'The Chris Isaak Hour': Another must-see late-night talk show?

Isaak_showDid anyone else catch Chris Isaak’s return to television last night? The singer-actor-personality debuted The Chris Isaak Hour on the Biography Channel, which is essentially his own version of Spectacle: Elvis Costello With… For his inaugural show, Isaak welcomed country star Trisha Yearwood. Now, I have to be honest: I wasn’t particularly enthused about the show beforehand, and that can mostly be attributed to talk show fatigue. With Jimmy Fallon joining the late night fray on Monday, it feels a bit crowded in TV land these days.

But I found myself really charmed by The Chris Isaak Hour, and that’s mostly because of Isaak himself. He has a sort of affable, goofy sincerity, and is not one to shy away from self-deprecating humor, which is of course why he’s perfect for a show like this. It helps that he seems to have an easy rapport with Yearwood. In return, Yearwood was surprisingly candid in retracing her steps to stardom — from tour guiding at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, meeting her future husband Garth Brooks for the first time, to joking how she pretty much gave Matthew McConaughey his career with a guest spot in her "Walkaway Joe" video. (Isaak astutely pointed out that McConaughey was, of course, shirtless at one point in the video.)

Spliced in between the interview were five performances: A couple of duets between Isaak and Yearwood (including "Breaking Apart," off Isaak’s just-released Mr. Lucky album), and solo renditions of songs like "Cowboys Are My Weakness." All in all, a solid hour of television (if a bit awkward in spots). With guests like Stevie Nicks, Michael Buble, and Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens) forthcoming, I will definitely be tuning in again (the show will air weekly, Thursdays at 10 p.m.). What about you, PopWatchers? Who was digging the offbeat charm of Mr. Isaak? And did anyone else find it funny that Yearwood gave McConaughey one of his first big breaks?

Kanye West's 'Storytellers': Did he really rant about Chris Brown, Thom Yorke, and O.J. Simpson?

Kanyeweststoryteller_lKanye West is nothing if not a man of strong opinions, so it’s not too huge a shock to hear (via a Reuters report) that he might have shared some controversial thoughts with the studio audience while taping his episode of VH1′s Storytellers, which airs tomorrow night. According to Reuters, Kanye lashed out at Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke for somehow snubbing him backstage at the Grammys, which raises the question of whether Kanye has ever seen an interview with Thom. (Blindingly awesome creative genius, yes; enthusiastic green-room schmoozer, possibly not.) Reuters also says that Kanye went on a tirade against those who are quick to judge Michael Phelps (word) — as well as defending Chris Brown, Michael Jackson, and O.J. Simpson. "Can’t we give Chris a break?… O.J. Simpson, amazing. Is he not? What he did, when he did, what he did. Was he not amazing though?" Uh, no comment on that one, Yeezy.

Reuters says many of these remarks got cut from the final VH1 broadcast, so it’ll be hard for anyone to tell whether those quotes made more sense in context. (VH1 has issued a statement saying that "Every show/concert performance that’s taped for television goes through an editing process and this episode of Storytellers is not unique to that"; Kanye’s reps haven’t replied to my e-mail asking for comment on this.) So given that all this should probably be taken with a grain of salt, what do you think? Does this make you more or less interested in watching Kanye’s Storytellers? And if you do watch it, what do you think are the chances that you’ll ignore whatever he says in between songs and end up saying, "Was he not amazing though?"

'Sita Sings the Blues' now online

Sita

Joy! Sita Sings the Blues is streaming, free, online!

The indie animated sensation blends ’20s jazz music from Annette Hanshaw, the writer/director/animator Nina Paley’s autobiographical story of divorce, and the complicated saga of Sita and Rama from the Ramayana. It’s a brisk 82 minutes, covering everything from a monkeyman army to getting dumped by e-mail, and the inventively stylish animation manages to be both evocative and lovely.

Sita Sings the Blues has been a festival darling, but the licensing fees for Hanshaw’s music have been prohibitively expensive, essentially ruining the film’s chance of distribution. But copyright law is a many-headed beast, so public television stations can air the film without violating it — which is how Sita is going to find its widest audience, starting with New York–area airings next month.

