'Watchmen': Jeffrey Dean Morgan rides the wave into 'Losers'-ville

Watchmen_dlIt seems to me that with the news coming down that Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who tears it up as the Comedian in Watchmen, is negotiating to star in The Losers — a Warner Bros. flick, to be directed by Sylvain White, based on Andy Diggle and Jock’s thoroughly awesome espionage-revenge DC/Vertigo comic — there is a right way and a wrong way to use the Zack Snyder bump.

The wrong way goes as follows: Be Gerard Butler. Star in one of 2007′s biggest hits (that’d be 300). Realize that the audience loves you as an action star who could also, possibly, act. And then, instead of giving the people what they want, you follow a blockbuster Greco-smackdown with…Nim’s Island, a tepid kid flick? And P.S. I Love You, an even more tepid rom-com? (Yes, we’ll give the Butler some credit for RocknRolla, but…ye gods, have you seen P.S. I Love You?)

Or, perhaps, you could be Morgan — who we’re fully aware was also in P.S. I Kinda Stink, but he wasn’t the star and that was pre-Snyder bump, when a brother needs to get paid — and begin the next stage in your career by setting your sights on the Coolness.

What do you think? Has Butler squandered his cred currency? Is Morgan making the right moves? Is P.S. I’m Abysmal your favorite movie ever and did I just make an enemy for life?

Gerard Butler is gorgeous. Gorgeous goes a long way. PS I Love You was quite the stinker, but Gerard was beautiful in it. I could have watched it with the sound off and enjoyed it just as much. (Let’s face it, his Irish accent was atrocious).
I have a feeling he won’t be wanting for roles. They may not be going to win him Oscars, but he’ll get work. He’s one of those guys that girls want to bed and men want to drink with.
The good thing about him is that he’s proven (how successfully depends on your point of view) that he can take on different types of roles..musicals, tender dramas, action flicks, ensemble pieces…he’ll be ok.

  • Am I Wrong?

Um…I’m pretty sure Gerard Butler IS Irish.

  • Em

    Gerard Butler is Scottish.

  • P.S. I need a drink

Butler is an Irish name, but dude is a Scot.
P.S. I love you was ten kinds of awful.
I agree that Jeffrey Dean Morgan is making hay while the sun shines–which is smart.
Butler probably made the other flicks while “300″ was gaining momentum, so you can’t fault the brotha for wanting to work.
If you look at his credits, he’s all over the board. Usually walking away unscathed from crappy films.
JDM has a bit more charisma but I think they’re pretty much racing w/even odds.

“…Is P.S. I’m Abysmal your favorite movie ever and did I just make an enemy for life?”
Abymsmal? 10 kinds of awful? Stinks? Why SO harsh guys? It’s a sweet, light hearted rom-com. Not EVERY movie has to be The Godfather, Straw Dogs or Pulp Fiction.

I am a girl who loves romantic comedies and will find something to like in most of them…but thought PS I LOVE YOU was one of the worst movies I’d ever seen. Really though I blame Hilary Swank–there’s someone who should never be allowed to do a romantic comedy…or just anything resembling a comedy…ever again.

Butler is Scottish, born in Glascow.

PS I Love You was not abysmal but barely watchable. Gerard, you get a one time pass for that one. Now, do more rocknrolla stuff and you’ll never need another pass. JDM, you are so dreamy I even manage to stop the vomit while watching the whole dreadful Denny/Izzie ghost sex storyline.

    G. Butler has said his family is of Irish descent, but he was born and grew up in Glasgow, Scotland. People have moved about in the British Isles as they do elsewhere. We all have different tastes in movies. Where is the offense in expressing one’s opinion about a film?

Gerard Butler filmed PS I Love you before “300″ was released. He did “RocknRolla” before he filmed “Nim’s Island” and he signed and filmed the action film GAME from the directors of Crank which is to be released on 9/4/09. He is presently producing and staring in a thriller called “Law Abiding Citizen” with Jamie Fox. So I think he is doing great.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan will have a romantic comedy released on March 27th, called “Accidental Husband”. The film will be in the theaters at same time as WATCHMEN. So, it looks like he is following the WATCHMEN bump exactly the same way Gerard Butler did.

Gerard Butler can act in quite a few different genres. One of his best roles was in “The Jury”, a British miniseries which was excellent. He was also sterling in “Dear Frankie”. Contrary to the board opinions, my friend and I loved “P.S. I Love You” and especially “The Phantom of the Opera” and not just for Gerry B.

Gerard Butler is Scottish. He just played an Irishman in P.S. You’re So Damn Sexy I Don’t Care If You Can Act.
And JDM is finally getting the type of roles he deserves. Accidental Husband sucks btw, but it was filmed way before Watchmen so it don’t count.

Good actors don’t want to be in the same type of movies over and over. You know, Gerard was in quite a few before 300 and some of those were action or warrior type roles. He was fabulous in “The Phantom of the Opera” but a lot of critics unnecessarily panned it. Gerard, who is Scottish, has said many times he would be bored doing the same roles over and over – he likes to mix it up. He’s filming now and has many films on board for the future. Any actor would love to have his career. EW, you sure love to stir up the pot and most of the time you are way off base when it comes to actors and movies!

There was an advanced screening of Watchmen this past week.Reviews were,to put it gently, underwhelming.
