So the TV gossip gods are all aflutter this morning over the news that Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan will be leaving her role as neighborhood floozy Edie Britt in April. (Why did I just single her out as the "neighborhood floozy"? They’re all floozies!) Naturally, the announcement is already raising some questions–head over to the latest installment of Ask Ausiello to read my esteemed colleague’s opinion–and I must admit that it’s made me a little sadder than I expected. I didn’t really think I was an Edie Britt fan, but taken as a whole, Housewives has been a lot sparkier, campier, and downright funnier because of Sheridan’s vampy performance. The one-time Knots Landing ingenue has always done a nice job of balancing Edie’s emotionally icy exterior with the softer, needy side that emerges from time to time. She hasn’t always been the most likable of Housewives, but Wisteria Lane is going to be a lot less fun without Edie gallivanting down the street in tube tops and Daisy Dukes.
What do you think? Are you happy about the news that Sheridan (or is it just Edie?) will be leaving the Housewives canvas? Will the show suffer without her? Talk to me!

She is hardly on the show, so I think it will really not make a bit of difference. It’s not like she is one of the lead ladies.
I am glad Edie is leaving. Now they HAVE to give Catherine some more screen time.
I’m going to miss Edie. There’s no other character like her on the show. And while I did consider the upside being more screen time for Catherine, the fact is, they have so watered down Catherine that she is boring. She was the perfect foil for Bree last year and could easily match her (could easily have been a Bree replacement) but this year – nice, sweet, supporting character. She’s lost her fire, her sharpness, anything that made her a distinct voice. It’s been disappointing, especially since I love Dana Delaney.
Why can’t they keep news like this under wraps so that when Edie does actually get killed off it’d come as a total shock? Instead there’ll be all kinds of speculation and obligatory leaks from the set and by the eimw the episode airs, it’ll be anti-climatic. And Edie, of all people, deserves a BIG CLIMAX…
that sucks. her character had character! she’s my second favourite after gaby. gah! she kept the other housewives on their toes! get rid of hatcher! gah!
I think that it doesn’t matter either way…. the show will still be good with out her. I will miss her picking on Susan every now and again, though.
Edie was always fun, but the writers never really knew what to do with her. Oh and I totally agree with TorontoTom. Can’t we just find out someone is leaving the show, after their character leaves the show. Sheesh. It’d be different if this was in a spoiler section on all websites, but this is headline news in the world of entertainment. Can’t we keep it underwraps for once…
If Nicollette Sheridan is leaving “Desperate Housewives”, who will take her place in the sixth season? I have a list of candidates to take Nicollette’s place, and they are as follows: Carmen Electra, Denise Richards, Terry Farrell and Lucy Liu.
I’ll miss a bit, but the most important thing in this case is why she’s leaving. If the writers are really out of plotlines for her, then fine but if it’s simply because of contract negotiations going badly then I will be unhappy. This season has been great thus far. I agree that Catherine needs to put Susan back in her place (don’t even get me started on Bree. why do we not see those two together anymore?)
she’s the coolest character and the prettiest one. i remember about marc cherry hitting her and also giving the all the girls except her a new car. she’s getting screwed
First season, I wasn’t sure about the Edie character either, but once the relationships were established between her and Susan (the weakest character) especially, I truly liked her. Nicollette will be greatly missed on “Desparate Housewives.”
I fondly remember Nicollette on a previous ABC show from my childhood titled “Paper Dolls.” Any word on a highly unlikely DVD release for the undervalued, quickly canceled series?
One villain from the program ended up in the ground breaking “Twin Peaks” and one would not forget the casting of the eternally sexy Lauren Hutton either.
Wow, those were definitely the days!
I’ll miss her fighting with Susan–they were funny together.
Too bad her charecter is great espeically when playing off of Susan, Gabby, or Mrs McClusky.
She was the comic relief but to be honest, Edie really never had much of a story. It’s the right time for her to leave.
WHY OH WHY can’t it be Susan and Lynette leaving instead. I loathe those two characters to the point that I’m about to stop watching.
To Anthony C. — I loved Paper Dolls as a kid, too. Remember when John Waite was on the show? Good times…
I remember this was rumored for the end of last season when she was “forced out of the neighborhood”. Her return with the creepo husband told me it was only a question of time before that plotline ran its course.
I think it’d be more fun for us to guess on how she leaves the show now. Does the psycho husband kill her character? Does she kill the psycho husband and end up in jail? Do they move out of town quietly? I doubt they’d let such a great character go without some kind of a bang.
edie’s finally got a great story this season. i kind of don’t want to see her go. i have to admit… i’m tres bummed.
I agree with Cardsgal – why can’t it be Lynette & Susan leaving?? Edie and Gaby are the best two on the show!
Bummer! Loved her on Sunday with the boot camp thing and getting Gaby in gear. I will miss her. I think Marc Cherry should just wrap up the series in 2011 (or original end date). I don’t want to see my fave show go downhill. Once one cast member leaves, it’s only a matter of time before they all do and then you have crap.
Sooooo happy to see Edie go. Never liked her character. Was very sad when they brought her back this season. Now that Edie is gone, maybe they’ll give Katherine a good storyline again. And PLEASE have someone save Lynette from herself. I love the chemistry between her and Tom, but the writers haven’t done anything with them this year except make her as psycho as Dave Williams and Tom a pathetic loser. I do agree about getting rid of Susan though. The only episode I enjoyed watching scenes with her in was the episode where she went clubbing with Lee. BTW – if Edie doesn’t kill Dave, I hope Lynette does. Tom was just mad vs Crazy Dave so Dave won and subdued him, but a crazy and mad Mama Scavo will eat him for lunch.
I do hope though that other posters are right and they give her an amazing storyline ending, that’s what Nicholette (and viewers) deserve.
housewives without
sheridan is like the original 90210 without
Shannon Doherty. But instead of not watching anymore which I did without Brenda, I’ll still show up on Sundays at 9/8 central
Totally glad that she’s leaving — never found her character believable (I know the others are not exactly down to earth, but I could believe what the characters were doing/saying). Just like when she intentionally burned down Susan’s house, when Susan burned Edie’s house – it was an accident!
I vote that she saves Mike and Susan from Dave but gets killed in the process.
There was a cliff hanger once (last season? or the other?) when Edie said her goodbyes only to come back married…thus becoming one of the desperate housewives…then now she gets to leave…maybe to be killed by her “weird” husband.
Obviously you don’t watch the show very much, because there is no way they are “all floozies”. What a sexist remark.
If she is living probably somebody else will come up. In the remaining configuration is boring, and not convincing. 2 couple guys are trying to spice the air
around the desperate wives. I can imagine this to get more attention but I believe people will wonder, if the show is an advertise to this behavior, and will stop watching the freaking show.
the show will suffer without her wit and looks.
I am so disappointed that
they actually killed Edie off. She was the most exciting one on the show.I was hoping they would kill Catherine off if they had to get rid of someone. She is boring. I have never missed an episode but the show is not the same without Edie.I wonder what really happened behind the scenes between Marc Cherry and Nicolette to cause him to give her the boot. He must be an ogre.
