This could be my favorite coverage of the Michael Phelps pot incident so far. This morning on CBS’ The Early Show, Harry Smith hosted a discussion on why America appears to be shrugging off Phelps’ photographed bong hit (and whether we should be). The guests were Ross Rebagliati, the 1998 Olympic snowboarder who was stripped of his gold medal after testing positive for marijuana, then had it returned when it was discovered that pot wasn’t actually on the banned substances list, and Joseph A. Califano Jr., chairman of the National Center on Addiction & Substance Abuse. The clip gets highly entertaining at around 3:05, when Rebagliati starts talking about how society is realizing that marijuana isn’t a dangerous substance when you compare it to alcohol and tobacco, and how pot is actually the lesser of two evils for athletes who count calories and can’t afford hangovers. (What if those athletes get the munchies though? Oh, how I wish that had been Califano’s response….)
