new for him. Also anything with Frenchie…love her.
I can’t wait! I was hooked just at the mention of Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. TOGETHER.
As much as I love everyone who is a part of this movie and it does look good, I still feel that the era of shamelessly glamorizing sex and violence is over. Greed, selfishness, and a general lack of ethics and morality are out. Service, community and sacrafice are in.
christian bale + johnny depp= best movie EVER!!! i cannot wait to watch this one. best actor oscar for depp and best supporting for bale!!!
I want to go to there.
When I first heard about this movie I was pumped. I love every Michael Mann movie with the exception of Miami Vice. But I need to watch that one again. I am counting down till July 1.
you had me hello
I’d see anything with Johnny Depp in it. Ditto for Christian Bale. I’ve been watching this movie like a hawk since I first heard about it–and I cannot FRIGGIN WAIT.
Johnny Depp as Dillinger = I am so going. Also, what a great trailer! I loved the music.
I am already ordering tickets. The trailer looks absolutely amazing! Plus I’ll watch anything with the georgous Johnny Depp!
Sorry, KR…must disagree that this movie isn’t timely. We’re seriously heading into what looks to make the Great Depression feel like Free Coupon Day at Wal-Mart. This movie couldn’t be MORE timely. That chaos and anarchy let loose as the nation plunged into economic disaster in the 30’s should serve as a moral warning to us today. (The fact that Johnny is hotter than a firecracker has absolutely NO bearing on my comments…ROFLOL)
To “meso soup”
It’s a pity for you only.
He will survive without your support as he is a good man and a wonderfull actor.
And what happened to him is just unfair, nothing more. Period.
Michael Mann needs to stop using digital cameras for night shoots. It doesn’t register as nicely as it would on film.
Well said Tanya.
Trailer: Nice. Been looking forward to seeing this movie. Johnny Depp and Christian Bale looks good in this one. The movie looks well put together. Great acting and action scenes. The great part? You don’t see Christian Bale and Johnny Depp, you see Dillinger and Purvis.
now THIS rocks! and am i the only one who thinks marion cotillard looks HOT?
I’ll be there at the first showing of it. I’m from Wisconsin. Parts of the film was shot in Wisconsin. So there! Besides, it’s Johnny and Christian. Uh, yeah!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh wow that just looks so awesome and badace. so effing can’t wait.
It looks and sounds really great, but I hope Michael Mann can also add a good script and violence that’s appropriate to the time setting.
Read The Book / if you don`t you will be lost!!!! GREAT BOOK
My wife and I were extras in this film…we’ve been waiting for it for a year. Trailer looks great, can’t wait to see it.
Yes!Yes!Yes!Yes!Yes!Yes!
Though, I should add as a side note that Depp has to live up to Warren Oates archetypal performance in the original film Dillinger–which also featured a great cast as well; not a masterpiece of a film…but highly entertaining, with great performances by Harry Dean Stanton and Richard Dreyfus (as Babyface Nelson). Warren Oates as Dillinger beating an insubordinate Dreyfus as Nelson within an inch of his life: “I’m John Dillinger! Don’t you get it? I’m immortal!” Great line delivered by one of the all-time great character actors! Good luck Depp and the Gang! Can’t Wait! I’m John Dillinger!
I worked on the movie as an extra for 2 weeks, and i witnessed the long, cold hours and tight schedule they fought against. I am TOTALLY there to see this. Depp was great in person, and I enjoyed seeing Stephen Dorff do his jailbreak scene as well. VERY EXCITED!
