I’m a brazilian journalist, and I’m writing an article about the closing of Virgin Megastore in Times Square. I would like do ask a few questions to a new yorker that loves the store. Can anyone contact me? My email is rafaeldemeloteixeira@gmail.com
I loved the Virgin Megastore, it’s like a pop culture supermarket, there was so much more to it than just CD’s. Books, games, clothes, you could spend hours browsing – and butying too.
And yes, you can get CD’s cheaper at Target, but Target is not going to have the depth of catalog that Virgin had.
Forever 21′s clothes are sleazy junk and I hope opening in that location fails tremendously.
I don’t know how I missed this bit of news… my wife and I live in the Bronx and just last night we were in the city and decided to trek over to Virgin… of course only to find a shadow of blacked-out glass where Virgin use to be. It was shocking to me simply for the great landmark this has always been for us. My wife was almost in tears because it was so sad and depressing… like loosing a friend. I too rarely bought CDs from Virgin, but the selection was so huge that if you find that rare import or relatively unknown band’s CD that you just couldn’t find anywhere else, it was well worth the inflated pricetag. There were many hidden gems inside that store. And most folks forget about one thing a digital download can’t provide… creative box art and cover designs. Any TOOL fan can attest to this… 10,000 Days had one of the most creative designs for album art ever… a download just can’t do what that cover did.
