'American Idol': What do you think of the top 36?

How’s this for exciting? We now know that the next American Idol will come from a pool of 36 people who were named tonight as season 8 semifinalists by Paula, Kara, Simon, and Randy. Well, hopefully that’s exciting. I’m about to plunk down on the couch myself, fire up the DVR, and pray that at least a third of the judges’ picks have exhibited talents beyond shedding tears, praising their own performances, and wearing atroshe headband-shiny shirt combos. Check back around 6 a.m. for my full TV Watch recap; until then, enjoy the latest Idolatry episode (featuring Porky Pig!), then head to the comments section and start sounding off on who you think will assume David Cook’s crown. [UPDATE: Check out our breaking news story: Joanna Pacitti out of ‘American Idol,’ Felicia Barton in.]

Okay, the way things will work for the next three weeks is:
12 will perform. The nine with the least amount of votes will go home.
That will leave a Top 9.
The judges will do their Wild Card round, bringing back 3 which will fill out the Top 12.
These contestants will have ONE chance, and one chance only to prove themselves. Those who do not already have fan bases will have to work twice as hard and be twice as good just to get noticed.
Which is a shame when Norman, Tatianna and Matt were dropped in, as they certainly aren’t going to win but because of their popularity will eclipse three others who MAY have gotten in because of thier talent.
    Not Good.

Will the voting public like Tatiana? I really hope not. I sure as hell don’t. Actually, is there anybody out there who likes her at all?

  • Varsity Basketweaving

Yeah, this new format is terrible. I fear Anoop Dogg won’t survive the first round because of it. Go Anoop!

  • Eric

This is the Season on Vote for the Worst. So many annoyingly bad singers got though to the top 36.

Really? Tatiana, really? I was only half-paying attention, but I could have sworn that Ryan’s voiceover said she impressed them during Hollywood Week, when I clearly remember some not-so-great singing on her part. I don’t know if I can deal with her theatrics for however long the producers let her stay!

  • Locklky

Some clinkers in there that’s for sure — but a few that might work out.

  • Mike

Yes to Tatiana, “Norman,” and that ridiculous drama queen who looked like he was dressed like Olivia Newton-John in the “Physical” video? And no to talented Jemar Rogers, whose friendship with the widower would have made a compelling season-long storyline? Did the people from “Wife Swap” make the final decisions here?

  • Ellie

TATIANA? Are you kidding me, AI? Tatiana?!!? She barely could make it through the first audition rounds, so you are telling me she was impressive enough to make it to the top 36. I suppose she makes for ‘good’ television, but every time she starts bawling, I want to punch my TV. She is able to sing, but not very well at all. She will have no fan base at all, AT ALL. Tatiana is possibly the least likable Top contestant in a long time. Anyways, go Anoop!

  • sara

what a joke. Only THREE per week advance. Norman and Tatiana are guaranteed to advance thanks to Idol producers and their gift to votefortheworst.com. Seriously. So, which talented performers will they beat out?? Why are the Idol poducers sabotaging the show?? I really don’t get it. This franchise is now dead.

  • Erin

Yay, Nick/Norman made it in! He’s so funny, I love him.
Tatiana however needs to go home. America will not vote for her, she’s so annoying. So i’m confident she won’t last. I’m upset they didn’t let Jemar in too. He was an amazing singer.

for the most part i’m happy with the top 36. my favorites, anoop, kristen, and jackie made it through! i’m definitely going to be voting for anoop next week for as long as i can. i think i saw that jackie is in the same group as him for next week, so that might actually be hard for me to choose. i hope tatiana is gone next week, and if she is, i hope that the judges don’t pick her for a wildcard, but the judges will judge based on the contestants performances, so we’ll see. i’m surprised that nick mitchell got through. he’s funny, and seems like a nice guy, but he just isn’t good enough. some people that got cut sang better than him during hollywood. also, what was up with the judges criticizing kristen’s clothes? that was really unnecessary, and simon wanted jen to go through because she’s more attractive? i think that kristen dresses fine, and i love her voice. she kind of reminds me of diana degarmo.

  • nicole

All I can say is THANK GOD i have a MUTE button on my remote now that Tatiana was put through. Gack!

The thing is Tatiana can sing. She’s annoying as hell, but people are always going on about this being a singing competition not a popularity contest, so I think it is only right that she gets through, because she has strong vocals. She’s not going to make it very far because, actually, yes it is a popularity contest.

  • Peggy Sue

I actually think there is more talent in this top 36 group then we had last year. I LOVED last year, so that’s saying a lot. Looking at the first group of 12, though, it’s going to be tough to pick. I hate that we only get to see them once before voting them in or out (some we have barely seen in auditions and Hollywood week). At least last year we had more time and more performances to eliminate people.

  • Matt

No Jamar? That is the biggest crock even more than Tatiana. At least we can vote her wacky self off quickly. Jamar had an amazing voice. I’m simply shocked.
