Wanda Sykes doing White House correspondents' dinner: Must-see C-SPAN

163421__wanda_lWanda Sykes has been tapped to perform at the 2009 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in May, which makes her the first openly gay entertainer to headline the annual event, and the first female comedian to do so since Elayne Boosler in 1993. Sykes, currently the funniest part of The New Adventures of Old Christine, found her way to a career in comedy after deeming the five years she spent working for the NSA too boring (or so she just told the Advocate). In recent years, the correspondents dinner has become increasingly high-profile, most notably with Stephen Colbert’s controversial appearance in 2006. Following that, the White House Correspondents’ Association picked safer acts, like Rich Little in 2007 and Craig Ferguson last year (a clip of her riffing on Ferguson’s Late Late Show, after the jump.)

I’m crazy about Sykes. I think her stand-up is gold, her frequent late night .appearances never disappoint, and for a relatively stodgy, self-congratulatory affair, she’s just what the C-SPAN doctors ordered. Who else thinks putting her on the bill instantly makes the Correspondents’ Association dinner a must-see?

'30 Rock' recap: It's Valentine's Day. Stew in it. Nords!

This recap has been brought to you by the McFlurry, Dunk–…[nevermind], and StopShowingOff.com

I loved the way last night’s 30 Rock handled Valentine’s Day, because there are cool-ish women out there who tend to not prioritize a timely calculation as to when exactly this "holiday" will attack. If it happens to fall on Saturday/Stew night, then WHATEVER, and personally I have trouble wrapping my creme-filled head around the notion that there’s only one special day we should stuff our faces full of chocolate…not to mention substitute cheddar cheese for water. When you live every day like it’s February 14th, it becomes nearly impossible to make the distinction. No 30 Rock clip has better illustrated this philosophy than Lemon’s proposed alternative to Jack’s high-class V-Day dessert. Press play below, and try not to die laughing…tomorrow’s VALENTINE’S DAY, after all.

(Click here for Tina Fey’s take on the perfect doughnut: "You go blind for about five seconds when you eat it.") More 30 Rock, after the jump.

'The Office': It is your birthday poll

On last night’s episode of The Office, Jim and Dwight threw Kelly a conference room birthday party with the theme "Pillow or Television?" She got to choose whether she wanted to watch an hour of TV or take an hour nap. I genuinely believe that all offices should adopt this theme as policy.

Which would you pick? Vote in the EW.com poll after the jump. I’d go nap, but that could just be because I already have a TV in my office.

Kevinjameszookeepermovie_lKevin James scored with Paul Blart: Mall Cop, so we were eager to hear yesterday’s news that he’s signed on as the lead in a new big-screen comedy called The Zookeeper, about a lonely animal caretaker who excels at his job, but has trouble meeting girls. Jeez, it was only a few weeks ago that mall cop was the hot new career in Hollywood. Have they moved on so soon? Is Seth Rogen’s upcoming mall security comedy Observe and Report already behind the curve? Quick PopWatchers, how soon will it be until we hear about another wacky zookeeping comedy in the works? And which profession will James tackle next?

'Jimmy Kimmel Live': Here's a chart of Demetri Martin stealing the show

Categories: Television

In a night when such mega-watt stars like Marisa Tomei and Matthew McConaughey visited Jimmy Kimmel, you wouldn’t necessarily expect the up-and-coming comedian Demetri Martin to steal the show. But steal the show he did. Martin — looking quite dapper in what he said was only one of two suits he owns — was charming, self-deprecating, and above all, hilarious, especially when telling an anecdote about how he bombed so badly at a corporate comedy gig he literally heard crickets. The interview got me psyched to check out his new sketch-comedy show on Comedy Central, Important Things With Demetri Martin, which seems to be a runaway success in the ratings.

Elsewhere, Kimmel first invited Tomei to the stage, and she looked absolutely stunning in her short (and rather tight) white dress. Seriously, how great is Tomei? You need only watch this clip of Rourke’sacceptance speech at the BAFTA Awards to see how gracefully deals withpotentially awkward situations (right around the 1:40 mark). Butboy, did she deserve a better interview than Kimmel gave herlast night. Kimmelmostly just talked at her, explaining how the two grew up in adjoiningBrooklyn neighborhoods. But Tomei laughed andsmiled and was as radiant as ever, fielding questions about if she really did chug that beer in the movie (she didn’t, it was water) and whether she’s getting hit on by wrestlers.

