Clip du jour: Everyone loves 'Wheel of Fortune' (including James Brown and Little Richard)

On Feb. 27, Wheel of Fortune airs its 5,000th show. Still averaging more than 34 million viewers a week in its 26th year, the game show truly is a part of Americana. It’s what families watch during dinner when they want to avoid having to talk to each other (Mike Bruno: "How was YOUR day, Mike?" "SHHHH, she’s buying a vowel!"), what adult siblings watch in their parent’s hospital room when they want to determine who’s smarter but know that neither of them is intelligent enough for Jeopardy! (Mandi Bierly: "I wasn’t looking at the TV. That doesn’t count!").

Join PopWatch in saluting Wheel of Fortune, which has seen more than 200 other game shows come and go since its debut in syndication in 1983. And please, watch the clip below of James Brown and Little Richard. Little Richard is so happy when Brown gets an ‘R’. (And you’ll be so angry when Brown buys an ‘I’ when he really should’ve been able to solve the puzzle without it.)

'American Idol': And now there are six!

Warning: Out of respect for our West coast readers, I’m not going to name the three contestants who advanced to American Idol‘s season eight finals tonight, but I’m going to drop some not-very-well-hidden hints, so read at your own caution. Seriously. If you don’t want to know who went home, stop reading. Very well. You’ve been warned. So…two of my favorites from last night — the chick with the fuscia hair, and the dude whose early Idol run vaguely resembled a Where’s Waldo? puzzle — made it through to the top 12, as did the guy who got compared to Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson. I’m kinda bummed the contestant who shares a last name with the creator of the Muppets didn’t survive, but she was quite respectful to the judges tonight, and maybe just maybe she earned herself a Wild Card performance slot in the process. We’ll find out in just a week! In the interim, what did you think of the second round of season 8 semifinal results? Check out our latest Idolatry episode below, then weigh in with your thoughts on our message boards. In the meantime, I’m off to write my full TV Watch recap, which should post early tomorrow morning. Holla!

'The NeverEnding Story' to never end all over again?

Falcor_lLeonardo DiCaprio’s film production company is considering remaking/"rebooting" The NeverEnding Story. My first solemn wish is that they cast Mischa Barton. I’m hoping they don’t go through with this. Not because I hold that book sacred, not because the ’80s movie is a particularly excellent adaptation, not because the lesser-known sequel staring the late Jonathan Brandis is also totally acceptable, but because there are way too many other books that could make fantastic movies.

Please, instead of remaking The NeverEnding Story, how about an awesome version of A Wrinkle In Time, which has never had a decent adaptation. How about The BFG? The Giver? The Girl With the Silver Eyes (way less popular, but a personal pick)? The Egypt Game? The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon (I Mean Noel)? Give these books a chance!

Instead of another film staring Falcor the Luckdragon, what kids’ book would you like to see make the leap to the big screen? Let’s pretend, for these wish-making purposes, that the adaptation would be great. C’mon, a nerd can dream…

'Adventureland' and 'I Love You, Man' red-band trailers: More excited to see the movies now?

Confession: When the original trailer for Adventureland — a theme park comedy with Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart — hit the web a while back, I was a little underwhelmed. It looked cute but a little tame — the movie equivalent of one of those pirate ship rides that swings back and forth and makes you spill your Nerds but isn’t really all that exciting.

But this new red-band trailer (below, and definitely NSFW!) actually has me looking forward to the movie, which comes off as a less manic cousin of Superbad (it was written and directed by Superbad helmer Greg Mottola). Does that mean I have a dirty mind? Probably. But I ask you: What is a teen comedy without restricted substances, clumsy make-out sessions, and crude genitalia-based insults?

Same goes for the new red-band trailer of the Paul Rudd-Jason Segel comedy I Love You, Man, which ramps up the raunch — but, in doing so, it also gives you a better feel for the movie’s characters.

Your turn, PopWatchers: Do these red-band trailers make you want to see the movies more?

Padma Lakshmi pitches burgers: Do you buy it?

Padmalakshmi_lTop Chef Season 5 is officially over, but you won’t have to wait long for your next Padma Lakshmi fix: People.com reports that the model/chef/author/host has already shot a new commercial for Hardee’s Bacon Western Thickburger. Hang on a sec. Doesn’t it seem a little weird that Lakshmi — a model-thin health nut who wrote a book of low-fat recipes — is hawking fast food, let alone something called a "thickburger"? And would Padma’s famously picky palate really be down with Hardee’s? Somehow we always imagined her diet to be more along the lines of…

Breakfast: Freshly picked mangoes covered in honey that she harvests with her bare hands from wild beehives.

Lunch: Locally grown dandelion salad, glass of room temperature rainwater.

