As with the other comments people have written, Danny Boyle deserved the Best Director award. Slumdog Millionaire may not have been the best picture, but Danny Boyle has always been one of my personal favorite directors. No one can deny the fact that every picture he has made has been unique and fascinating. Well done Academy…for once.
and Millions is also my personal favorite Boyle film. Simply amazing.
I would love to see Danny Boyle apply his direction to the musical genre. May I suggest he tackle the movie version of Broadway’s Wicked. The play is missing some of the dark satire that the book on which it is based contained. I think he may be just the guy to turn it into a film masterwork.
Ironic that Danny Boyle won for one of his lesser efforts. He wouldn’t be the first one tho. Scorcese FINALLY won for “The Departed” which, similarly to “Slumdog” was a very good solid effort but paled in comparison to Mr. Scorcese’s earlier films. Here’s hoping David Fincher eventually gets his due. He was completely robbed…but over “Zodiac”. I really didn’t like “Benjamin Button”, sorry.
28 DAYS LATER is his best film
I know the popular answer is Trainspotting, which was a good movie. But if you have not seen Shallow Grave (one of his very first movies), you must go rent it now, put it in your Netflix queue or borrow it from a friend. Simply a great movie with great actors and a storyline with a great twist!
Sean, I hope you’re wrong. Musicals are by far the worst film genre ever. I’d rather see Madea Goes To Jail than have to sit through a film where they break into choreographed song and dance. It’s stupid.
Sean, I’m pretty sure A Life Less Ordinary was a musical…or at least had musical leanings.
Always thought he was a good and interesting director but definitely never thought he’d win an oscar. My top 3 are Trainspotting and then Slumdog Millionaire and 28 days later tied for second.
It’s a tie between Shallow Grave and Sunshine for my favorite Danny Boyle movie. Honestly, I’d see just about anything he directs, but I hope he shows more descretion with his choice of any “big budget” projects. He’s at his best when working outside of the mainstream.
By “respect,” hopefully that means we can look forward to studios more rigorously marketing and releasing Danny Boyle’s films. When “Sunshine” was coming out, I desperately wanted to see it but 1) couldn’t find any friends who had heard of it and 2) there weren’t any theaters nearby (and I live in Los Angeles!) that were showing the film. I rented it eventually and it has become one of my favorite movies of all time, and hopefully Danny Boyle can get a little more respect in the future.
Diane, I’d have to agree with you about Sunshine. I think it is his best film.
There is actually a controversy over the movie in Mumbai. I saw this video today that talks a little bit about that as well as what journalists predicted for the oscars…

how about a musical next? I heard they are looking for a director for the film version of Jersey Boys.
I can’t beleive slumdog won anything. I don’t think its all that good. It’s boring and does not hold my attention. They have a whole lot of movies that are better than slumdog that should have won. The only thing I can see it winning is first place for the garbage can.
If you all think slumdog was a good movie, well you should have seen a truly good movie about a dog, because you can really feed slumdog to the dog and gave Milo and Me an award ,beacause at least it was about a dog that made you laugh and cry
