'America's Next Top Model' makes a tall order: shorter contestants

Evatopmodel_lTake heart, oh ye of tiny stature! America’s Next Top Model is casting its 13th cycle, and they want shorties. Indeed, according to this season’s application, "You must be AT OR UNDER five feet and seven inches (5′7") in height, although Producers reserve the right to make case-by-case exceptions. Please note the change in this requirement from past cycles of the Series." Oh, it’s noted, ANTM. The CW also wants would-be contestants to know that producers can make case-by-case exceptions, which they must have done for cycle 3 winner Eva Pigford, who you can fit in your pocket at a wee 5′6”.

ANTM’s relationship to actual modeling has grown ever-more tenuous, but that’s not really much of a complaint; no one really believes the show is a modeling contest, do they? It’s a contest to become famous, and you don’t have to be particularly tall to get on that ride. We’re expecting a lot of references to Kate Moss (she’s 5′7”!) — and constant reminders that Tyra Banks is attempting to change the beauty paradigm! That she’s doing something new! That her models are changing the face of beauty! Etc., etc., etc., except it’s not true, etc., etc.

Anyway, I think my favorite questions from the application are Nos. 31, 31a, and 32, which are: (31) "Do you drink alcohol? If so, how often do you drink and how much?" (31a) "How often do you get drunk? How do you act when you get drunk?" (32) "What are your thoughts on religion?" Fierce!

“That her models are changing the face of beauty! Etc., etc., etc., except it’s not true, etc., etc.”
That made my afternoon – I love it!
Perhaps what they’re gearing up for is a Snow White type of Cycle 13, where one contestant is a towering 6′2″, and everyone else is half a head shorter. That would bring DRAMA and CONFLICT, if you ask me.
Or, it might bring 10 minutes’ worth of drama and conflict that the producers can then streeeeetch out into 2-3 episodes’ worth.

betsybug – Please work in reality tv. I would pay actual money to see that. I’m just picturing how Tyra would present that to the other girls and I am dying laughing.

  • Kevin

Wow. Sounds like the makings of the lamest season ever.

  • confidential

ANTM has nothing to do with actually fashion modeling or the industry. What it is, is a reality show and a dumb one at that.

Best question on the application: Have you ever had a restraining order issued against you?

  • C

Uh, am I the only one who noticed that 57″ is /not/ 5 feet 7 inches? That would be 67″. 57″ is 4 feet 9. That’s gonna be one short crop of wannabe models.

  • C

Never mind. It only looked like 57″ on my monitor. Ignore me!

  • Ashley

I think that cycle 13 is sure to bring some excitement and drama. I personally can’t wait to see the girls they end up with. Here is a little more about what I think about the upcoming cycle!

It’s a bit gimmicky, but at least girls of a regular height have a shot now. I think they should do a season with male models- switch it up… eh, who am I kidding?

  • Lisa

wow. best question on there: have you ever been to a nude beach and if so what was it like?

  • Nancy Rivera

How pathetic. Models are known for their beauty and height. 5′7″? Tiny models? Come on!!!! Good luck who wins getting any recogition. As a retired model at 5′11″, if I had been any shorter, the jobs would not have been there. 5′7″? Just too short. Maybe 5′10″. Tyra, what are you thinking!!!

  • Theresa

people can say what they want but beauty isn’t defined by how tall you are. who says you have to be 5′8 to work a runway?..good things come in small packages just remember that

  • Ashley Smith

Short people look way better than tall people. I mean the tall models take over the entire picture with their weird looking legs and nasty arms. Why NOT HAVE SOMEONE THAT LOOKS NORMAL for once. People are so weird and if you think that tall models are beautiful than you need your eyes checked. Thats why designers love tall models bc they cant take the attention away from clothe. Because they are ugly. How many tall models is there and how many of them does the world know?? and how many short models is there basically 2 and the whole world knows them.

  • kristen

Ashley Smith is the dumbest person I’ve never met in my life.

  • Erica

Please tell me these two short models that are under 5′7 because I must have missed that in fashion school. This is going to be as successful as getting fat girls to model.

  • Kat

I think it’s a great idea. The modeling industry has very strict expectations on height and size so it’s finally a break for girls who don’t have a height advantage. Who says you have to be 6′0 tall to Bring It!