Dinner: Pomegranate juice, steamed bamboo, one Pez tablet (a girl’s gotta treat herself!).

What do you think PopWatchers? Do you believe Padma would actually eat a Thickburger? And on a serious note, how awesome does a Bacon Thickburger sound right now? Yum.

Sugarland 2009 tour announcement exclusive!

Categories: Music

Sugarland_l

After winning two Grammys and scoring two ACM nominations, our buddies in Sugarland are about to celebrate with a month-long European jaunt that kicks off tonight with two warm-up shows in Athens, Ga. But this April, Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush will be back stateside — and PopWatch has their exclusive! official! tour announcement, like SportsCenter, right now! Aside from already-set dates with Keith Urban and Kenny Chesney, the Atlanta country music duo have added a slew of headlining shows across this fine continent — including a stop at New Orleans’ famed Jazz Fest in May — for what Bush is calling the I Was There Tour, designed to enhance their already-formidable live experience.

"Jennifer and I want people to go home and tell their friends — or even their kids or their grandkids one day — that they were there," he says. "We put a lot of pride in our show, and we’re doing a lot of things this year to create fan culture." To reinforce the uniqueness of each night’s performance, they’ve commissioned limited-edition rock posters for every date from Austin’s Decoder Ring design firm — better known for work with bands like the Hold Steady. Bush acknowledges this poster-a-show concept is something rock giants Pearl Jam established long ago: "Pearl Jam are pros," he says. "These guys have been changing the face of music for a while. Open up and learn from the playbook."

'The Simpsons' gets two more seasons: Are YOU still watching?

Simpsons_l_2The news wasn’t shocking, but certainly enough to make fans shout "Woohoo!": Fox has renewed The Simpsons for two additional seasons, which means that we will be treated to at least 493 episodes of Homer’s odysseys. (The network couldn’t have picked up seven extra episodes to make it an even 500? C’mon!) Currently in its 20th season and averaging 8.7 million viewers, the animated series is already the longest-running prime-time comedy ever. And while The Simpsons no longer carries the must-see clout it did in the ’90s, it can still pack a punchline. (I’m definitely hoping the writers will huddle again soon to whip up another movie.)

What do you think? Are you happy that that the Springfield gang will live to see a few more years? Will you hang in there until the bitter end? Let’s play a little game called Guess How Many Episodes The Simpsons Will Make. You write your prediction below, and many moons from now when we learn the answer, maybe we’ll award the winner something cool, like a case of Duff beer.

'Dexter' action figure destined to haunt my nightmares

Dextertoy_lAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! I can definitely get behind a Dexter action figure — I may or may not have a few Lost action figures  (I so do) — but that is one terrifying, icy stare. I don’t even mind the creepy cultural fetish for serial killers; it’s the weirdly demonic face that’s freaking me out. Sorry, Michael C. Hall, but this is not your proudest day.

Although, for only $16.99…do I spy next season’s Doll Bachelor? [via]

Obama family to adopt a Portuguese Water Dog

Categories: Misc.

Politicos might be more concerned with Obama’s proposed budget, his plan for Iraq, blah blah blah. But for some of us, the real news out of Washington today is that Michelle Obama has tentatively picked a breed for Sasha and Malia’s puppy. And the winner of America’s Next Top Dog is….The Portuguese Water Dog!

If your response to that was, "The wha..?" you’re not alone. And while Wikipedia can tell you all the boring facts (hypoallergenic, 40-60 lbs, etc.), we turned to YouTube to teach us what we really need to know about the dogs: Are they cute? Do they really swim? And wait, exactly how cute are we talking? (Answers: Yes, Yes, and OMGSOADORABLE). Check out our picks for the Top 3 PWD videos on YouTube:

3. "Portuguese Waterdog litter"

Lesson learned: As puppies, these dogs have a degree of adorableness that may be harmful to the naked eye. Maybe if Hillary hits a snag in negotiations with a foreign country, they could just send the First Pup as an ambassador with a little note around its collar. Who could say no?

The Top 2, after the jump.

'Watchmen': The early reviews are in

Watchmen_lWe’re still eight days away from Watchmen Day (March 6, for those of you who don’t follow such things), but people are beginning to lay eyes on Zack Snyder’s epic superhero treatise/action spectacle. It had its World Premiere in London a few days ago, and it’s been screening here and there for select parties — and with the Cone of Silence starting to lift, we’re getting a sense of the early reaction. In a word: mixed.

As anyone with half a brain might’ve predicted, from the Fan quadrant, Watchmen is, for the most part, a life-changing, Holy Grailicious event. But the mainstream media — mostly made of critics who haven’t spent untold hours digesting Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ seismic graphic novel — isn’t quite as rapturous.

A quick early-reviews rundown, after the jump. And, of course, be sure to check back next week for the official EW review.
