This report is all kinds of wrong. I enjoy TV shows far, FAR more when I can fast forward through the commercials. Having to sit through commercial breaks when you want to know what happens next is disruptive and seriously annoying. That’s why movies don’t have commercial breaks, and are usually a more focused storytelling experience. That’s why when movies are aired on TV with commercial breaks, they totally lose their momentum. This study was totally paid for by advertisers.

I do not enjoy commercial breaks during TV and I either surf to another channel or hit the ‘mute’ button when commercials come on …I mean do I really need to order any “Male Enhancement” pills for just the cost of a postage stamp?

TIVO has forever changed the way I watch TV. Nothing “live” is my first rule (except for football). Once those commercials start, I hit MUTE fast! TIVO is the KING!

Hey turn off your phone in the movies. You inconsiderate boob!!

Couldn’t this just be because the people that sit through the commercials are way more into the show they are watching than those that skip around? So, inherently, they are enjoying themselves more?

i agree, some commercials are really entertaining. and the thing about building suspense and getting giddy about what’s next is true. but, since getting a dvr, i have discovered the time-saver of fastforwarding through commercials. BUT, if i see a commercial that catches my attention or i’ve seen before and liked, i’ll stop and watch it. i wish Gap would start making commercials again…

I kindof agree that for some shows you need the breather to process things (i.e. Lost). But I have never watched commercials, really. Pre-DVR I would mute them and do my bills or something. So, I get what the study is saying but I’m still not going to sit and watch commercials.

I’ve hated commercials ever since I started watching television. Period. Never liked ‘em. Okay, maybe the occasional spectacular Nike commercials that air during the Olympics or Super Bowl or something. But those are rare. Thank whoever got the idea to invent DVR. Fast-forwarding through commercials is a chore. DVR allows me not to watch them. Also, explain to me why networks cut films shown on television the way they do. They always go to commercial at the worst times during the film!

It’s why I kinda like Fringe. They try to cram as much information into the show as they can so there are commercial breaks, but they last only 60 or 90 seconds, which are two to three commercials per break (until around the 45-minute mark, when they do a full two minute commercial break). It’s great. Don’t have to sit through many commercials and hacking off my ears at the same time. It’s why I often watch TCM (which air commercial-free films) and PBS (which doesn’t have commercials as well, except for the long infomercial-length pleading for pledges). I don’t really mind those as long as the programs run commercial-free.

    Hogwash. DVR is a godsend.

I wish, we had commercials of 2-3 minutes. In the last years the lengths of a commercial break in Germany increased to 5-7 minutes. Two breaks per show.
    That’s annoying and frustrating.
Building up the suspense? I’m going to have an heart attack from this suspense… hahaha…

Commercials are ok to show during a programme, but there are too many breaks on tv nowadays, and half of them are silly adverts, with the breaks being too long, and often being shown at the wrong time in the programme. I can’t believe that they are actually thinking about showing even more breaks now, with the length of them being even longer!
