'The Dark Knight': Too dark for the Kids' Choice Awards?

Darkknight_lNickelodeon just announced the Favorite Movie contenders for its annual Kids’ Choice Awards (airing on March 28). And the nominees are….

High School Musical 3
Iron Man
Bedtime Stories
The Dark Knight

If you’re like me, you did a double take at the last title on this list. Is Dark Knight really a kid pic? I’ve got no beef with parents who let their children see it; the movie’s rated PG-13, after all. But this is the same show that nominated George Lopez as Favorite Male Movie Star for his "role" in Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Do nihilistic terrorists (i.e. the Joker) and talking dogs really have the same entertainment value for kids today?

What do you think, PopWatchers? Is it just me, or is Dark Knight a little too dark for the Kids Choice Awards?

The Dark Knight is too dark for this award show. Give Iron Man the Best Movie Award.

The Dark Knight being nominated for anything is awesome, especially after the ridiculous snub at this year’s sham of an Academy Awards.

Did kids like The Dark Knight? If so, then they should be allowed to choose The Dark Knight as their favorite.

    too dark

I’m not shocked at all. It was the highest grossing movie of the decade and a comic book movie. It’s a very dark comic book movie but a comic book movie nonetheless.

I remember when I was younger how “Friends” was always nominated at the Kids’ Choice Awards. That’s not a show that’s meant for kids, but kids in my class in grade school still watched it. I don’t think “The Dark Knight” is kid-friendly (I’m 24 and it scared me!), either, but I’m sure kids have seen it, and they probably had a hand in choosing the nominees. So I’m kind of torn on it.

I’m surprised EW is not talking about “I Kissed a Girl” being nominated for best song.

No, The Dark Knight is NOT at all a kids film! Excessive violence, language, and concepts of evil acts – I would not allow my kids to see it.

Possibly the most violent PG-13 ever released . . .

I found this film, a real masterpiece, but it’s really bery dark, pesimistic and sad….
i think If I have an 8 years old son I wouldnt have allowe him to watch it, it’s too raw….
but since children from this generation have seen so many things and nothing surprise them, maybe The dark knight is o.k to them…so, let’s hope the dark knight win the award, of course it’s not the oscar, but it’s o.k….children are the men and women of tomorrow..so….

They’ve had a couple of questionable nominations before that made me wonder whether it belonged on a kid’s awards show. But then I remember seeing movies I was too young to see when I was a kid and I’m sure that happened a lot with the Dark Knight since parents were thinking ‘Batman = kid’s movie’. Since they’ve all seen it anyway there’s no reason for them not to give it props

I’m 12, and when I saw this movie, I was amazed at how good it was… But I when I saw this list, I was surprised. It’s such a violent and mature movie, not to mention disturbing. I saw it and I wasn’t scared or disturbed, but for a Kid’s award is wrong.

Honestly, I don’t think our society had a problem with exposing kids to violence. If there was a lot of sex in the movie or children being disrespectful to their elders, parents wouldn’t want their kids to see it. But at 21 my friends and I were the oldest people in the theater when we saw it, so I think as long as Batman wins the big fight against the bad guys parents don’t mind. The subtexts in the film don’t resonante with kids, and the violence seems so fantastical they just get sucked into another world and they assume this would never happen in real life.

Wasn’t Iron Man technically a war movie? These are dark times, friends

Do you think think they’ll show the clip where the little boy has a gun held to his head? Way to go Nick. Now any kid who’s parents were holding off on letting their kids see this great movie will have every excuse to nag his parents to death.