  • Kewi

I say forget about height, if they are beautiful, & have what it takes, let them in. No matter how tall they are.

Ashley smith, you crack me up. obviously you do not know much about the modeling industry, there are more than one type of model, print, catelog, and RUNWAY. runway is where you NEED to be tall. There is no need for out of the ordenary height if you want to be in print, although it is very beneficial because as we all know the camera adds ten lbs and its nice to have an extra few inches to ofset the instant weight gain. I’m sorry that your probably short and struggled to reach the top shelf your entire life, but being 5′9″ and 127 lbs (and perfectly healthy) and making more in one fashion show than you have probably made in weeks is not something to get upset over. I dont have anything against what they are doing for this season, I think it will be a good opportunity for the girls with amaizing bone structure and personality, but just lack the height but im sure this season is going to go in a very different direction than past seasons but we will all just have to watch and see

  • Dara

Good! Most women aren’t over 5′7″ anyway. At least not that I’ve seen. I’m one of the “tall” ones at 5′5″.

  • anna

all u have to remember that people dont choose how tall they are or what they look like… and who ever said models had to be tall? its discriminating to short people and guess what there giving people a shot and good for them there showing girls and women that u dont have to be tall to be a model… so all u discriminating shut ur mouth do u know what it feels like to be short and not being able to have he chance… they want people to relize it doesnt matter how tall u are or how short u can always be a model

  • Yana

I also happen to think its a wonderful idea. It’s disturbing that some people are deeming this concept to fail even before its started??! Who says a model should be over 5ft 7?? There are plenty of beautiful women out there who are shorter. Does this mean just because they lack height – they should be dismissed? I mean one winner was plus size! Who would have expected a plus size model to win!? So its all about change – so what’s wrong with keeping it fresh and being open minded about it?

  • Erics

Whitney is a size 6-8. That’s not plus size, not to mention the weight she’s lost since. Toccara was the only one and the only place she went after ANTM was celebrity fit club. womp womp.

  • Unknown

Erics u obviously don’t know what you’re talking about because Tocarra actually has made a name for her self! She’s co-hosted on many shows on B.E.T and was also one of the few african american models featured in the 1st Black Vogue Edition! Know your information before you try to downplay someones career! K

  • Yana

Well Whitney was considered plus size by ANTM’s standards! She was bigger than the other contestants was she not?? So there you go then.

  • Michelle walker

Lol…..well to the comment of not discriminating short people…or fat people……Don’t we all discriminate against ugly people on a daily basis..? Bring back 5′7 and taller….Lets be serious….How elegant or appealing does a super long gown look on someone shorter than 5′7….it looks nice but doesn’t make me wanna buy it…..how bout just having people audition with no specific size in question…

  • ashley

Michael- short people can look just as elegant in a long dress… they do come in diffrent sizes so yea. i mean i have modeled long dresses before and im only 5′4 so i say height doesnt matter.
for everyone else- if ur pretty enought to model or should i say if u have the look to model then it shouldnt matter ur height if u can show the skills who cares if ur 6′0 or 5′0

  • meranda

Why the hell do designers hire models at 5′10?because people would want to buy the clothes even more if a beautiful woman is wearing it rather than an average (short)woman. Taller women are harder to come by!!!!!more short women are gonna show up this season just because there are more out there!where can you find a tall, beautiful woman?????VOGUE………

  • Amanda Miller

This is absurd!!! Why are tall girls being penalized?? Sure those taller that 5′7″ can be evaluated on a case by case basis, but this does not make things equal. I am 5′9″, and I love being tall, although it’s not always a prized characteristic. I am part of the minority(tall girls),I don’t believe that there should be a height requirement. It seems to me, as though we shouldn’t be glorifying the already glorified (the short frail petite girls, whom our society views as the valued social norm for women…
Tyra may be trying to change the image of modeling, but is she changing it the right way?? Yes she’s changing the height requirements, but that’s what they are requirements, once again oppressing us to fit into a certain box. Should we be continuing the oppression of women through these requirements? Why should someone that is 3 feet tall be allowed in this competition but not someone 6 feet tall??

  • Gina

All of this reminds me of going to an amusement park. Too tall to get on this ride, to short to go on that one. LOL Its crazy, why not just include everyone? What makes a Top Model is her heart and attitude for an industry and for people regardless of height.