Finally, McConaughey dropped by quickly to peddle his j.k. living t-shirts (stands for just keep livin’). Yes. ‘Nuff said.

Did anyone else catch Kimmel last night? And if so, were you alsodisappointed by how he monopolized the Tomei interview with anecdotes aboutBoboli pizza? And who else is jazzed about Demetri Martin and his newsketch-comedy show?

'Saturday Night Live' fashion: Do you want a nautical-themed pashmina afghan?

Andysambergonboat_lWe know you do, since one of you wrote into Style Hunter after the hilarious Saturday Night Live digital short "I’m on a Boat" aired to ask where you could get your very own anchor-adorned neck warmer. Well, our Style Hunters dutifully took up your cause, following the trail all the way back to Andy Samberg’s personal team. They were kind enough to inform us that, as it turns out, you can’t buy Andy’s nautical-themed pashmina afghan…but if you’re super-crafty, you could whip up your own. To make his key accessory, stylists Mila Gonzalez and Max Pierre bought a navy pashmina from $10 boutique Bijoux Terner and picked up the anchor patches from a costume shop, sewing them on only after Andy put on the pashmina so they’d be in exactly the right place for the shot. Really.

So now that we’ve impressed the sailor pants off of you, check out Style Hunter to see all the other cool things we track down for EW readers, and send in your where-can-I-find-that requests to stylehunter@ew.com. Just please don’t write us asking for the mermaid.

Anna Nicole Smith, the opera: Maybe not as crazy as it sounds

Annanicolesmith_lSo yesterday, The Guardian reported that London’s Royal Opera House is planning a 2011 production based on the life of Anna Nicole Smith. Richard Thomas, co-creator of Jerry Springer the Opera, is expected to create the libretto while Mark-Anthony Turnage writes the story of the young Texas girl who became a Playboy playmate, a reality star, and then a symbol of tragic excess after her death in 2007.  Elaine Padmore, the director of Covent Garden, where the opera will be staged, said, "It is a very sad story — a larger-than-life American story, as was Puccini’s Girl of the Golden West. It will be a slice of our times — of America in the pre-Obama days." It’s shrewd of her to compare Smith to a Puccini heroine, but she may have a point: Was there any celebrity more operatic than Anna Nicole Smith? What do you think PopWatchers: Genius? Totally exploitative? Both? And what other celebrity sagas would make for great opera?

Alec Baldwin's 'final' Conan O'Brien appearance: RIP, Generalissimo

Categories: 30 Rock, Television

With only seven episodes remaining before Conan moves to a new city (sigh) and a new time slot, guests are not wasting a precious moment. The endlessly funny Alec Baldwin made a memorable appearance with trailblazing late night host "Colin O’Ryan" Thursday evening. Even with a slight at Conan’s move ("You’re going to live in L.A.? You idiot") and a hotel hooker story, Baldwin is ridiculously endearing (although, next to Joaquin Phoenix, every late-night guest seems downright saintly this week.) See part 1 of his interview here:

Part 2 of the interview (embedded after the jump) was even better with a heartfelt shout-out to ex-wife Kim Basinger’s Oscar win (now that’s how you bounce back from an embarrassing public tape, Christian Bale) and makes late-night history by being the first guest "killed off" none other than by The Sopranos Tony Sirico. What did you think of the interview PopWatchers?  Are you watching every Conan episode before the big move? I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to watch him host SNL this weekend. Would you, like me, watch Alec Baldwin’s Love Bus in a heartbeat?

NAACP Image Awards: Winners list

Naacp_beyonce_dlA radiant Jennifer Hudson took home three trophies at last night’s 40th NAACP Image Awards, winning top honors for her album, as a "new artist," and in the duo, group or collaboration category. Fellow dreamgirl Beyonce won as best female artist, and Taraji P. Henson picked up an award for her Oscar-nominated role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Hosts Halle Berry and Tyler Perry — whose House of Payne won for best comedy, best actor in a comedy (LaVan Davis), best supporting actor in a comedy (Lance Gross), and best supporting actress in a comedy (Keshia Knight Pulliam) — kept the ceremony rolling, but the highlights were definitely the musical numbers. BeyoncĂ© (pictured) opened the show with "Halo," and Hudson’s stunning "Impossible Dream" had my jaw on the ground. This just in: She’s a really good singer.

More winners after the jump..
