'Idolatry': Are you digging Adam Lambert? And who deserves the Wild Card?

Categories: American Idol, Idolatry

It’s true, y’all! Life.com’s Dawnie Walton (voice of Explorita and Rageia on America’s Next Top Doll) stopped by EW.com HQ to discuss the week in Idol. On our agenda: The Adam Lambert-Meatloaf connection, the Group 2 contestant who most needs a Wild Card (Mishavonna Henson…heyyyy!), and the judge who gave the week’s most ridiculous critique (guess who?). (Programming note: This week’s Idolatry is a two-parter, so stick around after Dawnie and I finish dishing Screechy McScreecherson, and Part Deux will automatically begin to play. It’s true, y’all!)

I consider the comparison of Adam Lambert to Meat Loaf to be way off base and a complete insult to Meat Loaf. Jesse deserves a wild card and does everyone really think we’re going to have all of these guys in the wild card so there’s a 9 boys/3 girls split in the Top 12? I don’t see the judges/producers allowing.

  • INTENSE

i bet they have Lil sing first this week.

  • Uber iDOL

Normal Gentle for Wildcard. Otherwise it’s just another boring season of Idol.

  • Kim from Texas

I was very encouraged by the performances in the second group. Overall, the second group seemed much better than the first group. Is this because the second group had 2 weeks to practice before their performance?

  • K

I think Adam is great and the most ‘ready’ of all of them. I kind of wish he’d tone it down just a little because he has a great voice and it might even be better than the histrionics. I watched some YouTube videos of him singing songs from Wicked and Jesus Christ Superstar, and he’s just fantastic.

Adam Lambert is the best so far, in my opinion. I agree with Randy that he’s current, one of those “them stars” (Fall Out Boys, Robert Patterson … He does look a bit like Pete, the lead singer of Fall Out Boy, though I’m not sure about his vocal, it’s rather theatrical.

Watch the opening two minutes. If Lil Rounds is in the first half of contestants, she’s dead meat. If she’s introduced last, she has the “pimp” spot and is virtually guaranteed a spot in the top 12.

Love Adam! Ricky Braddy and Anoop for wild card.

  • Beth R.

I know why you’re digging Mishovanna so much, Slezak. In that clip, she sounds a lot like Carly Smithson Jr. I’m pulling for Adam and Kris. And I’m also throwing money in the pool for a Saint Danny vs. Devil Adam finale in May.

  • Rachel K

    Ricky Braddy for wild card!

  • Harvadol

I can’t stand Adam Lambert. Anyone who played a flying monkey in the touring production of Wicked automatically needs to take a hike. That said, I don’t think his pictures on votefortheworst/dlisted are going to help him! I can’t wait for the fallout.

  • kb23

LOL Beth R! If it comes down to a Saint Danny vs. Devil Adam finale I will vote with the devil for sure on this one! :o )
Mishovanna definitely deserves a wildcard spot!

  • Dee

Well Anoop definitely deserves one. I guess Mish does. Tatianna and Nick shouldn’t even be considered. I like the guys better so it doesn’t matter on the ladies side as long as Tat doesn’t make it back.

Let me be clear — I don’t dislike ANY of the contestants this season. But I do have an issue with the fact that a majority of the current “Top Six” and front runners in this week’s final crop of 12 can only perform a song at the top of their lungs. Since when did “LOUD, but in tune” become the new standard for a good performer? That’s how young singers like Jordin Sparks end up blowing out their voices during a tour season. And that shouldn’t happen to ANY promising young singer.

Sorry to disagree, Adam is not Meat Loaf. He doesn’t sing like him; doesn’t look like him; doesn’t act like him. Have you ever met Meat Loaf? I have and although you can like or dislike him as an artist, he is a genuine individual who appreciates his fans and his voice is much deeper than Adam’s. I agree though of the like/don’t like of Adam – not really sure about him yet and hopes he stops screaming his songs and gets rid of the stage act so we can actually see what he is like – for real.

