New 'Transformers' trailer: A Maeby Funke production?

Take a look at the new trailer for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Admittedly, most of the money shots here (like a Decepticon tearing through a highway overpass) were already in the trailer that played during the Super Bowl. And while I’m usually partial to any film with “Revenge” in the title, I’ve got to say, the first few images made me think Maeby Fünke had finally produced Armageddon 2: Armageddon. Falling meteorites — probably robots — crash into (and around!) global landmarks. Of course, this is the Michael Bay school of storytelling, which insists that any fireball explosion is more exciting if we have a shot of the Eiffel Tower in the background. Better yet, the pyramids at Giza! Okay, maybe it makes sense that evil Decepticons would attack an air force carrier (loving long shots of military hardware are a Bay must), but why would they need to crash by the pyramids? What possible strategic function could the pyramids hold for a bunch of space-born robots? Or could Revenge of the Fallen go all Stargate on us?

I, for one, tired of Optimus Prime’s preachiness in the first movie, so thankfully we are spared much robot-speak here. And yet sadly, this preview lacks the non-verbal wit and irony of the Fast & Furious trailer that played before Quantum of Solace last November. What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you primed for another bot-on-bot deathmatch this summer? Or like me, do you resent that Transformers is a movie franchise and Hungry Hungry Hippos is not?

This movie, like its predecessor, will be a “fast-forward to the action scenes” movie once its out on DVD. I guess it’s like porn without the sex.

I think that I could go for a Hungry Hungry Hippos franchise. But only if Mouse Trap is finally made into the next Saw movie.

Umm… the Air Force doesn’t have carriers genius.

The first movie was horrendous, so I can’t really understand why anyone would want to see this. Even the giant robot battles lacked a sense of fun.

Visually, there’s just too much going on — a problem I had with the first movie. The robots have so many moving parts, it distracts your eye and you miss the main thrust of whatever action is going on. Also, I hate the “personalities” they gave the robots. It may play in a cartoon, but in live action/CGI it’s just… cheesy. And I say this as a sci-fi buff.

I just want to put out there that I love Maeby and if the only thing that is holding out her movie is Micheal Cera than beware!

    happy birthday, michael bay!

I never really liked the first Transformers, but I will try to give this one a chance. Shia LaBeouf makes the movie worth watching. He’s such a talented actor.

For some reason the editing reminds me of Friday the 13th. Hope they release a better trailer.

Ok, I guess I’m in the minority here, but I love the trailer, think it is awesome. I loved the first film, thought it was awesome. It’s like Richard Roeper stated, these movies are not meant to win Oscars for best storyline and what locations make sense. They are supposed to wow us with special effects. Job done!!

my guess about ‘why the pyramids’… they were designed to last thousands of years. If someone were to hide something and want to find it again in a different millenia, that’d be the place to do it. I just hope to god that they don’t ruin it by saying that alien space robots built them

Wow; this movie made $300 mil+ domestically and over $700 mil worldwide yet, so far, everyone on here is bashing it. I’m stoked for this movie! I grew up watching the original cartoon series and loved the 1st movie. More Megan Fox, Autobots vs Decepticons; what more could anyone want? Oh, and Dwight K. Schrute too!!

    I absolutely agree with Heather.
I know it’s trendy to bash Michael Bay (it’s almost as trendy as it is to bash Brett Ratner), but the one thing the guy does well is big, loud, over-the-top action movies with great special effects, which is exactly what I expect out of a “Transformers” movie.
Of course, when all is said and done, I might end up enjoying this trailer more than the movie. After all, the trailer doesn’t have the painful dialogue the movie is sure to have and the signature Bay military sequences are kept to a minimum here.
However, based on this trailer alone, it looks like this movie is going to be a rocking good time in theatres, just like the first one was for me and my dad (by the way, I was 24 and he was 54 when we watched it together and had a blast).
He’s not out to make thoughtful dramas, Bay’s just here to make thing “Awesome”, which is what this trailer is.

    Jay-
You’re absolutely right about the editing in the trailer. It’s just like the trailer for the new Friday the 13th…which was just like the trailer for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. Not a coincidence since they were both produced by Michael Bay.

I loved the first movie, and I’m definitely looking forward to the sequel…even though it looks a litte…”Cornball” But the best part of this article was the Arrested Development reference.