Whatever the eyeball equivalent of "nom nom nom" is pretty much sums up how I feel about this movie. I was ensorcelled.

'Damn Yankees': Who should play Lola in the new movie?

Tags: , Movies

Damnyankeescasting_lJim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal have signed on to star in a new adaptation of Damn Yankees, with Carrey playing the devil, Mr. Applegate, and Gyllenhaal playing Joe Boyd, the devoted Washington Senators fan who sells his soul to become Joe Hardy, the slugger the Senators need to win the World Series. Yet to be cast: the devil’s handmaiden and song-and-dance sexpot Lola. As in "whatever Lola wants, Lola gets." And little man, little Lola is who?

You guys, duh: Cast Scarlett Johansson. She’s far and away my first pick, but I could get on board for Beyonce, too. (Other PWHQ folk have suggested Anne Hathaway, but I just don’t get a "devilish seductress" vibe from her. Maybe I’ve seen The Princess Diaries too much.) Evan Rachel Wood definitely rocks a smoky sexuality, but she strikes me as a little too young for the role.

What say you, fair PopWatchers? Who would you sell your soul to see cast as Lola? And how about Meg, Joe’s put-upon wife?

'Blame It': Jamie Foxx parties with Jake Gyllenhaal, Ron Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, and more

Jamie Foxx has been working that actor-singer synergy for years, but no way was I prepared for the kind of Hollywood favors he called in for his new music video. The song’s called "Blame It" — short for "blame it on the alcohol" — and it features guest vocals from jack-of-all-hooks T-Pain, who is perhaps the seventh or eighth most famous person who appears in this clip. Check it out below to witness Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Samuel L. Jackson, Ron Howard, and other random luminaries sipping expensive champagne in the club with Mr. Foxx and Mr. Pain. Wait…Ron Howard?! Yup. Apparently this is what he does in his spare time between directing thinking person’s popcorn flicks. (I’m also going to go ahead and assume that that’s old Opie getting down in the panda costume at 1:50 and later.)

"Blame It" is a catchy tune, and the visuals here are pretty cool, too, thanks to auteur Hype Williams. But this video is all about the stunt casting, which is just wonderful. In the clip below, you’ll see BET host Terrence J saying how much he wishes he could have been at this party. Me too, Terrence, me too. Anyone else in awe?

'Hell's Kitchen' recap: We've got spirit! Yes we do?

Hellskitchen_lTonight’s Hell’s Kitchen was momentous for several reasons: Colleen reached new and astronomical levels of annoying, Ramsay showed some sweetness, we found out that Carol wears fake hair in the kitchen (okay, not so much momentous as perplexing), and someone who actually deserved the boot got it. Was this the “most controversial episode” last week’s promos promised? Um, no. The commercials mentioned the word “Sabotage!!! Sabotage!!” more than the Beastie Boys — and yet no real sabotage occurred. False advertising! In fact, the episode could be summed up with two words: everyone sucked. End of recap.

Paula Abdul and Kara DioGuardi 'get along great'...Really!

Dioguardiabdul_lIt’s the darndest thing. Looks like American Idol judge Paula Abdul believes she was taken out of context in an interview in OK! Magazine, which quotes her as saying she doesn’t think adding fourth judge Kara DioGuardi was such a hot idea. (Random thought: Who was the first famous person to ever claim their quote was "taken out of context?") DioGuardi responded to the OK! article by telling Access Hollywood that "Paula has a right to her opinions, but I was disappointed by her comments." (Another random thought: Why is it always "disappointed?" Why can’t it ever be "pissed?") And now, in this saga’s latest installment, Abdul told Entertainment Tonight that no, actually, OK! got her wrong. She was referring to previous guest judges, NOT DioGuardi.

Here’s what OK! has on its website from the interview in question:

OK! MAGAZINE: What do you think about Kara DioGuardi coming in as a judge?
ABDUL:
Karaand I have known each other for years and we get along great. But wetried four judges before and it doesn’t work. It takes up so much timefor each of us to give our opinion that it slows down the pace.

So, do you think OK! may have taken Abdul out of context? Or was she just being passive-aggressive Paula? Take our poll and let us know what you think in the comments below.