Anoop is my favorite. I think he definitely deserves a wildcard spot. Ricky Braddy and Mishavonna are good, too. I think Matt G. really messed up his chances. He was one of my favorites, but if he insists on singing Cold Play he is not going to get far.

  • monica

HAhahahahaha!!! ADam Lambert is Meatloaf!! Tat was hilarious!!
Seriously, not everyone is digging Adam at all, i wouldn’t buy his album if he won, altho i don’t disagree he is a great performer…but tat VOICE! Uggghh!
Kris Allen – so so cute with so so vocals. I do like his humility but how far can tat bring him?
Anoop definitely for Wild card, he can bring so much more!! And Matt Giraud..i keep remembering his Georgia…he should get 1 more chance..

  • Casey

I agree with the Idolatry Producer’s sneaky TV screen message…. bring back Jesse!!!

  • suebrody

Yes, I think Adam is extremely talented, and I am all for Ricky and Anoop for wild card and Top 12. But honestly, why the hating on Adam? Okay, he was in the pimping slot, but that wasn’t HIS fault. I think we know who is going to be last this week (Lil Rounds) and I think she is overrated. But you could have put him 1st and he still would have rocked out. Plus Meatloaf=Adam? Seriously? Whaaat? Sorry, Slezak, but you are TOTALLY wrong on this one, and Adam is going Top 5 at least. Watch it happen.

  • Denise

I love Adam Lambert. I see him winning this year. I would like to see Mishavonna and Anoop brought back for the wildcards.

  • Tara

Over the top or whatever people might say about Adam, I’ve liked him since the audition. Simon talks about certain contestants having the likability factor but never mentions Adam. He seems to me like a well rounded guy, well spoken and has good manners. There’s something very different and likable about him, and it’s not the guyliner, hair, etc. His personality shines I think.

  • Amy

Adam is not authentic, doesn’t connect with the audience and screams when he sings.

  • JillS

How rigged is this thing gonna look if Lil Rounds is scheduled to sing last? I’ll watch but, I’ll be rolling my eyes the whole time.

  • clandrith

Adam Lambert = Sam Harris! ‘Member him? Adam’s voice is a spot on match. Adam Lambert is extremely talented. Yes, he needs to pull back slightly, but I think that affectation is a result of how many years this guy has been performing in the theater and singing to reach the rafters. Someone just needs to tap Adam on the shoulder and remind him that he isn’t on Broadway. But there have been plenty of rock and roll wailers — Brian Howe, Paul Rodgers, Robert Plant, and yes, even Meatloaf in his prime, the list is very long. As long as Adam wails in tune and knows when to soften his incredible instrument, I would have no problem rooting for him to win AI. Especially over Danny, Lil or some of the others.

  • LT

No, Sam Harris = Von Smith, who will be singing Tuesday. They sing the same types of songs. there is even a video of the two of them on youtube.

  • idolbeat

Hoping for a piano to be rolled out on Thursday with Matt G’s name on it -for the first time I hope you are wrong Michael. Georgia on My Mind was better than most of the performances shown the last two weeks. For that reason, he deserves another chance!

  • BobParr

I don’t think he is going to get many “tween” or grandma votes after those photos of him swapping spit with his buddy are widely released.

  • clandrith

Sorry LT. Gotta agree to disagree. Von Smith = pitchy singing monster trying to devour the mic, my teevee and me! Von reminds me of South Park’s Terrence and Phillip. The whole top of his head opens on every note. Just not attractive. I was referring to Adam Lambert’s pitch, intonation and register, especially when he is reaching for those high notes. First time I heard Adam I had a Sam Harris flashback. And as far as I can tell neither Sam’s nor Adam’s entire head opens when they sing. ;)

  • Leila

Adam’s screeches are cool. I am rooting for him because he’s a true performer besides having great chops. I’m looking forward to his next performance because he’ll probably go for a balad with just a few power moments, just like he does on “I just love you” and “I can’t make you love you” (see YouTube videos).
My wildcard picks are Mishavonna Henson, Megan Corkrey and Anoop Desai. We’ll see how Group 3 does…
