No Doubt guesting on 'Gossip Girl?' The comeback continues

On the heels of the announcement that Orange County’s finest are reuniting for a summer 2009 tour, their first in five years, comes news of the band’s appearance on teen-soap supreme Gossip Girl. What do we know? That they’ll perform 1981 classic "Stand and Deliver" by Adam and the Ants (a band who wore makeup nearly as well as Stefani does), and that it will be the show’s finale, airing May 11. (The idea that Chuck Bass will try to mack his way into Gwen’s pants for Park Avenue cougar points is but a dream.)

So how do you think this will hold up in the grand pantheon of major-musicians-who-incongruously-perform-at-a-high-school-prom-or-local-coffee-house for TV shows? An act as sleek and pop-glam as No Doubt seems a perfect fit for the high-gloss world GG inhabits — as did pairings like the Killers on The O.C., or Mary J. Blige on One Life to Live. (She’s "No More Drama," they’re nonstop drama!)

But the vast majority are just deliciously random combos. I mean, Whitney Houston on Silver Spoons? The Flaming Lips on the original 90210? The Doobie Brothers on What’s Happening? Or the Wu-Tang Clan on The Larry Sanders Show, with the monumentally uncomfortable (and NSFW) Jeffrey Tambor, pre-Arrested Development:

After the jump, Devo on short-lived ’80s sitcom Square Pegs (teeny teenage dancing Sarah Jessica Parker alert!).

These are but a couple of our personal olden-times favorites. Readers, what are yours?

Devo on Square Pegs. Skip to about 4:45 for the performance:

You know, my motto has always been ‘anything involving Devo cannot be bad’, but I now have to take that back. I feel like my entire reality has just imploded in on itself.

I recommend you a very interesting place ___MillionaireLoving co m_____ It ’s where you have the opportunity dreaming about dating a millionaire and make it true!

The show that did the whole “famous band at a high school thing” the most logical was Smallville. I mean, if anyone could hire Lifehouse to play multiple times and All American Rejects to play at his house, it would have to be the richest guy in the world Lex Luthor.

The Gossip Girl finale is on May 18th, not May 11th. Please get your dates right.

My personal favorite has always been Cibo Matto performing at The Bronze on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The Bronze is the original Bait Shop, after all.

my favorite is the OTHER time No Doubt performed on the then-WB. when Dawson and the gang went to a No Doubt concert back in 2002, the Rock Steady era.

This will be interesting. I can’t believe my two favorite things are going to be coming together! Best. Night. Ever!

I liked Michelle Branch on Buffy. Her song “Goodbye to You” really fit the scene and she seemed like the type of singer who would play the Bronze.

It bothered me how Fall Out Boy and Cheryl Crow both went to One Tree Hill.
I can’t wait till No Doubt appears on GG. Love it!

Those 90210 performances were always terrible like Cathy Dennis and Monica and Color Me Badd and Cathy Dennis again and well you get the point!

  • Adam B.

Warren Zevon on Larry Sanders was brilliant. For random, Davy Jones on the Brady Bunch.

ooh! and Sheryl Crow on One Tree Hill, i really liked that too. the private little impromtu “concert” for Haley and Nathan. <3

just because those were singers you don’t like doesn’t mean they were bad. especially Monica, she was an r&b princess of the 90s.
