Late last night, I learned that director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) has been hired by Universal to direct and produce a live-action movie based on the Hasbro board game Clue. I immediately IM’d my editor Nicholas Fonseca — a fellow die-hard devotee of the 1985 live-action movie based on Clue – the link to the news story with just this message: "!!!"
Nicholas’ response: "I know. I can’t. It’s blasphemy." Here’s but one example that will hopefully illuminate why:
You could scarcely ask for a better script — Professor Plum: "What are you afraid of, a fate worse than death?" Mrs. Peacock: "No, just death, isn’t that enough?" — or a more talented cast. But even if you (inexplicably) think this film of dubious quality, or have absolutely no idea what I’m even talking about, I think we can all agree on this: There is absolutely no need for another movie based on the Hasbro board game Clue. (We already have this upcoming movie based on the Hasbro board game Candy Land to wrap our minds around.) Ironically, we kinda predicted this would happen, exactly a year ago this week, requesting that if there must be a second Clue movie, that at least the Christopher Guest acting troupe be the ones to take it on. Alas, it looks now like this is not to be.
So Popwatchers, who would you cast in this utterly unnecessary movie as Prof. Plum, Ms. Scarlett, Mr. Green, Mrs. White, Col. Mustard, and Mrs. Peacock?

I dont care how bad the script or casting was in the old film…it’s still an untouchable classic in my eyes.
I agree! I love the original Clue! Sometimes movies, even fun, fluffy ones like Clue (especially ones that are quotable), should just not be touched. What’s next? A remake of “The Princess Bride?”
No one can outdo that fantastic cast. It’s a classic. “I, am, your singing telegram!”
This is a terrible, TERRIBLE idea. The original Clue movie is hysterical and vastly underrated. It definitely does not need a remake. I quote this movie all the time, and while most people don’t get the references, the one’s who do REALLY get it.
“One plus two plus one plus one.”
“Even if you are right, it would be one plus one plus TWO plus one, not one plus two plus one plus one.”
This has to be the worst ideas ever in the history of remakes.
This is ridiculous. I refuse to believe this is happening. There will never be another Clue!!
this makes me sooo angry …it-it- the f – it -flam – flames. Flames, on the side of my face, breathing-breathl- heaving breaths. Heaving breath…
I’m probably in the minority, but I think “Clue” is an absolutely terrible movie. The only funny thing is the Singing Telegram girl. What a waste of very talented people. A new version can’t help but be better.
I thought I’d never hear a worse idea for an unnecessary remake of an 80’s film than the new Karate Kid with Jaden Smith, but this one…
Well, the Karate Kid remake is still worse, but this comes pretty damn close.
Wow. A horrible idea.
However, if they HAVE to do it (and without the Christopher Guest players), might I suggest heavily using/stealing from the cast of Arrested Development (who are making their OWN movie – YAY!)? I’d love to see Jessica Walters as Mrs. White (or Ms. Peacock)….David Cross could pull off Professor Plum…Jeffrey Tambor as Col. Mustard…Portia de Rossi as Ms. Scarlett…Jason Bateman as Mr. Green (the “straight” man)…and Wil Arnett as the Butler?
Love “Clue!” No need to remake!! If you have never seen it, go enjoy a classic! “Let us in, let us in!….Let us out, Let us out!” “I am going home to sleep with my wife!”
Say it ain’t so! Clue is a classic. If they mess with it, then I hope it bombs at the box office.
This is easily one of my favorite movies and have watched it countless amounts of times. But I for one would be happy to see a new flick. I doubt Verbinski will take on a similar tone in this one. And certainly Christopher Guest’s group could throw some awesome talent in the mix if they did get on, but I think we won’t see a script like that of the ‘85 classic, I know this doesn’t always hold true, but if we know that, shouldn’t Hollywood?
Why? WHY????
when the first one is a masterpiece!!!
The fact that they are redoing one of my favorite movies throughly disgusts me…I mean really…can Hollywood come up with something ORIGINAL for once. I am tired of the remakes. Clue is classic and one of the funniest movies I have every seen. DO NOT REMAKE IT.
How dare they even consider remaking Clue!!! The movie gets funnier every time I watch it…”Mrs. Peacock was a man!?”
@Chaddogg – I would go see that movie.
No matter how many movies are ever made based on the “Clue” concept, I loved the first one so much that I’d be willing to see each one at least once. What can I say… I love a mystery! That said, the Gore Verbinski movie definitely shouldn’t be a remake. The last thing I want to see is Steve Carrell running around a mansion doing his best Tim Curry impression–or worse, any actress attempting to duplicate Madeline Kahn’s genius in the role of Mrs. White. The question is, can a movie based on a board game become a believable suspense/thriller/high-minded mystery? I certainly think it would be interesting to see them try. Then again, a new comedy version (like with the Christopher Guest acting troupe) would probably be hilarious, just as long as it has a completely different script.
Um, there is no need to have another Clue movie. None. The first one is so freaking funny, why, why, why.
Chaddog, that would be a funny movie.
That clip alone has made me just now order the DVD. I’ve never seen it! Sounds like something i would love!
This is a very bad idea, but if they must, I’d like to see Jennifer Coolidge and Megan Mullally in it.
To make a long story short. “too late”
Bad idea to remake it. Is it really hard to write an original script anymore in Hollywood
As horrified as I am to hear they’re remaking ‘Clue,’ it’s nothing to how I feel about making a movie out of ‘Candy Land,’ which is possibly the most coma-inducing game (for grown-ups, at least) ever. Why, why, why?!?
That clip is the funniest part of the whole freakin’ movie. Bad idea to do a remake.
This is definately one of my favorite movies. Making another Clue movie would be like remaking the original “Airplane” movie. It’s just something that you DON’T do.
Ugh. And Gore Verbinsky, of all hacks. What, they couldn’t get John Woo or Brett Ratner?? They always have to muck with the classics, just like that silly Willy Wonka remake. At least that one was from Tim Burton. UGH!!
Agree that a remake is completely unnecessary, and changing the script is an awful idea.
That said, if someone were to do a same-script remake just for kicks (maybe on stage?), I would put forward the following suggestions for cast members:
Wadsworth – Hugh Lauire
Professor Plum – Jim Broadbent
Col Mustard – Robert DeNiro
Mrs White – Natalie Portman
Mrs Peacock – Meryl Streep
Typo, obviously – Hugh Laurie, not Hugh Lauire.
CLUE is a classic!!!
“I’m the butler.”
“What exactly do you do?”
“I buttle.”
“I’m a plant.” “I thought people in your case were called a fruit.” Bad idea to remake this movie, but the people that have been suggested could make for funny combinations. Megan Mullay as Mrs. White, Meryl Streep as Mrs. Peacock, but Christpoher Lloyd would have to come back as Professor Plum. He could still play that role at his age and make it seem credible.
